Well Original -- lets not say POURS. It's been clear skies for me since the last couple. I pray that I get in SOMEWHERE.

Hey I have a superficial, nonimportant question for you guys (both MSTP applicants and MSTP students and grads)

Do they confer the PhD on you at the same time as the MD degree? Or do you go ahead and go to the regular graduation ceremony with the graduate school at that time?

Also, I'm just curious if any med schools give special recognition to MD/PhD graduates or are they treated the same way as normal MD grads?

Recently I had an interview at an MSTP program on the west coast.

I ran into a fellow applicant who applied to Yale MSTP. He stated that he was accepted already. Is this guy lying? I thought Yale doesnt give out acceptances until the end of March?

Or does Yale (like Duke) give out a very few special early accepts to the MSTP program?

Anybody know anyone else who claims they already got accepted to Yale MSTP?

Most schools confer both degrees simultaneously at the end. This is probably done for several reasons: the MD/PhD is a combined program, to acknowledge you as part of an MD/PhD graduating class, and to dissuade those who might consider dropping out after completing the PhD. Some schools may confer the degrees separately though--you would have to find out specifics about the programs from their web site or other source. At UCSF, I believe the degrees are conferred at the end.

About special recognition at the graduation ceremony, I think this depends on the school. At UCSF, the MSTP retreat is near the end of the school year, so they have a special ceremony for those who are graduating. I'm not sure about the regular medical school ceremony though.

Do regular MD graduates get hooded AND wear the cap? So they give you 2 hoods at the ceremony, the MD hood and the PhD hood?

Hey Everyone!

Just came back from my trip to Boston and I'm very impressed with the Harvard program. After speaking with the director and many students, I got the impression that the curriculum has been drastically improved to better integrate the MD & PhD portions. Contrary to what's been rumored and what I expected, I found that most of the students were very happy and satisfied with the program...especially the students that chose New Pathways (vs. HST). Needless to say, with all the Bosotn area hospitals and MIT, the clinical and research opportunities make Harvard are one of the best (if not the best). I really hope I hear some good news. If anyone has any questions, feel free to message me.

I haven't posted anything for a while so I wanted to give props to everyone that got into programs or got invites.

Adam - don't worry about UCSF. No news is good news! I'm taking that attitude with Stanford...

DarkChild:

The last MSTP interviews will be held on Feb 5, and Feb 12, 2002. I have no idea about the MD interviews. Sit Tight and pray for the Feb 12 date. I am almost giving up my chances for MSTP here. Oh well.

MapK:
Congrats and good luck! I am sure that if you got MSTP at LEAST you will get an MD acceptance.

Does Northwestern MSTP give out interviews by phone, email or regular mail?

Not offered one yet, but my status is now updated on the website so I was just curious.

Also, do they pay for your trip/travel expenses?

Baylor,

I received my interview invite via email in mid-December for the Jan 16-18 interview. I rescheduled for Feb 13-16th. If you have questions PM me.

They give interviews via email. It was a little annoying, since they sent me the email on the 21st and wanted a response by the 25th (I was out of town that week) for an interview on the 6-8th of febuary. How in the world can you get airline tickets in that short a time? And, no, they don't pay for tickets, but they do pay for everything else, hotels, food, etc. They also say that they pay all expenses for a second look if you get accepted. Anyhow, I couldn't make that interview date and I called them and they said they were going to schedule at least one more date, but they don't know when. When I asked that they give me at least two weeks notice so that I could find tickets/let my boss know, they said that they'd try to do that.

Baylor: anyhow, I wouldn't stress it...you'll probably get an invite...and even if you don't you've already gotten into better places.

I've mentioned this before, but I really don't understand the randomness of this process. For instance, I still haven't heard anything from UC Irvine...a school I once thought of as a safety. I hope that some day I'll be privy to the admissions game and finally understand what it's all about.

Good luck all,

Adam

Rumit, there's a discussion about this in the "safe schools where are you" thread. perhaps you could grace it with your comments?

Hello! I have been following this thread for a while, so I thought I would finally join my fellow MD-PhD applicants! So far, I have interviewed at Michigan, Yale, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, and Rochester, and I have several interviews lined up for February, but I'm still waiting for my first acceptance. Good luck to everyone!

I'm blaming it on the mail. 😀 It takes about three weeks (!!) for mail from Canada to reach the US, despite the fact that I live about an hour from the border. So, most of my applications have only been complete since the beginning of January. Next time, I'm Fed-Ex'ing them, even if it costs $20 a letter in Canada.

Anyway, ya. I would've thought I would've heard something by now from the schools that have been complete since Nov/Dec... I've got pretty good stats (well, very good MCATs, decent GPA), and I'm active in student government (I was a finalist for a Rhodes Schoarship in my province). Oh well.

As to the MTSP... I am still seriously thinking about MD/PhD. I probably won't do it under the MSTP, though, just because so few schools offer funding to internationals (especially the schools that I'm interested in, like Duke (although Original suggests otherwise). I can get funding from the Canadian government for the PhD portion ($20,000 a year, actually), so it's not too bad.

Anyway, thanks for the support, guys!

Hey DarkChild!

I submitted my application online on Oct 6th. I received a snail mail letter from the MD/PhD committee confirming the application completion in early December. Don't worry b/c althouh the website posts Jan 28th as the last date but they plan to host two more sessions. They won't notify people about their admissions status until mid-March, so it sounds like they will interview until the end of Feb. Good luck on getting an invite!

Hey, I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for the Feb. 12th interview at Harvard! I just got a letter in the mail yesterday, dated Jan. 28th, saying my application was complete and would be reviewed. Hope I'll see some of you there!

Greetings my fellow MSTPers

Sorry for the long delay... I just came back from a lengthy vacation at home, interviews at Duke and Columbia, and then a rejection from Harvard's MD/PhD... urgh! They said because I was not a U.S. citizen that they could not consider my application any further... oh well, they don't know what they're missing. 😡

I thought Duke was a nice place, but I didn't like the research there that much (just a personal bias), and Columbia was great although the students there were really unhappy... But I got into Columbia and to Chicago, although I won't be going to either place.

Oh, before I forget... I got into Johns Hopkins with full funding! Instead of just giving me an acceptance without funding... their director phoned me and awarded me a private scholarship funded by Merck. Basically he said that I get the same benefits as everyone else, but the source of funding is Merck instead of NIH... anyway, it's really hard to say no to Hopkins!

So right now for me, it's come down to either Cornell or Johns Hopkins. ... I think I'll have to go on second visits before I can decide. For my summer, I'm thinking of putting up a website about MD/PhD admission for international students in the U.S. and get Vader to link me on his suuper MSTP site.

I'm really proud of all the other SDNer's... you guys all rock, and I'm really thankful for the nice support network here.. Go MSTP!

Hey Sonic,
Sorry to hear about the big H--just goes to show how random the process is (and the difficulty that international applicants face). On the bright side, you have some excellent acceptances already. Hopkins with full funding--awesome. PM me the link when you get your site going and I'll be sure to add it to my page. 😀

Sonic,

When did you interview at Hopkins, when did you get your acceptance, and when did you get the phone call about full funding?

thanks

McGyver,

I interviewed at Johns Hopkins on December 14. Their director (Bob) told me that the committee seemed to really like me, and although Hopkins has traditionally never accepted a non-citizen student that they will be very interested in trying to get me. He wanted about a month to look for private funding.
On Jan 22nd he called me and told me that I'm officially accepted and that Merck has agreed to provide a fully-funded slot for their MSTP. Since that slot has no citizenship restrictions, he said that I could be provided funding. I am told that the others who interviewed with me have not been given their funding decisions yet because they have to figure that out, but since the case was different for me, they were able to give me funding early.
I really loved the Johns Hopkins program, mostly because while their research is outstanding and their clinical training is amazing, I also was very impressed at how down-to-earth and nice the students there were. Bob Siliciano is a really cool guy, and I should have no trouble getting along with the two coordinators - Thommie and Bernadine. So I think in pretty much many ways Hopkins is a great fit for me.

Brandonite -

I would not give up the possibility of applying to MD/PhD programs as an international student JUST BECAUSE you think funding is an issue.

Of the 10 places I applied to, only Harvard MSTP rejected me saying that they can only interview and consider apps from "US citizens". All other 9 places interviewed me, and 7 have already given me acceptance with funding.

In my experience, I found that most schools that will tell you they don't have funding in the beginning will somehow find the money if they really like you. That was the case for me with Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Chicago -- all of which categorically told me that they don't have money for noncitizens.

Original is right too... when I interviewed at Duke, their director - Sal Pizzo told me that they now have a $1 to $1 match from the Duke Endowment for NIH money... that way that can pretty much double the slots they have by using internal money. There is no restriction for that kind of funding. So if you like a school, just go ahead and apply. Tell them that you love their school, and if everything works, you'll get your acceptance.

WOW!!! Sonic that is great. Dude I'll go to Hopkins in a minute. Freaking full funding! You must have made quite an impression. I'm proud of you men. How was your vacation? I'm going home for spring break plus an extra week. Really looking forward to it. Harvard's loss for real.

•Original is right too... when I interviewed at Duke, their director - Sal Pizzo told me that they now have a $1 to $1 match from the Duke Endowment for NIH money•••••Yeah my experience at Duke was interesting. I got there a day before my interviews and went in to say hi to Pat (the MSTP coordinator). Half-way through our conversation, she finds out that I'm not a US citizen. She goes "whaaat? we didn't know that; we can't accept non-citizens" So I told her it wasn't a problem and that I'm glad AMCAS screwed up since I got a free all expense paid trip to Durham. I told her I'll go to WashU and that I'll just use my already scheduled Duke interviews as practice.

She tracked me down 15 mins later and told me that Sal (the director) wants to speak with me. She said it might not be over just yet. I walked into Sal's office 5 mins late in jeans and a leather jacket. He told me that they have non-NIH money and that I'm not out of the running. He said if I get accepted that there'll be no dinstinction between me and US citizens. This conversation ended up as one of my "interviews" over there.

A week later I was in San Diego at the big neuroscience meeting and someone called my name while I was trying to register. I looked back and saw it was one of the cell/receptor bio big dawgs that interviewed me at Duke. I was surprised that he remembered my name. He tapped me on the shoulder and told me that I'll get in no problem.

Throughout all this, it didn't cross my mind for one second that I might actually get accepted there. But then I got the good letter a couple of days after I got back home (about 10 days after my interview).

Most schools say they don't consider internationals but the truth is that if they want you, they'll make an exception and pull the money out of their a$$ if necessary. I pulled my apps (regular MD) from the med school of the state school were I did undergrad. They were adamant about their No-internationals policy and were not going to make an exception for me despite the fact that I teach for their summer internship program. I got lucky with some interviews and acceptances at other places; so I went ahead and pulled my interview-less app from their school. After withdrawing my application they called me and said they will fully fund me for my 1st year but that I'll be on my own afterwards. They weren't even talking about getting back my apps and interviewing me first. I politely declined; though I felt the only reason they were trying to get me was cause I got into Duke, WashU, and interviewed at similar calibre places.

My point is that don't believe what schools publish as being "policy". I wouldn't be too surprised if Harvard MSTP accepts Brandonite with full funding. It's still early in the process but it's getting late. I hope you hear some good news soon. Hang in there.

Hey fellas. First off CONGRATS to sonic. Thats awesome man...Hopkins and Rock are excellent places for research.

I just got into Sinai MSTP. It feels great to know I'll have an excellent bunch of colleagues in the future.

Just outta curiosity -- if you were to pick between Mayo and Sinai for MD/PhD any of you have any thoughts??? I really liked both programs. And feel that its gonna be a tough choice.

Oh yea -- sar-- congrats on Chicago -- i hope you don't think I'm being biased when I say "fellas."
😀 We're all in this together.

Hey JJ4!

Congrats on Sinai! Deciding between Mayo and Sinai is tough...good luck!

MapK

JJ4: congrats on sinai! How did they contact you? email or phone? Did they mention about funding support? Finally, when did you interview? TIA

Wow JJ4 that's great. I'm happy for you men. Congratulations!!!

Hey...thanks guys!!

Chef-- actually I had called to check on the status of decisions and they told me. Are you awaiting something?? Maybe you can call and find out.

Johns Hopkins is an awesome school, but I'm somewhat confused as to why their MD/PhD program has such a hard time getting funding.

When i interviewed with Siliciano, he told me that its possible this year that they might have as few as 4 NIH MSTP funded slots this year, depending on how many MSTP grads there are.

For a place like Hopkins with a strong research focus, I am frankly astonished that the NIH funds them at such a miniscule level. Honestly there are many public state schools with MD/PhD programs who have more than 4 funded MSTP slots.

Does anybody know why Hopkins specifically has a problem with MSTP funding? I would have thought the NIH thinks very highly of Hopkins, so I dont understand why their MSTP grant is so small.

McGyver,

I don't know if that's true. Bob Siliciano told me that Hopkins wants to keep its program small and manageable so that they can focus on students individually, but he also told me that they have about 10 NIH funded MSTP slots that can be given out to students. In fact, (I don't know if you noticed, but THE MAJORITY of the MSTP committee members are MD/PhD graduates of the Hopkins program, so they have a personal interest in it). Basically the stats are - about 40% (30) of interviewed students (80), get acceptance offers with/without funding. The students find out their funding status later after the entire process is finished. I was told that a few students decide to come to Hopkins even without MSTP money, using their own resources... frankly I think that's outrageous, with other choices I would not have done that.
I know that they DO have more than 4 NIH slots because I spoke to more than four students of the first year MSTP class there who were ALL NIH/MSTP funded. I'm wondering if you misheard what he said.
For me the funding deal was different because I'm not a US citizen and hence, not eligible for NIH money... so they had to fetch an outside scholarship, and so didn't have trouble telling me that I have funding early-on.

Anyways, CONGRATS to JJ4 for Sinai! and MAPK for his "big-H" interview... I have the HST interview offer, but I'm not going there. *sigh*

I also withdrew my applications from Stanford and U.Penn... both schools are a little wavy about funding right now (for me) and given that I have confirmed offers from so many other places I can't afford the cost.

Oh, well...

Sonic,

Do you happen to know when Hopkins decides the MSTP funding for those accepted? I ran into one person on the interview circuit who said he already got funding. Do they determine it on a rolling basis like admissions or do they have one session where they sit down and determine who gets it?

Like you, I also think its somewhat outrageous for someone to choose Hopkins without funding if they have funded offers at other schools. Sure, Hopkins is a great school, but its not so much better than the other programs that I would turn down full funding from another school like WashU and find myself with another 300k in debt to pay off. In the end, I dont think ANY school is worth that tradeoff (no matter if its Harvard, Columbia, Duke, Hopkins, UCSF, WashU, Stanford, etc).

by the way, congrats, hopkins is a great program. With some luck with funding, maybe i'll see you there.

Baylor21,

I was told that Hopkins determines funding on an interview cycle basis. They have committee meetings every 1-2 months, and several interview sessions are evaluated to pick acceptees. In the next committee meeting, they decide who should get funding early-on. As far as I know, they've only given out a handful of funded positions yet. I'm sure you'll do fine... just sit tight and hang in there!

Has anyone here interviewed at Stanford MSTP yet? If so, could you please tell me what the interview is like? Do you do a normal MD interview along with the MSTP stuff? Is it high/low stress? Just wondering. Any info would be great. Apparently, nobody at interviewfeedback.com has been to a Stanford MSTP interview.

Thanks,

Adam

Rumit,

-- bumping this thread up...

I was at the Stanford interview... er.. well, half way before I pulled my apps out. I'm an undergrad here so they let me interview at their own pace...

The interviews are primarily MSTP. 1 MD interview -- which I was told doesn't count much. But a student interview, which matters just as much as the other interviews. So watch out for that.

Talk to marjorie and find out who your interviewers are. If you let me know, I can put in a good word.. I know a lot of them. 😀

Good luck!

Hey guys. I put up a post on the general forum but just for statistical reasons. But I would LOVE to hear any input you guys had. I am trying to decide between Mayo and Sinai for MD/PhD. Any thoughts on the pros and cons of either??

JJ4,
First of all, congrats on your acceptances! In terms of choosing between Mayo and Sinai, I personally think Sinai is the better overall choice. Mayo is a great school, and you would definitely have some unique research opportunties there. However, I think from a overall standpoint, Sinai has more to offer in terms of location, education, student body etc. Just my two cents.

To bring up a point that RNAGirl asked, has anybody heard about U of Chicago? I think I rememeber someone saying the last interview date was in January, in which case I guess I am out of luck as far as MSTP. Sucks because U of C is definitely one of my top choices. Any news would be greatly appreciated.

One of my questions though was where I should park. I'm driving up from Santa Cruz...I'll actually be staying with a friend in Palo Alto the night before because I'm going to the Sunday night dinner...but I have no idea what parking is like at Stanford. I've only been to the campus once.

Also, are the interviews pretty laid back or more confrontational? So far, most of my MD/PhD interviews have been very cool.

Thanks again for the info.

Adam

Wow. Congratulations to all. Some nice names I hear, Stanford, Hopkins, Sinai. Eh,
What do you people think of Einstein. Do they have a good program in your opinions?
I am going there this year MSTP.

I just want to see what others think of this school.

Has anyone else received an acceptance from Pittsburgh? I got my letter the other day and I'm wondering if anyone else is thinking about going there? I'm still waiting to hear from a few other places before I make a decision.

RNAgirl,

I thought Pitt didnt accept anybody till late Feb. Oh well, thats cool you got accepted. What date did you get the letter? Did you go to the MSTP 2nd look? I was invited to go but didnt make it. Supposedly only those who have a very good chance of acceptance are invited to the 2nd look, but how knows for sure.

Is that where you are going? What other schools are you looking at?

So what is the deal with the FAFSA and stuff? Do we need to fill this junk out or what? I don't remember any of the schools saying anything about it. What have you guys/girls heard?

BME02:
I would assume that you should fill it out like regular MDs. Even if for no other reason than formalty. Although with full MSTP funding it might be tough getting any kind of additional aid. But who cares anyway? As an illiterate international student I don't even know what the FAFSA means. I have enough trouble with my W2 forms, bills, un-paid tickets, court dates and stuff like that. I hate paper. Absolutely! I'd rather someone just tell me what's up.

I'm pretty sure we interviewed together at Pitt on Oct. 1-2! My letter from Pitt was dated Jan. 30, and I received it in the mail on Feb. 2. During the 2nd Look Weekend, Dr. Wiley said that all of the acceptances would be mailed out by the end of February.

As for the 2nd Look Weekend, the most useful part for me was that I arranged to meet with several faculty members one-on-one on Friday afternoon before the activities started. Anyway, I'm still convinced that Pitt has a very well-organized and respected program, and I think Dr. Wiley is a great director. I can give you more details if you're interested.

I'm happy about my acceptance, but there's no doubt that I would choose Yale or Michigan, and maybe Northwestern, over Pitt. So, I'm waiting to hear from those programs, and still hoping to get a couple of last minute interviews from places I haven't heard from yet.

Are you seriously considering Pitt? What other programs are you looking at?

On your schedule, they designate which interviewers are members of the MSTP operating committee (although it's my guess that the other interviewers evaluate you, too). These interviews were maybe a little more stressful, but really, all of the interviews were very relaxed and conversational.

They usually put you up in an on-campus hotel the first night to make things easy, and then you meet up with your host at the end of the first interview day. I think the point of this is so you can get to know some of the students better. It's also a good opportunity to see what some of the housing options are.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

RNAgirl,

Yes I also interviewed at Pitt on Oct 1-2 so I assume we met up there.

I got accepted to WashU so I would probably go there over Pitt. I got accepted to Hopkins also but without funding. So I'm still holding out hope that they might offer me funding, but thats probably a longshot at this point. Otherwise, Yale and Penn are the other schools I'm waiting to hear from. When did you interview at Yale?

I liked both alot. Two things bother me slightly about Yale. 1) Job opportunities for my wife in New Haven (she's an IT/computer person) and 2) the living stipend is smaller than at other places. On the Yale website it states that some students may have trouble living within the stipend for the first couple of years.

I'm assuming Yale MSTP mails out acceptances at the same time the regular MD candidates are notified. I saw on the website that all letters are supposed to be sent by the end of March. Do you know anything more specific about the date than that?

I havent been able to check my mailbox since Feb 1st so I dont know if I have gotten anything from Pitt yet. Good luck with Yale and keep us posted.

hey fellow mstp'ers,

is the interview season winding down? Almost all programs I've applied only have 1 or 2 more interview sessions and most will notify of their final decisions by March. It seems like if we have not heard by now, there'll be no interview offer. (Except for Stanford, the lady told me they are a bit backed up)

Is everybody starting to sense where they might matriculate, based on the interviews offered and your impressions, or still clueless?

Best of luck to everyone! 🙂
