MSTP Secondary App. Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone - I just got an email from UMich requesting my LORs. The address in the email is for the med school only. When looking at the MSTP website however, it says to mail the LORs to the MSTP office.....I'm thinking I'll take this email as a sign the send the LORs to the MSTP office? What is everyone else doing?

I got the same e-mail a few days ago. I just replied and told them that my letters had been posted to the MSTP via VirtualEvals, and they wrote back that it sometimes takes a while to process them and "not to worry". I take this to mean that you sending them just to the MSTP would be fine.

FYI, yesterday UCSD e-mailed to inform that their secondary was available, although they were having "technical difficulties" and it will be accessible today at noon (presumably Cali time). I guess they screen because the e-mail did say "you have been approved for a secondary application".

UCSD secondary is now available in PDF or Word form on their status site.

Ohio State MSTP- Two essays: one on altruism, the other on "desire to go into medicine." 600 words max each.

GO BUCKEYES!

Could someone please post the Penn questions when they're available?
Thanks

For MD/PhD there's a question about research interests (500 characters) and then a space to talk about Why MD/PhD - but this is optional since everyone has the MD/PhD one in AMCAS.....other than that just parental info and $80

Anybody hear anything yet about the UCLA secondary? On the MSTP website it says "[SIZE=-1]The supplemental MSTP application is an on-line application. To access the application, click on the link to get to the Application Status Database. Your AMCAS application must be verified before you will be able to access the link for the MSTP application." I found this database on the UCLA website, but I can't log in.

general question here. Are you guys doing all MD/PhD programs or some MD/PhD some MD?

For the Tri-I, what is the supplemental MD/PhD secondary...I never got notice of it, only about the MD one...

The document that they attached with the email said that they had no additional MD/PhD secondary...

Correct. There is only the one secondary but the MD/PhD adcoms use the 'normal' one.

I am applying straight MD/PhD....I'm reasonably sure I'll get in somewhere and I'd rather go to a lower-ranked school MD/PhD than a higher-ranked school MD-only. People choose to approach this differently however. I believe GreenMudPhud (did I get the name right?) is applying MD/PhD and MD-only.

gotya, thanks for the input.

Now, I know that with md/phd applicants, if ur rejected md/phd, ur still considered for MD but is your app put at the bottom of the MD applicant pile then? Or is it the case that both md and md/phd adcoms consider ur application simultaneously?

it varies depending on how much the MD and MSTP programs work in conjunction with one another. Some opperate congruently and thus the transition is considered either simultaneously or is rather easy to switch between the two. Some are not so easy.

arg, columbias is redundant with my amcas.

Email from UCSF today saying application is under review for a secondary. Ok, I know this isn't big news, but I really like their grad dept 🙂

yeah and the email is from [email protected] - you'd think with a name like that, good news would be mandatory - not just under review....

UCLA email...guess they aren't so slow after all

same. I do believe they screen right?

EDIT: I am still having trouble finding the stupid secondary.

Any help please?

I know! My heart kinda did a little dance when I saw the email...reading it was a bit of a let-down. UCSF's secondary is by no means guaranteed.

weird that's where I was and it didn't work, but now it does.

Thanks much J!

How are you guys dealing with UPitt's letter of recommendation requirement?
Am I supposed to send two letters to MSTP and another three (with duplicates from MSTP Rec.) to MD? I am so confused.

Does anyone know how the LORs work for the JHU MD/PhD program? Am I supposed to send the committe letter to MD admissions and the supplemental letters to MD/PhD? Tried to call today but they only take calls Mon-Wed.

I believe so. According to the website "MD-PhD applicants should send supplemental letters and material pertaining to their MD-PhD application to the MD-PhD Program, 1830 E. Monument Street, Suite 2-300, Baltimore, MD 21205."

I ended up sending my whole packet twice since I only saw this after mailing it to the MD admissions address.

Cheers!

I would advise people to log on to the UCLA status site. I didn't get an email, but when I log onto the site it says supplemental info requested.

I found the same thing as you did...I just hope that bypassing waiting for their e-mail didn't somehow result in my seeing that I was invited to submit a secondary when, in fact, it was not actually to be!

I don't know what yours says but mine says "date requested; 7/19/07". Since this is today prehaps I will get an email tomorrow. I really doubt this is a mistake.

Mine said the same thing...sure hope you're right! If so, then congrats to both of us (and everyone else who gets the 'requested')!!!

Update: This morning I got an email from UCLA saying I was invited to fill out a secondary so I'm sure you will get one soon as well.

Is this the e-mail you got? (I only ask because it doesn't sound so much an invitation as a notification.)

Dear pennquaker08:

We have been notified by the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) that you have designated the M.D.-Ph.D. at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as one of your school choices.

The MSTP screening committee will be conducting the preliminary review of all our applicants through the month of December. Any additional information such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, publications, etc. must be sent to the MSTP office now at the address below.

Please be assured that all precautions have been taken to give your credentials a fair and complete evaluation.

You may check the status of your application via the 2008 Application Status web site. This site is updated weekly. The link for the status web site is located at the following location: http://www.medstudent.ucla.edu/prospective. You will need your AMCAS identification number, birth date, and the last four digits of your Social Security number in order to access the status page.

The MSTP Supplemental Form is online now. To access the form, click on the link to get to the 2008 Application Status Database.

Your AMCAS application must be verified before you will be able to access the link for the MSTP Supplemental Form. Admission to the MSTP and medical school are considered concurrently.

If you have applied to the M.D.-Ph.D. program in error, please go to the Application Status Database and opt out of the joint program as soon as possible. We can not proceed with your medical school application until you change your status to the Regular M.D. program.

For further information, please visit our website at http://www.medsch.ucla.edu/mstp or send us an email at [email protected]. Thank you for your interest in the David Geffen School of Medicine.

I have a question about UCLA's secondary. There are several questions asking you to describe your one most important leadership, volunteer, extracurricular, etc activity. I talked about the volunteer and extracurricular activities that were important to me (one each) in my personal statement. Since I already talked about those activities in my PS should I talk about new ones on the secondary or will I just discredit the importance of those activities since it may look a little weird to write about them in the PS but then not when asked what was most important. Thoughts?

yeah it's a notification.... but i think we can call it an invitation since UCLA screens (right?)

on a side note I just walked home from the gym (about a half mile) in the worst rain ever.....I can't think of many things worse than wet squelchy socks....

That's the one.

Sorry that I was kind of slow on this, but I received the Wake secondary (email) at the beginning of the week. It's relatively easy just a few statements on ECs and only a $55 fee.

Has anyone completed the UCLA secondary? I'm working on it right now (I know I should be faster at these things but happy hour keeps getting in the way) and whenever I click on the instructions link nothing happens. Are the complete instructions merely what exists before you click proceed and enter the application? Maybe it's a Mac problem....

No Worries, I'm behind as well. (Have 5 on my desk)

I believe the UCLA instructions are just what's on that first page.

Haha we should form a support group...."I think I'm behind but really I'm just neurotic"

I have friends who still haven't submitted AMCAS or TMDSAS so it makes me feel better but still, they aren't MD/PhD and our deadlines are usually at least a month earlier. This gives me justification for being so neurotic/lame....

As for lab, bringing my laptop in everyday was the smartest (or stupidest) idea I ever had. 30 minute centrifugation? No problem, I'll just write one of Columbia's million essays. 1 hour incubation? No problem, I'll just peruse SDN.

UT Memphis secondary today. It's easy: no writing, took me about 5 minutes.

Has anyone gotten the follow up UNC 2ndary yet? I remember us all getting the hey congrats on getting through the screen email, but has anyone actually gotten the 2ndary yet? I thought they said mid July.

Got an e-mail to complete the Iowa secondary, though you can't log on to the online application until you receive your username and password via postal mail.
