MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations! What were your stats and when were you complete if you don't mind me asking?

Not in the loop as to if the class is filled or not, but people get acceptances all the way till the week of orientation. Students will withdraw their acceptance as they here back from other schools later in the cycle. So despite the class being "filled," there maybe some movement later in the cycle.

As for calling admissions, I thought the COM doesn't do status updates over the phone. That maybe the reason they sound irritated. Plus, there are a ton of other applicants that probably have the same idea about calling in too. Especially on or after a Wednesday. They have a ton of other responsibilities that they have to attend to besides taking phone calls from over stressed applicants. I know this happens at other med school admissions offices too. I wouldn't take it personally or let it reflect your perception of the whole medical school.

Does anyone know if this is actually true? Where did you hear this from? If it's true I guess we are all hoping for good news tomorrow or considering MSU out of the picture...?

I met with an admissions advisor earlier today and that's what she said to me when I asked about how full the class is so far

Got the email that I was offered a spot on the waitlist today around 11am. Let's hope there's a lot of movement. Does anyone know how well the waitlist rotates? I'm an OOS applicant.

High waitlist @ 145 today - possible c/o 2015, guaranteed spot for 2016. Already have spot for KCOM c/o 2015... thoughts?? advice?? I'm currently an MSU student and MSU has always been my top choice but I fell in love with KCOM at the interview.

How did you find out your waitlist ranking? Did you call admissions?

CONGRATS to you! Tough, personal choice ... just keep in mind ... good things come to those who wait ... 😉 GOOD LUCK!

Same here, but with an acceptance at KCUMB. Already took a year off... is it worth it to wait another year?

When were you both complete?

If you feel ready to go now, then don't wait another year.

Congrats on the high waitlist! I'm curious how your KCOM interview was! I have mine next week and am not too sure what to expect!

When were you both complete?

Complete in mid-September. Currently working a full-time job in clinical research which I really enjoy, just not sure if I want to keep doing it for another year. But I guess the nice thing about MSU starting in June is they have to let me know by then, which would give me about 2 months to decide if I wanted to go to KCUMB or not...

I was low waitlisted last year (poor MCAT that I brought up this summer) but since I go to MSU undergrad I figured I'd show my face to the admissions people at that orientation-y/tour thing in late March(?). So I went and a lot of the people I talked to at it had been on the waitlist a few said they heard back the just days before. They will keep dipping into the waitlist until late April/early May I believe.

There are 300ish students a year I guarantee the class roster they have now will see a good amount of change by April.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone.

I was complete on 7/8, and got an email today at 145. An advisor asked me for my fall 2010 MPH grades a few days ago, then said let me know if your contact info changes, and I think I had a feeling then that I would hear soon.

I'm currently an MSU student graduating with an MPH in may. Don't know how I feel about the situation now...I'm in a long distance relationship, and she has one more year of her masters, so waiting could be a good thing.

Aside from all of that, MSUCOM has been my dream ever since I stepped foot into MSU and I hope I can be classmates with all of you at some point.

I deferred a year for a few different reasons. Some days I really wish I was starting this June, but ultimately I am enjoying the year to finish my MPH, travel, and just take things a little slower than they have been. I'm super excited about starting med school, but I'm finding the extra time I've given myself to be pretty valuable as well. If you really want to start now--especially since said you fell in love with KCOM--go for it. But if MSUCOM is really your dream then be patient, wait, and enjoy the year as a blessing 🙂

FWIW past threads have been saying there's about a 70% chance of getting accepted from the high waitlist. This is pretty encouraging, but I was really hoping to go to the EL campus but by the time the waitlist moves the only spots left are in Macomb.

Even though there may be only spots left at Macomb a lot of moving occurs among the sites before school starts. If you put in a request as soon as you get accepted there is a chance you can get that requested spot.

I am IS, 3.9GPA, 3.88 sGPA, 26M, complete 11/30....still waiting :/. I'm content to take a year off if needed, just wondering if there are any others with similar stats who have heard news. I was hoping at least for a waitlist with acceptance for next year as I realize I was a VERY late submitter due to being in France all summer.

...guess next Wednesday will be my turn 😉.

Congrats, I think you would be a great student for MSUCOM. I believe I have met in you person?? KCOM is substantially more expensive than MSU with in-state rates. Even with the year off (hence a year of missed income) you would be better off financially... Plus you know you love the terrific Michigan weather

Also, from my understanding, if you are on the high waitlist, you wont know your actual number rank unless you are in the top 10. Such a number or ranking was not included in the emails I received, so I'm either not in the top 10 or you have to call and find it out that way.

Good luck to everyone!!!

This is my understanding too. I might call today... though I expect I'm probably not top 10 at the moment.

Really? In past thread people have posted that they've called and the admissions office would tell them if they were in that top 10 or not.

That person must have gotten someone in a giving mood. They were really nice, but when I called they were pretty clear that they don't disclose where you're at on the waiting list. Oh well, patience is a virtue, right?

Has MSU COM sent out any straight rejections yet? I have been complete since late August and have not heard a peep. I’m OOS with a 3.5 and 29 so not fantastic but also not horrible stats. I wish admissions was a little more open with where applicants stood in the process...

I have similar stats - in state with 3.4 and 28, grad GPA of 3.81. I met with an admissions advisor on Jan 20 and was told my application hadn't made it to committee yet, so I'm not very hopeful at this point, but best of luck to you!

had to withdraw my application to MSUCOM. I am getting married on June 25 with a honeymoon to follow. Academic schedule doesn't work with that. Good luck to all!

my freind, you will hear soon, with your stats MSUCOM will definetly get you in. the second your files make it to the comitte you will get an email. my freind was complete in january 5, he heard 14 days after that, he have same stat as yours and even a lower MCAT (26). how much voluntter hours you have? that helps too, if you have more than 800 hours communiy service even dating back to high school, then you are in for sure

Taking a tour in East Lansing on the 25th. Trying to set up tours at Macomb and DMC but having some trouble getting ahold of the people who set those up. Anyone think I should just pop in and ask to look around?

Info from our class meeting today -

4000 applications, 1000 of those are in-state
Avg mcat 27, avg gpa 3.66
There have been 300 offers given, 260ish have accepted those.

Offers sent out from here will be for the wait list

I am a student at DMC, if you did pop in and just ask around I am sure someone could set you up with a student to tour your. However, it is a much better idea to schedule a tour with Katie Molina. Is that who you have been trying to contact? She is usually very attentive and gets back quickly.

Also, heads up for those still waiting to hear back on Wednesdays, MSU officially canceled school for tomorrow... including MSUCOM. So I don't think anything is going to happen tomorrow.

I got ahold of her. Thanks!

Will be withdrawing my acceptance from here, hope another good person gets my spot.

I am also withdrawing my acceptance here! I really hope it goes to one of you! Good luck everyone! 🙂

How big is the MSUCOM class expected to be this year?

Is that the same as it has been or smaller? I had thought they were doing 250 EL, and 50 at each away campus.

Nope, it's 300 candidates total. 200 at EL and 50 at MUC and DMC.

Admissions is meeting tomorrow morning.

Will anyone be in Lansing the week of the 21st for that neuroscience grad thing? I'm going to be there from weds-sat as a candidate for the do/phd program. Excited to be up there again!

I was wondering if MSU-COM has sent out all the interview invites yet? I submitted my sec. late oct but nothing since then. I did the online check it says application is complete. Anyone else in same situation?

At this point you're probably just going to have to be patient and wait.
Good luck!

so is it true that all seats have been taken or is that just a filthy rumor?

this school sure does like to leave all its applicants in the complete and utter dark

Anyone know if they were meeting today? This forum has really died down since January..but I know there has to be a few of us left that are still hoping for some good news. 🙂
