MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got admission email today...yea...I got accepted. So exciting...I think my evaluator forms play a very important role in the admission decision because my stats is just border line and I'm OS.

By the way, do you think MSUCOM will give me some scholarship to lower the supper high OS tuition? I heard someone said even though the OS tuition is very high, the school will give out some scholarship to assist OS tuition.

Good luck to all of you are waiting for MSUCOM admission. I believe MSUCOM is one of the best medical school in the nation, not just for DO only.

CONGRATS ... you have definitely been accepted to one of the top medical schools! What campus are you thinking about? Enjoy the moment!!

So I got my MCAT scores yesterday....26M. Really kinda meh results in my opinion...but probably understandable since I studied abroad in France up until a week and a half before my test..therefore not much studying. I got a 10 in VR, 7 in Physical Sciences (yikes!) and a 9 in Bio. I have no idea why I did so bad on the writing...only explanation I have is that I was exhausted by the time I got to that part. I'm only going to apply to my number one school MSUCOM this year and see how that goes. I have a 3.87 overall and 3.84 Science and lots of EC's. I'm not gonna be devastated if I have to take a year off and retake the MCAT..there are worse things in life. Anybody think I have much of a chance at MSUCOM? I am instate FYI.

I'm no expert, but from I know you have a pretty solid shot at getting in. You MCAT is average, but your GPA is well above the average person that gets accepted to MSUCOM. If you have lots of EC's like you said, then I believe you have a good shot.

That being said, I haven't heard yet either and my stats are somewhat similar to yours. I got a 27Q on the MCAT (9 Phys Sci, 8 VR, 10 BS) and I have a 3.4 GPA, both cumulative and science. I have a ton of EC's and have done research for a year and received an award yet.

My MCAT scores didn't get to the school until monday though (it was a retake) so I'm hoping that's the reason I haven't heard anything yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck to you though, hope to run into you at school.

I'm thinking Lansing. I have pretty strong EC and Clinical experience. I play piano in church, mentor students, high school teacher aide, hands on patients in Medical center for one year hand half, shadow DO, got multiple scholarship and recognition in minority community services, and I'm from disadvantaged background.

Hope that helps

so if you aren't in the top 20 percent (i am well above the gpa/extracirricular hours) but 2 points below their average mcat...do they notify you with a rejection sooner in the cycle, or do they wait till june to hand out your rejection? also, does calling the admissions office get you any answers as to whether or not they have reviewed your file? i am afraid to ask lol

Hey everyone!

I applied to MSU-COM once AACOMAS opened up but I'm out of state and I was wondering if that is going to push a possible interview back. My stats are: cum-3.4 sci-3.2 MCAT-29N from Notre Dame. I have tons of service and I was just curious if anyone knows someone who got in from out of state and if their numbers were similar. Thanks!

Hey everyone!

I applied to MSUCOM and turned in my secondary late July...I did not receive my mcat scores to make my application complete until sept 6th though.

My mcat score was 26M (10 Bio 9 PS and 7 VR)- my first and only set of mcat scores. My cum GPA is 3.42 and science is 3.51. I'm an instate applicant too..

I've been a nurse assistant for four years at Beaumont hospital so I'm hoping that helps. I'm in a sorority at my university also with leadership experience and I've participated in many committees within my sorority... also I have a little volunteer work here and there.

What are my chances of at least an interview? I'm nervous because I have not heard anything yet :/..

Since the MSUCOM does not usually offer interview before acceptance, the only way they can evaluate your applications is via primary, secondary, and evaluation forms. I believe MSUCOM really concerns about who you are and how you can make yourself stand out from the pools. As long as your stats is falling in the average, the important factor for admission decision is yourself. Those activities, personal statements, evaluation has to be matching with each other and show the unique characteristic in you.

Those are some opinions I learned from my case.

Good luck to all of you. I still can't believe I got accepted into such a prestigious DO school. Thanks God.

I have a friend that got in with similar stats last year.... I think his volunteer hrs were about 1800 hrs.

I just got my secondary, and now I'm afraid it's too late...
I will get it done in early-mid Oct. (mainly bc of the eval forms) and then I'm assuming it will be prob a month before they even look at it.. no?
Will I have a chance if I am too be reviewed in November?

I have avg stats and volunteering hrs.. fyi

I talked with admission counselor & she said, the committee meets and decides on candidates till April... so yes it is late but there is hope.
When did AACOMAS release your app to MSU?

YAY!!!! I just found out yesterday that I got accepted!

I applied to 32 schools and was starting to feel quite discouraged when rejection after rejection started coming in the mail but I'm so STOKED about being accepted to MSU COM!

Good luck to everyone in the application process!

Maybe we should start a Facebook page for the MSUCOM CLASS OF 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to decide which campus would be the best fit for me?

Any advice? (EL, Detroit, or Macomb?)

I'm all the way in San Diego so I don't really have the luxury of driving to all three campuses.

I know that I would like to do surgery, emergency med, or something similar.

I need help!

All 3 have their own benefits. In terms of going into one of those 3 fields it is not going to make a difference which campus u attend because you rotate in the same base hospitals in your last 2 years as far as I know. If you want the campus life, I would suggest EL. I feel you don't get the true MSU experience unless your in EL because the Detroit and Macomb campuses are just satelitte campuses. However, they are brand new and everything inside is new and beautiful as opposed to older buildings in EL.

You may want to ask students from all 3 campuses as I am just an applicant from the area. Good luck and congrats again.

University immersion -- EL
Super urban with its ups & downs (crime rate/lots of bars & night places/not much university immersion) -- Detroit
Live nearby & don't want to travel that far -- Macomb
What residency you want -- dont matter.
This is just my impression obviously.

I am at the Macomb campus and am super happy about my choice. I love feeling like I'm in a class of basically only 50 students. The faculty and staff at our campus (and I"m sure all of them) are amazing, and everyone knows your name. I also love the area, lots to do. I also was not interested in the EL Big campus lifestyle. It basically depends on the lifestyle you are looking to live and if a big class or small class matters to you at all. PM if you have any questions regarding Macomb, I'd be happy to help.

Well I am a current student at DMC and I am very happy with my choice. I know other students say that it doesn't matter what campus you are at in regards to what you want to go into but I disagree to a certain extent. I plan on going into emergency medicine and I do clinical research at Detroit Receiving in their emergency department, which is a trauma 1 hospital that sees a great deal of patients in the ER every day. One of the reasons I chose the DMC campus was because of this. Granted I did not obtain the research through MSUCOM, it still is good experience and I have made connections within the ER for the future. It really is up to you to go out and find these type of opportunities. However, if you really aren't sure of what you want to do, then yes it doesn't matter what campus you are at.

I'm accepted for the Class of 2015 and will be going to the Macomb campus! Is anyone else planning on attending there? I would love to meet some of my future classmates. <3

If you're interested in doing bench-research, go to EL. Otherwise, there's more than enough clinical and clinical research opportunities at each of the sites.

The big difference in my mind is the living conditions at each site.... Big 10 "college town" or Urban/City or the quieter area of Macomb. It's all personal preference. You will get a high quality education regardless of the site.

If I want to do fellowship in Hematology/oncology after internal medicine, do I have to do a bench-research to be competitive? or clinical research is good enough? I'm thinking which site I will choose. BTW, how long does it take to receive the official letter and package?

Thanks

Does anyone know how they count your EC/Volunteer/Work experience? Like, are all those hours combined? Because I had to work my way through college I have well over 6000 hours of work, on the other hand, I only have like 630 volunteer. I also have a few hundred hours of ECs. Is this enough?? 😕

I have no idea specifically about heme-onc. I would imagine your residency (known for placing fellows versus not) would have a much greater effect than research type during med school. Though tbh, I don't have an answer on that... look at one of the sub-forums here on sdn or just email a faculty member at MSUCOM, they will gladly help you. All first years have required mentors = excellent guidance and people who can help.

As for the official packet, I was accepted on Wednesday and received the paperwork the following Tuesday. Basically a week. Again, congrats!

I wish I knew the answer to this question. Similarly I have a ton of work hours and somewhat fewer volunteer hours.

I had a meeting with Lorie, an admissions counselor, and I believe they use your science GPA and volunteer hours most heavily when generating your rank, from the algorithm. I'm assuming work hours would fall somewhere lower for that for the ranking. But you never know what the committee will look at to make the final decision. It seems like that even varies from week to week.

Is it just purely undergrad science GPA? I did an SMP and all my classes were science glasses, that should be factored in the decision process shouldn't it?

Thanks jzrull. No offence, but I hope you're wrong lol. In the additional info section I wrote that I HAD to work throughout college to support myself...hopefully they'll read this and show some sympathy. As far as the graduate sGPA, I have no idea. It seems like they would have to include it...I just don't know how they weight it. :xf:

They weigh your last 2 years of school for science GPA more than the previous. This includes any graduate work you did. In fact, if you had 2 years of grad school after undergrad and it was all science, those classes would matter more than your undergrad scores.

Hey, I have a little problem. I received an answer from MSUCOM last Wednesday saying that they reviewed my application and decided to put my app on hold so they can review my Fall10 grades. Do I take this as a positive thing? I am thinking that it is most likely my mcat score. I mean they could have just flat out rejected me but this can mean they are giving me another chance.

CGPA:3.93
SGPA:3.87
MCAT:23M

A lot of Volunteering. I work at a hospital. In the process of filling out Army hpsp application because I aspire to be an army doc.

What are my chances???? worried

Does anybody know when they start sending out site assignments? I have my deposit and all my paper work in, so I guess I'm just curious. Also, when do they assign deferred students to their sites? Do they have to wait until the spring to find out? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Really? Well, then that's a good thing for me since i've done the best in my science classes that i have had the past two years. hope to hear some good news soon.

I would say it is most likely a positive thing. It could be a result of you not having what they like to say is 5 upper level bio classes. Do you have those and if not are you taking upper level bios this semester. It just my opinion but I think if you get good grades this semester you should be alright. Hope that helps.

Hello,

Congrats to everyone accepted, there is a newly made facebook group for MSUCOM Class of 2015!!! Just search it on facebook!

I'm so excited to meet everyone next year!

Is there any one going to visit East Lansing campus on Oct. 8th? I plan to visit East Lansing on that day and will stay over night in Detroit. Hope to meet some of you.

Do you guys think it is too late for an OOS 3.3/31 to apply here? I didn't apply here originally because of tuition, but I would love to go to MSU and I have some family in the area. I just don't want to waste the money of the secondary and the additional primary fees if its going to be too late.

And do I understand the process correctly, that it doesn't necessarily matter what order we apply in, because they only evaluate the top 50 at a time anyways?

Good luck to all MSU-COM Class of 2015 candidates this morning!! :luck:

I'd go for it. Never hurts to try 🙂 It does still matter what order you apply in... the longer you wait... the more "top" applications will be in line for review.. so your application would be even further down in the review pile if you wait too long.

playultimate and thrush,

What were your stats and volunteer hours? I haven't heard from MSUCOM yet, and I believe it is because of my number of volunteer hours (approx. 500).

I was complete in mid august and my stats are 3.4 gpa 3..48 sgpa and 25mcat... with a little over 700 hours of community service and just as much extra curricular activities... I haven't heard anything yet and was just wondering what you guys think of whether I still have a good shot?

cgpa 3.35, sgpa, 3.15, mcat 28P, 500 volunteer hours, MI resident, but remember everyone is different. There is much more to me (and to every applicant for that matter) than my stats.

I visited the EL campus in the spring, and I will probably attend there. Although I plan on visiting the other campuses in the upcoming month to check them out.

I feel so blessed. It's still sinking in.

Congrats! I got the same feeling when I received the accepted email. I also plan to attend EL, but I would like to visit the campus first. Can you tell me something about EL campus? I'm OOS, and I hope they will give me the non-resident scholarship
PS: I absolutely agree with you that there is much more about the applicant than his stats.

Congratulation everyone who got accepted!! For those who are still waiting, I really hope that you all hear a good news soon.

I'm a first year student @ EL. If there is any question, feel free to PM me.

I'm really grateful that I'm here. I really love all the faculties I met. i'm really happy here. No matter what campus you go to, you will feel the same way. We are all part of MSUCOM anyway. Last weekend, a bunch of students from DMC and MUC came to EL and watched MSU kicking a**** of Norte Dame.

For those who are still watiing... I know the application process is tiring and draining your energy. Stay positive. You can get through this and YOU WILL 🙂
