MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow! Just received a letter in the mail stating that I was given a Non-Resident Scholarship... I am shocked and excited!!

Anyone who already met with the school for the tour, what was the usual dress code for males? A suit is really too much imo since this is not really an interview....

PS would you mind telling me your stats? I'd like to know if I even have a chance.

undergrad in Biochem and Psych: 3.93 cGPA, 3.87sGPA; 26P: 9B, 9P, 8V; lots of research, volunteering, and extra-cirriculars; not as much shadowing as I should have

However, I think I'm going to pass it up. My deadline is Dec. 1st and I have another acceptance at KCUMB and an interview at OU (I'm from Ohio, so this would be nice). Even with the scholarship, MSU is still more expensive than my alternatives. I like the school A LOT, but not enough I suppose... Good Luck to you!

Congrats on your acceptances! I'm from Ohio too so I'm hoping for an interview there but I haven't heard anything (I was complete pretty late). MSUCOM's tuition is a big pain so I definitely understand!

Congrats to everybody who has been accepted, MSUCOM is a great school! So far we only have 43 members on our facebook page...but I know more people have been accepted than that!! So if you have accepted your offer of admission, come join us and we can start discussing the upcoming year!...After all, its really not that far away!

Here is the link:http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=103891869673493

Congrats again and good luck to those of you still waiting!

Does anyone know if the ADCOM will be meeting this week, my app was just complete today (last LOR was just received a week after all the rest), also do they call or email the acceptance notification?

Email. Expect one around 11am, I got my 10:50am.

Although if you were just complete today don't hold your breath to hear back anything tomorrow (I had the same hope as you). Unless you are very competitive and they bump you to the top.

Good luck!

thitchcock, Im in the exact same boat as you! My whole app was complete over a week ago, except one letter, which finally arrived today!

Any idea how many more times the committee meets this year? I'd love to hear back by Christmas from somewhere!

In-staters who have gotten in (congrats!!) and what were your stats if you don't mind me asking.

What would be considered competitive stats for an instater?
Thanks 🙂

from last years thread it looks like they meet up till Dec 14th or 15th, then take a break till mid-Jan, just wondering if they are meeting tomorrow or not, not holding my breath for being reviewed tomorrow but I can definitely hope for next week..
Im OOS, non trad, with 5 yrs military experience, 3.7 GPA, 28O MCAT, volunteering and shadowing experience, and tons of work and "life" experience, I have 3 kids and my wife is from MI where we plan to stay for residency and afterwards, I think I am a strong applicant because of all my experiences and my good academic record..
as per their website: "Other factors: We are interested in military service, extracurricular activities, paid employment, sports, overseas study and travel, virtually any experience that has added to your skills in leadership, team building and cultural competency. We cannot stress strongly enough our belief that you must be committed to and skilled in providing service to people."
already been accepted to TCOM here in TX but would leave that in a sec for a chance to be up in MI, even leaving two more years of paid tuition under the Hazlewood Act, which I stressed in my app, so now I wait some more....

Sounds like an impressive app to me thitchcock. Best of luck to you! I really like that MSUCOM takes the entire application into account more so than hard numbers, though yours do seem quite competitive!! I'm not holding my breath for tomorrow either. 3.65 gpa from UofM, 27Q..had really bad mono when I took it 🙁 ..done memory/attention and aging related research, volunteered @ hospital, work with breast cancer patients, and shadowing of course! I spend a lot of time dancing as an EC and have a few major leadership roles with that. I'm in state so hopefully that helps too! MSUCOM is my top choice. I have an interview next wed @ Wayne State though, so we'll see what happens with that! I really just want MSUCOM.

Good luck everyone! Hopefully we hear some good news later today!

Just received my admissions email!!

I applied for DO/PhD and already had 2 interviews. I just had to get accepted into DO for acceptance into the dual degree program.

I will be going to the East Lansing campus. I have a ton of connections through research here.

For those that will inevitably ask:

My stats were 3.5 Overall GPA 3.4 Science GPA 27Q MCAT with 3000 hours of volunteer work and 500 hours of clinical work.

I received the email 10 minutes ago.

Good Luck to the rest of you!!

Were you already admitted into the graduate program? I'm applying to the DO/PhD program too and had my interviews with Dr. McCormick and was accepted into the DO program in October. How do you know you were admitted into DO/PhD? My understanding is that we wouldn't hear until March but I think I was confused...

Also, congrats!😀

Dr. McCormick had me talk to the director of the physiology graduate program, who I am already familiar with. He told me he had no issues with my admittance into the program and would refer me back to Dr. McCormick for admission into the dual program. Dr. McCormick then told me the main concern was whether or not I would be admitted into the DO program. Now that I have I just have to hear back from Dr. McCormick again.

I am lucky in that I have worked in the physiology department for a year and know a lot of people that Dr. McCormick is familiar with. I haven't been formally accepted yet, however.

I don't know how your interview went with Dr. McCormick, but I do know that the interview itself is definitely a good sign according to the PI that I work for.

Acceppppppppteeeeeeeeddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :d go green, go white, go medicine!

That's so awesome, congrats again! I've heard amazing things about this program from doctors who have graduated from it. I hope :xf: I'll be seeing you in it next year! I'm still waiting to hear back from the neuroscience program...so we'll see.

I will be declining my acceptance here. Hopefully this opens up a spot for one of you well-deserving SDNers. I have another DO acceptance at UMDNJ and I prefer the east coast since I am from around here. I also have 6 MD schools to hear back from post-interview.

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back and to those already accepted. Sounds like a great program, I just want a support system close by. 🙂

Complete mid-September and still no word. I have another acceptance that needs a $1000 deposit mid-January. Thinking it might be time to send in a LOI...

Would anyone who got in in the past few weeks mind sharing your stats?

does anyone know how many people have gotten accepted so far??

In state, 3.5 science, 3.67 non science, 26Q, research, shadow, hospital volunteer, blah blah blah.....ya the usual. PM me if you want more detailed answer.

Had a class meeting this past Friday, I think Kathy mentioned that there are 27 open spots left, and class is about 196. Don't take me word though, that number just comes to mind. But I do know that MSUCOM tends to fill up the class by December. Think CCOM does the same....

Any clue if she meant they had given out 196 acceptances or if 196 had accepted? I know at least 3 people who were accepted but are waiting to here from MD programs or have declined bc they got into MD programs.

196 is class size, not acceptances, but even that number is wrong. Sorry I forgot to factor in the expansion of our 2 new sites, so the class size is 300. From what I understand, most of the acceptances have been given out, and as I mentioned before, I believe (and don't take my word), around 27 positions are left to hand out.

I don't understand, if theres 300 spots and 196 acceptances, how is there only 27 spots left? Are the 27 just at a particular campus?...i checked on the website and class size is 320

I hope this doesn't sound rude but we all know that there are so many students who apply to COM schools as back-ups for MD schools and OOS who may choose another school over MSUCOM bc of the large OOS tuition but they still may have put in a deposit bc it was their only or top acceptance so far. So even though 196 may have sent in their deposit we know it will shift, not all of them will be going to MSUCOM in the fall.

I haven't heard either but I have 3 friends who put in their deposit there but are waiting to hear from MD (1 already did, YAH for her and us!) so that is how I'm rationalizing it to keep my head up.

Good luck tomorrow for everyone who is waiting to hear!!

I love and fear Wednesday mornings. 😕

Ok I may have confused you guys. Completely ignore the 196 number I threw out before. There are around 300 spots in the class of 2015. Only 27 offers are left, this means 300-27=273 OFFERS have been handed. Stress on OFFERS, yes not everyone has put in their deposit yet, so yes there are probably more open spots, plus waitlisters etc.

Hope that clarified more

Best of luck to you tomorrow!

I do feel that I need to make a comment. I don't understand the mentality of "waiting to hear from MD" schools ... either you embrace the DO philosophy or you don't. DO shouldn't be a back up plan. To me, this takes away from the brilliant and very competent DO prospects ... yes, most of them could have got into a MD school also.

Just let me say, I am not bashing you for your comments at all ... just have been wanting to express my feelings on the topic ...

Again, best of luck tomorrow!!!

It isn't just DO schools that people "wait to hear from." Many schools, including MD schools, end up sending out much more offers than the number of seats in their programs. This is because many competitive applicants apply to many schools and get a number of acceptances and are then must decide which school to attend.

I do agree that osteopathic school should not be a backup plan. Either you want to be a DO or you don't.

TOMORROW IS WEDNESDAY!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

I completely agree with you. I don't think it's right of them either. My intention when making that comment was to state that the # of spots filled in the class isn't accurate at this moment and we shouldn't be nervous because of it.

My comment was absolutely NOT directed at you ... it was just something that lurks behind many postings ... GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!

Yup just got accepted today...email came at 11:18....IS 3.5 270 Complete 7/16...not sure if I'm gona accept but I'm gona take the tour they offer and see what happens!

Actually MSUCOM doesn't over-extend offers. They intentionally do this so the class cannot overfill (very bad things happen with an overfill).

Basically they offer about 320 spots and then when people withdraw their acceptance, another is sent out. For what it's worth, I think about 450 total offers went out last year (ie: about 130 people withdrew their acceptances).

Anyway the main point for what this means for you: the offers slow down to near nothing in January-March and then pick-up again in late March-April.

I was complete a month ago. I guess if I haven't heard anything yet, I'm out of the game right? Especially with only 27 more spots to fill?

where do most of the MSUCOM students live? I'm trying to start looking at prices and such.

Hey, I am a current 1st year COM student. If you are in EL, try looking at the 3 eyde properties. They give free parking passes to residents, which is right across the street from Fee. Central Park, Club Meridian and Somerset Park are the names of those properties. Central Park & Club Meridian are in Okemos, which is about a 7-10 minute drive to campus, and Somerset is in Bath, which is about a 15 minute drive. A lot of students are at Berry Tree and River Glen apartments. Those two complexes are walking distance from Fee.

Personally, I wasn't a fan of DTN properties because you get a lot less for your rent. I was between Somerset and Central Park. All three are really nice though, and you get a lot for your money. I didn't mind having to commute since I got the parking pass for free. I have a 2 bed/ 2 bath for $638 per month (1200 sq ft). For some, I know they preferred being in walking distance from the school. Check out rent.com, apartments.com, eyde management's website and DTN management's website for photos, pricing and floor plans.

Also, be sure to check out the apt/roommate service on COM's website. It lists people with available rooms to rent. COM, CHM, CVM, Law and other grad students post on it as well.https://apartmentmatch.com.msu.edu/ .

I couldn't believe I wasted my time and money applying after looking at the OOS tuition for this school.

Stupid me! Had I known, I would not have applied.

you are right on a few of those statements, LOL
dont you look up the school before you apply to it?

Does anyone know if there will be another round of decisions sent out tomorrow?

The MSUCOM's admissions office has a nice list of reviews put together for basically every complex within 10 miles. I used that and it helped a lot.

I personally recommend avoiding all DTN properties. Though they own half of East Lansing and Okemos so you might have to go with them anyway.

Good luck to all MSUCOM Class of 2015 candidates today! I truly hope that you get an early Christmas gift today! :luck:
