MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
During the week I'd say 30% go to class, fridays almost no one because there are no labs. I usually go because I feel its a waste of time to stream it later. I'll usually review it myself the same day.

I wouldn't live in Windsor, crossing everyday would be a hassle for me.

what happens if your are th eonly one in the class? does the prof still give lecture?

I'm going to advise the opposite to Canadians 😛

I find commuting from Windsor a great idea. Hundreds of students commute to Wayne State every day as well and if you have a Nexus pass you get through quick. Not to mention we only have mandatory courses two days a week since all lectures can be streamed. I car pool with 2 other Canadians in our class so our cross border cost is not really a factor.

Renting is really cheap in Windsor, and the city is much much safer. You have no problem going out for a run or bike ride at night. All three of us agree that its great to be able to cross back home.

why are they torturrrrrinngggg usssssssssssssss...no one heard anything?

This happened last year as well. The first Wednesday of acceptance came out between 10-11 am and then the next Wednesday had emails going out after 1pm. Hopefully this is the case this year!

Good to know, gives me some hope. Were there any Wednesdays when students did not hear anything? (I don't want to look through all of last years thread for the answer....).

Not during September anyways...

Checking my email every 3 minutes during class....

hey guys,

i was recently accepted to MSUCOM (last week). i honestly could not be anymore excited! i absolutely love MSUCOM, and i have been dying to go here for quite some time.

anyways, i am now worried that my bias and love for MSUCOM may be clouding my judgment for the best medical school to attend. although i have several MD and DO interviews lined up, i am SO READY/EXCITED to push the button and commit to MSUCOM.

here are my thoughts (biased) about MSUCOM:

-opportunity: tons and tons and tons and tons of solid AOA residencies in Michigan make specializing relatively easy. as a student who is interested in surgery (i know, i know...it will most likely (hopefully) change throughout medical school), all the great g-surg, neuro, and ortho surgery residencies whose hospitals i will be rotating through as early as third year make MSUCOM very appealing.

-reputation: even the ignorant anti-DOers recognize MSUCOM as a powerhouse not to be reckon with. i personally know a student who went to MSUCOM who received 10+ interviews at ACGME surgery residencies because of what he thought was due to MSUCOM's rep.

-Michigan: very DO friendly. i plan to practice in Michigan when i am older, and i think my MSUCOM degree will provide me with a lot of networking opportunities throughout the state.

-DO "stigma": i honestly do not know why so many pre-meds view this as a negative thing. you are upset about having to work harder and be better students than your MD counterparts to have access to ACGME residencies? you're upset about having to have a complete mastery of the medical school curriculum? i have no desire to match into Harvard/MGH surgical residencies and would be completely happy graduating from either an AOA or ACGME residency as long as i am a board certified surgeon.

curriculum: love it. solid pre-clerk and awesome rotations.

campus: love it. can't wait to attend some football games.

what am i missing? anyone care to play devil's advocate? i am really trying to find a reason not to attend MSUCOM.

in the name of nice, respectful debate, what does everyone think?

thanks!

p.s. i purposely "hid" this post in this little thread in order to avoid a DO/MD debate. please--for the love of all things pure and holy--do not turn this into a flame war. mods, feel free to move this elsewhere if you feel it necessary.

AH the wait🙁 At least It's a really nice day outside🙂

There is no reason not to attend MSU other than tuition if you are OOS. Accept it!

I think you should attend elsewhere, but only because that leaves another spot possibly or me 😛. Congrats!

...you would have to pry my acceptance letter out of cold, lifeless hands before i would give you my spot.

Called and asked if admissions were/are being sent out today. Damn, she was rude. "Can't tell you evey week, ok. Just gunna have to wait. Bye".

I would like some answers to this as well! I am currently trying to find a reason not to pull the trigger on the $1050 deposit.

Are there any negatives about this school besides tuition?

I was accepted today at 11:02 am 🙂. Secondary was complete 8/5. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!!!

are you canadian? would you mind sharing your stats?

whats wrong with their tuition? i thought it was a state school?

I'm in state, gpa: 3.4, mcat: 34R.

From what I hear they pull the top people from different piles each week (e.g. One week the highest GPAs, one week highest MCAT, one week the most volunteer hours). Looks like they pulled from the MCAT pile today! Congrats on your acceptance! 👍

Thanks!! I only applied to MSU-COM so it's definitely a relief

OOS is pretty awful tuition, but IS is great.

I really have not heard a single bad thing about MSUCOM other than OOS tuition.

but couldn't you become an instate student after a year?

Nope. U lock into the rate. have to establish in state residency before you matriculate

I hope they have a week for well rounded averages too!

wow, that's crazy, its not like that for UMDNJ is it?

Hahaha I wish. I believe it's only MCAT, GPA, volunteer hours and the quality of your LORs. I'm under the impression you have to be pulled from one of those piles before they even look at the remainder of your application...

Well definitely congrats then!! Do you mind if I ask why u only applied to this school?
I really wanted to go the osteopathic route just because my beliefs are so much more in line with the holistic approach. Also, I'm really interested in specializing in OMM so that was a huge factor. I chose MSU-COM specifically mainly because of the interactions between class members that I've seen. I was on the e-board of Pre-SOMA so we worked really closely with SOMA members at MSU-COM. They all had great things to say about the school and seemed like a really close class. The fact that it's pass/fail is also intriguing to me. Overall, it's a wonderful school and the location is close to home. Also, MSUCOM has a base hospital in my home town.

Any other applicants who are knowledgeable about this or current MSUCOM med students, I would love your input. Like the above poster, I am trying not to be hasty about sending in that giant deposit although I am almost 100% sure I want to go here. I have a very specific concern, and I might be over-analyzing:

I am super interested in OB/GYN (did sexual/repro health for my MPH and I am currently a HIV Epidemiologist at a state health department), and if I went that route there are plenty of excellent OB/GYN DO residencies in MI (of 30 total, I think 12 are in MI, so that's great). HOWEVER, I want to make sure I get abortion training, and while Med Students for Choice posts which allopathic residencies provide training, they don't post which osteopathic ones do. I find this super frustrating, but I can't find anything on the web.

Plus, it seems like doing an allopathic residency is really difficult if you want to practice in MI (since they require you do a DO internship or get that waiver, Res. 42 I think it is?). This is a concern I have regardless of which specialty I choose, because I do hope to practice in MI. It's probably the one and only downfall I see of going DO in Michigan.

Thoughts?

They will always have lecture regardless of attendance since they stream it.

I am one of the majority that chooses not to attend lecture. For me, I find it difficult to stay focused while in lecture so I either go to the gym or study during that time--or at least try to be somewhat productive so I don't feel like I'm wasting time. After the lectures are available for streaming, I watch them in 1.5-2x speed. This saves time and maximizes my attention span. Everyone figures out what works best for them. 🙂

Don't call the office every week to see if they're sending out admissions....there are only a couple ladies that are processing ALL of the paperwork and they're ridiculously busy. They're more than happy to help, but as much as the waiting game sucks, everyone goes through it. At the very least there's usually at least one person each week on this forum that will post about their acceptance---check here if that's all you want to know.
