I'm sorry if this has been covered somewhere else, but I can't seem to find the answer clearly answered on the boards.

Not getting cocky enough to think I might get into multiple schools, but how does the process work if you do? In theory, you'll likely hear from "safety" schools earlier, then interview and get your acceptances before you hear from the "dream" schools.

It seems like schools have a "time to respond", and some don't take deposits to hold a spot while some do. So how does this work? Can you keep your spot at safeties while you wait to hear from others? Or do you gamble?

Thanks for the help!

long story short, once accepted, you can hold all of them until may 15th. Past this date, schools are allowed to revoke your acceptance if you have not made a decision on where to attend. by this date, you must have chosen only 1 school. They can also see what other schools you have acceptances at.

Yes, you can hold on to them all, and make ppl on the waitlists cry, which will most likely be ppl like me lol

Once you get an acceptance, you have a time period to either accept it or turn it down (usually about 2 weeks). Most schools, if you accept it, you have to include a $100 deposit, which will be applied to your tuition. You can hold as many acceptances as you want until May 15th, at which time you can only hold one. Your deposits will be refunded if you withdraw before May 15th. You can be on as many waitlists as you want after May 15th, but you can only hold one acceptance.

Good information to know. 👍

Know where you want to go ahead of time. I've got a priority list and in case of the above, I will not hold multiple acceptances till May 15th - I will just accept the higher choice and drop the other(s). If you're not getting sleep over "multiple acceptances" these next few months... that's a good problem to have!

Agreed. This saved me time and money. If you have a priority list, then you can withdraw from all the schools below School X on the priority list when you hear you got in from School X. The money you spent on the application is a sunk cost, but that's all you lose. You also won't get down with receiving rejection letters, cuz what what...you rejected them. 🙂

Good luck this cycle!

👍 There's so many better things you can do with that money. $500 will get you a few books or a trip somewhere fun, not to an interview. You can go on a very nice 7 night cruise for $500.

Okay so I have a question. What if i get into a school i REALLY like, but I'm waitlisted at my number one on May 15th (which will probably be the case if I'm not rejected). Do I have to just give up on my first choice and accept the one i really like?

You can hold waitlist positions after May 15th.

okay so I would keep my acceptance AND my waitlist position, and then if i was accepted from the waitlist I could release the other acceptance? Can the school I'm accepted to withdraw my acceptance while I'm waiting for news from the waitlist?

Yea, if they find out you have a significant criminal record, you lied on your app, or you don't pay the deposit.

Or if you don't meet the school's standards for satisfactory academics... like you completely bombed your last semester (if you're still in school).

1.So if I choose to accept every school I am accepted to, that entails paying several hundred $ in deposits yes? I'm not considered as having accepted their acceptance offer unless I pay right?

2.I can hold as many of these deposit slips essentially, until may 15th? By this date I must have withdrawn from all but my top choice (and how do I go about refunding my deposits at lower schools?) What if I'm holding several, do I lose them all or is a choice made for me-or do they just reject me if they haven't received a deposit? If I have?

3.When the time is past May 15th and I'm holding on to my 2nd choice acceptance and receive my top choice in the mail, do I simply pay that deposit and then withdraw from the lower choice?

***4. When is it appropriate to ask for a 1 yr deferral?
Before paying deposit, after? After paying deposit but before the 15th of may?
Can a school deny a deferral and insinuate that you're not that excited (which isn't true at all) and rescind your acceptance-even for a very selective program like MSTP?

I'd really appreciate LizzyM's advice or experienced advice, please no conjectures.

Dude, patient people have already answered this question like 4 times. Can't wait to see how you do in the MCAT verbal!!

One other consideration is that a lot of people hold onto multiple acceptances until they see the financial aid packages of the schools they have been accepted at. Financial aid statements from the schools don't get done until after the FAFSA in the spring. The financial aid can be a legitimate deciding factor for some people.

Certainly, if there are schools you have no interest in attending, withdrawing is the most courteous thing to do.

1. It varies from school to school. UVA doesn't require a deposit, only a signed paper mailed to them within two weeks.

2. Don't hold onto schools after May 15th. They can rescind your acceptance for doing so. Just don't do it.

3. You have two weeks from the time they send you the acceptance to accept or reject it. If you hold onto two acceptances for longer than this window after May 15th, they can rescind acceptances. Again, just don't do it.

4. Apply for a deferral ASAP. Be aware that it might be denied.
