Hi, new to the pre dent forum. Was wondering what you guys thought of my progress to get into dental school. I have a 3.3 gpa, will this be enough for california schools? What other activities should i do?

Well first you can change your status to pre-dental. And then be prepared to come up with a good reason for adcoms about why your switching into dental considering your gpa is far too low for med and only relatively low for dental. As for california schools, I think it is actually very competitive esp schools like UCLA. Other activities that you should get involved in should obviously include dental shadowing and possibly the dental societies at your school. Congratulations on your decision and good luck.

Ah, about hte premed thing, I was actually at crossroads when I first joined. I just made a decision, partly based on gpa factors, but for the most part I don't want to do the 10+ years of training some MD's have to do. I was looking for something health care related, gave me the opportunity for autonomy, and that wouldn't just have me sitting behind a counter or desk. I have heard of shadowing a dentist before, but what other things are out there to do? One of my friends in another state is volunteering. However, I don't know where to look for a spot around my university. Any suggestions?

"Well first you can change your status to pre-dental."

Sorry, but could you expand on "status" changing?
(I'm prolly the only one who doesn't get it)

When I originally created my account, I was premed, but at that time, as I said earlier, I was at crossroads between med or dent. I just changed it. 🙂

Well just get like 20 ad above on your DATs and have a crap load of dental shadowing hours and EC. I am sure you'll get one interview. I got 2, UOP and Western. I have the same stats as you.

Oh yes, something else was bothering me about admissions. I was browsing through the UCSF admissions site and it says that their avg. entering gpa was 3.36. Is this misleading?

Not at all. From what I've seen, UCSF looks closely into factors other than GPA/DAT score to select its class.

Where are you reading that average?

On predents, I see UCSF has these averages:
DAT 20.6 PAT 19.2 GPA overall 3.61 GPA Science 3.57

On predents, I see that UCLA has these averages:
GPA overall 3.65 GPA Science 3.6DAT 22 PAT 20

Are these wrong?

I'm looking at the main website for ucsf.

It was a shocker to me too. I guess I better start shadowing a lot and getting other EC's done?
