I need you to hook me up with a job there!

Back on topic: I think you have a reasonable chance at getting in. I definitely echo the earlier suggestion of practicing your interview skills. Having a friend/significant other mock interview you is very helpful. Also, if it makes you feel any better, everyone at UK was very friendly and they really try and make you feel as comfortable as possible.

So I just want to give a huge THANK YOU to armorking and R2PharmD2, you guys are great. 👍

No problem. I would respond to more of these posts, but 90% of the time I don't know anything about the schools each poster is applying to. I don't bother unless I think I have something semi-helpful to add.

Hi, my name is Lauren and I am a Pre-Pharmacy student at LaGrange College.
The schools that I am going to apply to thus far are: Auburn University, University of Georgia, and maybe some surrounding schools.

Right now, I have a 3.77 overall GPA and a science and math GPA of 3.5. I am a sophomore and I am going to take O-Chem, Spanish, Statistics, and Precalculus in the fall.

I have yet to take the PCAT yet, but will next summer.

I have volenterred a few times at a pharmacy and am studying to take the certification test to be a tech in January.

I am also staarting to volenteer at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in my town and am going to become a tutor at my school in the fall.

Does anybody know something that I should improve on?

I would say if you nail the interview, you're in. GPA is not bad and looks like you've been improving. Good experience and volunteering. PCAT is good. Practice for that interview and get that spot!

Your GPA. Kidding of course.

For real:

I graduated with a BA in Spanish and it has proven to be one of the most useful tools that I am able to use while working in a pharmacy or otherwise. My advice would be to stick with the Spanish and try to get a minor or major in it as it will not only be useful, but also make you a more desirable applicant for Rx school and any other job you may apply to in the future... especially if you're in the southern states, which it appears you may be.

a. Several, top choices are Denver, VCU, and Maryland, in that order.
b. UGrad: 3.1 (Chemistry B.S.), Grad: 3.7 (Chemistry M.S.), Post-degree UGrad: 4.0 (stray prereqs I didn't take in my major).
c. Haven't calculated yet, but lower than composite.
d. 4.0
e. Taking PCAT Sept. 19th. I anticipate scoring well on all sections besides quant.
f. ~1 year in a retail pharmacy as a CPhT. Worked weekends and some nights. Probably ~500 hours experience.
g. After PCAT

h. Three letters, first from my M.S. thesis advisor, second from lab TA coordinator, third from pharmacy manager that I worked for. I am confident that they will be excellent letters.
i. Finishing up my chemistry MS degree, have been working as an analytical chemist for over two years. Two jobs plus taking prerequisite courses at night and PCAT studying burnt me out and I quit the pharmacy job.
j. I tend to clam up. I'm not nervous, I just...don't make conversation easily. It's something I've been working on though and have improved upon dramatically.
k. I believe it tells a concise and hopefully interesting story about how I got to this point in my life and the motivation I have for becoming a pharmacist.

I enrolled in my undergrad institution in 2004 and graduated with a B.S. in chemistry in 2007 after taking full course loads each summer and testing out of some courses. I was not the most motivated student and basically never studied for anything, due to a general lack of interest and extreme immaturity. My junior/senior year I took a biochemistry course and became motivated to do undergraduate research by the professor teaching the class. I joined his lab and completed a biochem research project. Once I began taking an interest in science again, my grades skyrocketed from ~2.9 a semester to ~3.7, including grad classes in chemistry.

I decided to stay on and complete my MS degree with the same advisor. Initially I worked as a lab TA, teaching general and senior level chemistry labs, but due to financial constraints I had to find a "real" job. I took a position as an analytical chemist in a government research institution and have been there for two years doing chiral chromatography and mass spectrometry. During my employment I have received co-authorship on a few papers in high impact journals as well as performance awards. Unfortunately my MS progress slowed down dramatically as a result of taking this job, however I expect to defend my thesis soon and be done this semester.

Pharmacy as a career is something I've always considered but never quite had the cajones to pursue until the past year or so. I won't delve into my motivations but I am dead set on making this a reality. I realize that my undergraduate GPA is an obstacle, however my prereq GPA is probably closer to a 3.5.

Any advice or opinions, particularly from other people jumping ship from pharma or academic research, would be immensely appreciated. Thanks a lot!

I wouldn't worry about your grades. Your improvement towards the end of undergrad coupled with the excellent grad GPA should alleviate any concerns about your academics. As long as you pull off a reasonable PCAT score (and with your level of education that shouldn't be a problem), you should be fine.

Make sure you keep working on your interview skills. I found mock interviews to be extremely helpful.

I second this advice. I did a couple mock interviews. Really allows you to get the kinks of what you want to say out.

my current GPA is 3.35 and i don't know if it's terrible although i still have 2 semesers before applying. thanks

If gpa is all that you're worried about then don't stress about it too much. I've asked some advisors in Texas pharmacy schools and they said my gpa was fine (3.3 gpa) and that there are other things they look at like experience, PCAT, interviews, etc.
If your gpa is within the requirements for that school then don't worry about it too much. You still have 2 more semesters to pull it up. Many students told me to get at least a 3.5, you're only 0.15 points away.
Just make sure you are an overall great applicant.

b. Overall GPA – 2.89 (recovering from my younger dumber years)

c. Math/Science GPA – ~ 3.0(ish) Could be a bit higher

d. GPA in last one or two school years – 3.79 over the last 46 semester credits – Got my act together

e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite) – 65 Composite

f. Pharmacy experience obtained – 4 years of retail tech experience and over 2 years of inpatient technician experience (All 35+ hours/week)

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary) – Will be submitting apps by the end of august or beginning of september

h. Number of LORs and source of LORs – With my years of pharmacy experience I have several letter offers but will be submitting one from a pharmacy manager, one from a clinical pharmacist, and one from my Organic & Biochem teacher

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience – Volunteered at a hospital once to twice a week for the past year; a few charity walks; a member of a pre-pharmacy club for about 6 months

j. Self-perception of interview skills – To be honest I don’t know, but I did get my job over many other applicants so they must have been impressed with my interview

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality – Ive had it read by people who actually work for the UW Pharmacy school and they say its unique and attention grabbing

Obviously my GPA and PCAT isn’t exactly competitive so I’m not applying to top schools. Before I discovered Pharmacy I had no ambitions and didn’t try very hard. I’m aiming at mostly private schools with rolling admissions and applying early. I’m actually more worried about my class loads. Many quarters I couldn’t afford classes on top of my other life expenses (rent, food, etc.) and when I could afford classes it was usually one or two classes which looks bad on a transcript L

Even though your GPA is low, schools do like to see the "upward trend" that you've shown. You're reasonably well rounded, and although your PCAT isn't spectacular, it's good enough. You didn't mention whether you finished your degree, but if so, that would help you out too. By applying to so many schools, I think you've given yourself a good chance of scoring interviews to at least a few of them.

I decided to apply to pharmacy school very recently. I’ve always struggled with what I want to do after graduating from college. I had toyed with the idea of pharmacy school before (thus the experience, though somewhat scant, and having finished 80% of the prereqs), but I finally made that decision not long ago.

I know that my numbers are, well, excellent, and maybe I’m being silly for worrying about this so much, but I’m really concerned about 1) my lack of consistent pharmacy experience, 2) my lack of a good recommendation from a pharmacist, esp. since VCU requires one, and 3) my not-so-good interview skills. So any insight is much appreciated. Thanks!

a) Applying to UNC, VCU (in-state), SUNY Buffalo for sure. Thinking about but not sure about applying to UMDB and Ohio State.
b-d) Overall GPA = 4.00 (at UVA). Thus, math/sci GPA and recent GPA = 4.00 as well.
e) I will take the PCAT in mid-September. I am a good test-taker, I did great on the SAT and GRE, and looking at the material and prep book, I am confident that I can get in the 90th percentile or above.
f) I am a CPhT; volunteered in the school pharmacy for 1 year (50 hours total). I didn’t really make myself stand out though; I just did my job basically.
g) I am going to submit my application and start working on the supplementals as soon as I’ve polished my personal statement and checked stuff over. As for when the app will be complete, considering that I’m taking the PCAT in September, probably late October.

h) 3 LORs, one from my research advisor/professor (should be stellar), one from my supervisor at a summer job (should be good but not stellar), one from the supervisor of the pharmacy I volunteered at (should be average, or below average)
i) I’ve done R/D internship at a biopharma company for two summers, a year and two summers of undergrad research (several awards attached), TA for 2 years, tutor (paid and unpaid) for three years. I’ve volunteered at a hospital doing non-pharmacy-related stuff for a year (60 h).
j) I’m quite nervous about interviews but I’m told that I do better than I think. That having been said, my perception of my interview skills is mediocre at best.

1. Not a problem. Lots of people with substantially less impressive resumes than yours get into good pharmacy schools with zero experience, and at least you have a bit of volunteer experience.

2. As long as they don't write you a bad letter ("I don't recommend this student" bad) then you should be fine.

3. The interview is the only part you should be concerned about. Assuming a good PCAT score, your resume is pretty much flawless. But if you go into the interview and give off the "complete lack of social skills" vibe, they might think you're the book-smart, 4.0 student who can't talk to people. That's the only thing that I could see holding you back, honestly, and even if you do bomb the interview you could still get in. I feel like a broken record since I tell everybody this, but practice your interview skills as much as possible (mock interviews are you friend here!) and you should get in to every school you apply to.

Oh, and make sure you've got a good answer for "why pharmacy", since you just decided on it recently. Don't let them think you picked it on a whim.

I've posted on this thread before, but since then, I've gotten my PCAT score, and my official pharmcas GPA's, so lets see...

a. Schools you are applying to
Albany college of pharmacy
Concordia University
Creighton University
Harding University
LECOM bradenton school of pharmacy
Midwestern University (chicago)
Shenandoah University

b. Overall GPA (from pharmcas)
3.25

c. Math/Science GPA
Science = 3.19, math = 2.86

d. GPA in last one or two school years
3rd year GPA = 3.11, 4th year GPA = 3.47

Note on GPA: Due to technicalities, I'm taking/retaking about 7 prerequisite courses during this school year. I already finished my summer courses (Gen Bio 1 + lab, and psychology); I got an A for the lab, and I'm expecting A's for the other two, so hopefully they will make a small difference...

e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite)
Verbal Ability: 89
Biology: 91
Reading Comprehension: 76
Quantitative ability: 64
Chemistry: 90
Composite: 89

Writing: both 3.5

f. Pharmacy experience obtained
None, unfortunately. I did get PTCB-certified and licensed in CA earlier this year, but haven't been able to find any work.

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary)
Submitted on August 9th, still working on secondary apps, GPA calculated August 22nd.

h. Number of LORs and source of LORs
Three. One from upper division bio professor, one from public speaking professor, one from computational biology professor (though I'm still waiting on this one).

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience
  • Around 85 hours volunteering at major hospital, though mostly non-clinical.
  • Member of 2011 Senior Class Council (involved in philanthropy, putting on events for seniors).
  • Founding member (though not official founder) of public speaking club; unfortunately, the club formed during my last quarter at my university, so I couldn't do much.

j. Self-perception of interview skills
Not bad, though I have a mild stutter.

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
Well, I edited it about 5 times, so its probably not too shabby. I'd give it about a 7.5/10.

j. Self-perception of interview skills
I do get nervous and I am a bit shy, but besides that, I have been to interviews before and have had some success.
k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
I'm not the best essayist, but it was honest.

I'm pretty nervous of what my chances are. I didn't do terrible well on the QA portion... it's been about 4 years since I've taken Calculus so I was a bit rusty. I also haven't received an LOR from my boss pharmacist where I work, mainly because I still don't know him too well/ he and I don't have the best relationship. I'm wondering whether schools will look unfavorably at that since I'm working at a pharmacy now, and yet is not submitting an LOR from the pharmacist there.

Could you all recommend any other good schools that I can apply to on the East Coast that would be in my range?

Thanks a lot!!

Decent to good personal statement

If I don't get in this application cycle I'm already taking the GRE and applying to Masters programs to bring up my GPA. I know it's low and it's because I didn't care much when I first started my undergrad. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make myself more competitive. I also know my PCAT is low which is why I'm retaking it. I'm not expecting it to be real high as I've never been a good test taker with standardized tests, which is why I'll be shooting for the Masters program with high grades in the future. Any help would be appreciated.

What are my chances? I applied for USC,UC SD, LLU, and Western University . My accum GPA is 3.55 and my science/math GPA is 3.2. I am getting my BS in Biology from UCI this spring. I had almost 2 years volunteer experience in 2 pharmacies and 4 years of paid banking experience as my job. I submitted my PharmCas in mid-July . And they mailed it to the schools on 8/3.... I am so nervous ... plzzz helppp!!!😕😕

Merged into the WAMC thread, I'll respond to your other post though.

great, I try my best

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
Good

The GPA is on the low end of the average over the past several years at USC. I got in with a 3.59 in 2007. In 2008 the GPA average was 3.65, in 2009 nearly 3.7.
The AZ experience is intriguing.
The LORs will be beneficial as long as they're positive.

Overall. Chances are average. I would take as many interviews as I'm offered and hope to rock the interview. Don't be discouraged with waitlists. I got in off the waitlist at USC and Western in 2007 without an LOR from a pharmacist and no pharmacy experience. Those two things may be enough to get you in if everything else works in your favor.

What are my chances of getting into LIU as a transfer student since they only offer 30-50 seats? Or any other NY school? Is my lacking of pharmacy experience will cause me serious trouble?
Thank you so much in advance any advice will be appreciated!!

I've posted on this thread before, but since then, I've gotten my PCAT score, and my official pharmcas GPA's, so lets see...

Submitted on August 9th, still working on secondary apps, GPA calculated August 22nd.

  • Member of 2011 Senior Class Council (involved in philanthropy, putting on events for seniors).

j. Self-perception of interview skills
Not bad, though I have a mild stutter.

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
Well, I edited it about 5 times, so its probably not too shabby. I'd give it about a 7.5/10.

Anyone?

Thanks for your feedback. But you meant for only USC or for all of them...?

Our entering class this year had an average GPA of 3.5, so going by your stats I think you will be a competitive candidate for at least an interview at WesternU.

c. Math/Science GPA – ~ 3.0(ish) Could be a bit higher

I'm in the same boat as you, having done poorly throughout my undergraduate career until recently. I do know that Pacific University calculates your GPA based on the last 45 units that you took. Not sure about other schools though.

Thanks beforehand for any feedback. I particularly want to know if I have a chance at UT (Austin).

I think the Master's is a smart route if you do not get in this year, which seems pretty likely. You at least have pharmacy experience though, so maybe you will get lucky.

Good Luck.:luck:

I am serious since so many sdn members here have rich pharmacy-related experience while I have none, this concerned me a lot, thank you so much for the encouragement🙂

The assistant dean of my number once choice school recommends not retaking, even if you do badly. I don't know why... but they are a highly ranked school so maybe they have a secret. But your GPA is decent, and the PCAT isn't everything.
