As an undergra i was a duall major Math and biology however my Gpa wasnt good at all for the biology major and kinda killed my overall Gpa that became 2.7 ( cumulative) however my Math grades were excellent .... i still want go to medical school but i have no idea where to start to fix the damage ... i wanted to do a master and take a lot of biology classes and do really well then apply to medical school and take the Mcats please help me
iam really lost

A masters degree will not help you get into an allopathic med school, but it might help if it's heavy in the sciences to get you into a DO med school.

A faster route to fixing the damage would be to plan on applying to DO schools where their application service will replace a retaken grade with the more recent, when they figure your application GPA, rather than averaging it in, as MD schools will. Some DO schools will consider your application if your GPA is 2.75, and many will look at you if you get it over 3.0.

Why not figure out what would happen to your GPA if you retake all your science classes. Here is a DO GPA calculator to help you: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=450050

Taking more undergrad science classes can help raise your GPA too, but since you've already graduated, a year of full-time 4.0 coursework won't make enough of an impact. To qualify for a low-GPA redemption program called a Special Masters Program (SMP) for those who want to get into an MD program, you usually need a undergrad GPA over 3.0 and a decent MCAT score to qualify for aadmission. You can read more about this in the Postbaccalaureate Forum of SDN.

thanks so much for answering me ....
iam so lost i have a bunch of laboratory experience and a couple of papers that will get published hopefully before the end of the year i was thinking to push myself into medical school with my bad GPA is to apply to MD/PHD programs .... but i do still need to show a certain degree of knowledge in Biology .... so i think a year of 7 or 8 classes of biology will do me good...
i heard about the postbaccleurate program i certain feel as they are a waste of time .....so you think only DO programs will accept me ...
any other suggestion on what to do or when to apply or how to proceed from here please any comment will be helpful iam really desperate

MD is out of the question.

Re-take the classes you did poorly on. You're looking at at least one full year, if not two, of straight As. If you can do that you'll have a good shot at DO

Um are you sure because a lot of people suggested to me Mater ....
iam not a bad student but i just took each semester 20 credits to finish my two majors .... you really think i have no hope ?

Please positive feedback i already feel so horrible i dont know who to talk too or even what to do
iam intressted in MD/PHD and how is admission there harder than MD ?

I'm somewhat an optimist, so I hate to say that you have absolutely no hope...we don't know, we're not adcoms, we're pre-meds.

Unfortunately, your current GPA is the problem, and I'm not sure how many classes you would need to raise it up to be more competitive.

Have you considered going for a second bachelors degree in a hard science? You are probably looking at at least 2 more years, but maybe that could help.

A master's degree unfortunately doesn't figure into your GPA for med school even if you did get straight A's.

Even though I understand your desire to go the MD/PHD route, I think that might be even more competitive than the regular MD route. I just think that it might be a little out of your range. What I would do, is to research the schools that you would like to have applied to...make a list, and for each school, look to see what they would require for acceptance. Maybe there is one that is more open to your educational research to date.

The other question you need to ask is if you want to be more of a researcher or more of a clinician. If you want the former, maybe just continue working on a masters and trying to get into a PhD program. If a clinician is more what you want, seriously consider DO. You'll still need to bring up those grades, but it is possible. Once you have the DO, you can still have some research options, it just won't be as a PhD.

You need to decide what is important to you.

Wishing you the best in your future :luck::luck::luck::luck:

why master degree wont be considered if i will be taking mostly biology classes ....a lot of them and hard ones also ....really no hope
sorry guys but iam trying to see some light in this dark hole

Hey,

Its not to late for you to get into a MD program!

It's just going to take some extra hard work to make up for those poor grades.

You have a few options.

1) Look into the Special Masters Programs described above. Some of these programs will guarantee you admission to medical school provided you do well enough in the classes. It's OK to call medical schools office of admissions and ask if they know anything about these programs, there not very well advertised in some cases.

2) Take Upper Division science courses and do extremely well in them, maybe declare another minor. Do some calculations and see what it would take to get your GPA in the 3.0 range.

3) In addition to the first 2 options, you should also be engaging in some sort of activity that will make you irresistible. Have any ideas? Start a charity and raise thousands for underprivileged children. Stuff like that (I have a few ideas you could PM me about)

Hope this helps! Keep in mind you could also take some years and work then go back and apply as a non-traditional applicant.

Best of luck to you!

Don't get discouraged, there are many ways to get into med school. Some just take longer.

I am also an optimist. That being said, don't lose hope. If you really want to be a doctor, you need to inspire yourself to really dig your heals in the ground and work super hard core in a post bacc. If you do really well, some schools will accept you if there is a medical school linked to the post bacc program. That being said, you should look into those. Good luck. And, on the bright side of things, just think about using this time as a way of reflecting and enjoy your free time. Keep in mind, it isn't the end of the world.

i definitely can imagine that these aren't the answers you're looking for, but know that people here on SDN aren't just replying to boost your ego and make you happy. we're here to give and get honest advice, even if that advice isn't every applicant's dream answer.

it's going to take a lot to get you back onto the MD track. think carefully if the risk and the time you'll be spending for it is worth it. many people have a stigma against going the DO route either because they perceive it as the easier way through or simply because they haven't been raised around enough osteopathic doctors to understand what the profession entails.

this entire process is rough, and it doesn't really get much easier. i've learned from the beginning that it's almost best to toss any preconceived notions out the window, and then see where you can go from there. everyone has a dream school, and millions of people have the exact same dream school. not all of us can matriculate there though, can we? and at the end of the day, is it more important to have the institution name on your degree or know that you're serving others?

as for MD/PHD, i'm personally not going that route and so i can't give you much on it. it is definitely tougher though, and i'm imagining it's that way because of the ridiculously small amount of spots they offer.

🙁.... I always hate seeing posts like this because I know that there is way more to a person that makes a great doctor than just grades. I think you can make it.

Work your best to make your GPA above a 3.1 or so, then apply very broad. Seek advice with a medical admissions person as well. Hope this helps!

It'll be easier to bring your gpa up for the AACOMAS application (DO) because they offer grade forgiveness...so if you retake a class, only the most recent retake counts. AMCAS doesn't do that, they average all grades, counting both the original and the retake.

However, if your heart is set on MD, I wouldn't say its out of the question...it'll just take more time, I agree you'll have to bring your GPA up to probably a 3.0 at least, but I'm not an expert.

I've met plenty of great doctors who told me about how they failed O-chem the first time, or how they had to retake some classes. So I agree with the person who said that its about more than just the grades.

I wish you the best of luck! : )

Some of the greatest doctors are the ones who were humble as pre-meds. 🙂
