yeah yeah... i know. there are about hundreds of threads like mine, but i'm starting to question myself and need the opinions of others who know what they are talking about. i'm applying this next cycle and it's my first time. please share your thoughts.

School: UT-austin
Major: Bio
UT GPA: 3.3
UT Science GPA: 3.1
Overall GPA: 3.4
DAT: take it in June and will probably get a score around the 18s and 19s at the highest since thats what i've been making on practice tests.
Voluteering: I have lots of volunteering hours. I mentor two hours a week at a local elementary school. 40+ hours of serving breakfast at salvation army at 5 in the morning. Over 200+ hours helping children with disabilities at a rehab center. 20+ hours helping around in a community that houses adults with disabilites. then between 50-60 hours of other volunteer work at various fund raisers and events.

I've been involved in 3 different organization here on campus and I have about 50 hours of shadowing.

I recently had an interview with a college dean here and he pretty much put me down and indicated I probably wouldn't get in. I just need advice and opinions about what i should do and what i should work on. I know my grades aren't great and my DAT score will probably be avg, but do you think my volunteer work will help me atleast get an interview?

I'm great when it comes to working with people but i'm starting to loose confidence.🙁

Even though you go to a crappy school, your GPA is not bad at all. You need to kick butt on the DAT. Don't settle for an 18 or 19.

Three years ago at this point I was hoping for an 18 on the DAT just like you but then decided to push it back another month (to late July) for more studying and made a 22.

There is nothing keeping you from doing the same thing. Spend almost all of your spare time studying, push the DAT back to the end of July or even August if you have to, kick butt on the DAT, and show up to your interview confident that you have a strong application.

For any study tips, check out the DAT board on this site. I'd recommend Kaplan blue book, whatever online test programs people are using, and reading your old text books for bio, chem, and organic chem if you have time. On the textbook thing, don't waste time reading stuff you know well... skip over that and go on to the places where you don't have it down.

thanks aggie master. I take the DAT june 2nd and will move it back to early July or so because i don't feel quite ready.

don't move it back just for the sake of moving it back, make sure you actually utilize the time FULLY so you don't waste time on something else, like let's say applying early (key!). i had a similar GPA as you and studied as hard as I could for the DAT and got many interviews. gluck!
