Hey guys, today was my first interview by my pre-health professional committee. Everything went pretty good I guess but I was a bit curious about something. Every so often one of the interviewers would let out a snicker under his breath. It happened around 5 times and by more than one person, and i remember thinking to myself, "what could possibly be funny about what I'm saying right now?". Do the interviewers do this to mess with you while you answer? Or were they actually laughing at me? 🙁

At the very end I received a bunch of feedback but nothing too negative and my adviser even told me that she thought I did amazing for my first one 👍

Anyyyhoo, just wondering if these people actually snicker on purpose to get inside your head? :scared:

Maybe they read a funny joke before the interview.

You had your fly down.

Or you are just ugly.

This.

Don't even think of applying to a t20 med school or, once you get there, a competitive residency program. Beautiful people only. Enjoy your time practicing pediatrics in the boondocks.

maybe they were nervous too! then they got the church giggles

Ugly people can't go into peds, they would scare the kiddies.

Optho may be a better bet...

That's smart. You're dealing with people who can't see well, after all.

I, too, am appreciative of humor... but is there any chance of getting a serious response?

Umm..ask them? Their job is to help you succeed at getting into med school. Ask them if you were doing something wrong because they kept snickering.

If several interviewers snickered at you, its probably because you said something naive or typical of a pre-med. They probably interview tons of students and get kind of skeptical if they hear all the same kinds of answers.

Either that, or they're trying to mess with you.

You told them you knew how to play jiggly ball, didn't you?

Or they might all have had snickering tourette's

Something went wrong in a room with a bunch of people. In front of you. That can answer your questions directly.

But no, you come ask people online who weren't there and have no idea what was going on and can only base themselves off your complaints.

When did SDN start reading minds?!

Actually I thought it went pretty well.. I felt like I got along with everyone and they seemed to like me...

I was simply asking if quiet snickering is some kind of interviewing technique to make you more nervous than you already are, or maybe they want to see if they can make you second-guess your answer.

The interview went for almost 1.5 hours and it happened maybe 4 times. I don't know maybe my answers were too long. Fwiw I am not your average naive premed. I am 25 with a masters and quite a bit of medical experience so I know my answers couldn't have sounded that naive.

First, I am sorry for assuming the type of person you were. Although, that leads to second, by 25 you must have been to enough different interviews to just simply realize they were an atypical type. What I'm trying to say is I don't understand how laughing at you would make you a better applicant. Like someone said, maybe they had a joke beforehand and you got the unlucky time-slot.

I still don't think WE can tell you anything not being there. Only someone who was there can tell you if they were laughing at (I'm sorry), with (and you just didn't get it), or beside (as in you had nothing to do with it) you.

They could have been snickering because they compared you to their previous interviewees, in a good way. Sorta - this guy is great; wish all the other neurotic/lazy pre-meds were like him.

Hey, it's possible!

If they said you did well then forget about it and move on.

I dunno, guys, I'm still sticking with the original hypothesis: the OP is hideously ugly.

Cant you read? I scored an 8.04... gosh... 😉

Anyway I appreciate it everyone. I emailed my adviser and she told me that i did good and the committee liked me so I'm going to stop worrying about it. It's something that I can't change anyway. I think it was just some post-interview jitters :scared:

👍

If the pre-health committee interview made you that nervous, I would suggest wearing adult diapers to your actual interviews.
