I am a pre-dent but I have a question about my friend's (pre-pharm) chances. He is an MD resident
PCAT: 69
GPA: 2.9 upward trend (3.4 last year)
Pharm tech for two years

IMHO, his chances are borderline now, but would improve drastically if he got the GPA above 3.0.

I think he has a chance to do that this upcoming semester, his overall might be a 3.06 when he graduates next semester. We calculated for him...

Personally, I believe that it's rather silly say could/should/will/would for things like GPA before the semester has even started. (I think the same thing regarding PCAT's, i.e. I plan on having a PCAT of 80+, for people who haven't even taken the exam.) Point being, TONS of people come onto SDN and state, 'I plan to get all A's next semester' or 'I intend to get my GPA above a 3.0 when I apply'. If you do those things, your chances will OBVIOUSLY be better.

However, you haven't done them yet and there's no guarantee that they will happen. Given current stats and current trends, even with the upward increase in GPA, chances are possible, not probable, given their current stats. Yes, if the GPA improves, chances are better.

As for schools, the applicant should do some searching themselves because people replying to this thread can't possibly surmise where the student wants to live, whether they want a 3 vs. 4 year pharmacy school, etc. There are tons of variables and it's rather inane to ask for our opinions when the student has provided little information regarding the variables important to them.

Also depends on other applicants for the same school and how competitive they are.

Realistically speaking we think that he will get a 3.4 this semester, which will bring it up to a 3.06 or so. His GPA is like a 2.97 or sty like that right now.
He really wants to get in Umaryland.
Notre dame and VCU being the other choices. I just want to have consensus if you have seen students to get in with those scores. Again, he has been a pharm tech for 2 years an he has excellent recommendations

Would it really be shocking consider the kinds of questions that are asked here?
 
I am in similar situation as your friend but with better GPA. Some schools I talked to, Texas Tech and UT Austin, have told me that 69 on pcat is within their range so I was encouraged to apply... although I'm going to wait until next year so I can apply once I finish up my pre-reqs.

So I would think that PCAT shouldn't be an issue as long as your friend applies to schools with low 70's average on pcat and is able to raise his GPA above at least 3.4 or 3.5 which is what I would assume you would need with with his pcat score.
 
I think the last time I looked at GPA averages for Arizona it was around 3.6. And from what I've seen of PCAT scores of students who got invites, theirs were in the 80s. That's just observational. I think 60 is the minimum for chem portion though...

Of course, all schools are different. You can probably ask for this kind of info from the CoP departments to see how your friend falls in relation to last year's stats.

A few comments:

If your friend would have spent 1 second searching google with the topic "maryland pharmacy average stats," the first link that appears is Maryland's PharmCAS School Page. (People wonder why Reading Comprehension scores are plummeting ...)

The above link states that that the average GPA is a 3.4 and the minimum composite for the PCAT is a 70. Therefore, the stats simply aren't good enough.

Furthermore, solid LOR's are pretty much expected, so that doesn't hold much stock. Pharm Tech experience will help, but frankly ... The GPA is well below the average for the accepted students and the PCAT isn't even above the minimum composite required by the school. Your friend has some work to do if he/she wants to go to Maryland ...
