I am sick of Chemistry to say the least. It has totally screwed up my GPA. I have made a D in both general and both organic, so yes my GPA is sub-3.0.

My point being, I am trying to decide if I want to have a talk with the Dean of Admissions at my choice school or not. He will be coming in June to have dinner with the pre-dents at my school. So Should I try and talk to him about my determination, dedication, and desire to get into his school? I don't want to give up becoming a dentist because of a subject that I do so poorly in (that would just be insane), but I also don't want my app to be thrown out of the pile because of these D's I've struggled with so much.

Do you think he would care to listen to what I have to say?

I think too many of us let fear rule our lives. What is the worst that could happen? He doesn't listen to you or says, "You're an idiot. . .don't bother applying." 😱 In either case, you wont be any worse off than you are now. But, you could develop a relationship in a casual relationship with him where he can offer advise or commentary.

On the other hand, you will need to get those grades up. It is not acceptable to have D credit in a prereq nor will it boost your DAT (which will probably need to compensate for your gpa). Retake the courses, committ to studying as hard as necessary (12-15, 20 hours a week, if necessary), find a study group, become friends with the professor, or get a tutor. There are things you can do. Chemistry is hard--one of my worst subjects by far, but with work and determination you can do it. Good luck.

You should either retake the class...or find out the problem so it doesn't happen again. I'm not sure how sympathetic he would be...talking to him wouldn't be such a bad thing though, but I doubt he'd remember you later. Just try to bring the GPA up.

Thanks for the replies. I will be retaking two of the classes this summer.

As far as trying harder, I'm fresh out of ideas. I have a tutor, I make myself known to every teacher and see them on a regular basis, I've had study groups (even including a guy that makes a perfect score each time), and I practice practice practice. One thing can be said though is that my study skills have improved so much since I transferred to the university.

Maybe it's just one of those things that I won't ever be able to succeed at.

Thanks again, now on to study for the DAT since classes are over.

Most schools will only accept a "C" or higher in prereq courses. You need to retake all of these classes. Change up your studying habits, because they are not working with these classes. Good luck

Many folks do not recognize the real purpose of the chemistry prereqs for premeds and predents. The lectures and labs are designed to check out your propensity to study and prepare in a regular business like manner vs cramming at the last possible moment. Cramming can work real good in a lot of undergrad courses but will likley prove fatal in medical and dental school

i dont mean to sound insensitive but why did u continue after getting a D in g chem 1 in the first place. and if u ask me dont start studying for the dat until u get good grades in g chem o chem doesnt make sense. Dissect the material on ur own until u master it dont rely on study groups, tutor, or "seeing the teacher on a regular basis." Anyways if u make a complete transformation meaning u begin studying efficiently for long periods of time well before the exam, and get straight A's.....> itll be a nice story to talk about during ur interviews. good luck.

heyyy so you all think that retaking a C in a prerec would be a waste of time then?

you know, it's not goign to matter since if you re-take it, it will show up on your transcript and aadsas application anyways and the ADCOMs are goign to know that you re-took it. So I dont' think it's worth it. If you have just very few Cs, it's not going to matter in the big picture, and if you have lots of Cs, retaking it on one class will also not affect the big picture. So for get about it. I had 6 C's in my pre-reqs alone!! and it didn't bother me none.

I'm thinking about retaking a pre-req this summer, in which i have a mark below "C". I dont really understand how this willl work.. will they see my mark below "C" in a pre-req, and toss out my application right there?

Retake, get an A, and then they will think twice about tossing your application. They will still see the "C", but at least they'll know that you can challenge your mistakes and succeed. Work hard.

yah that C is gonna hurt you....def take it over.....plus I noticed your DAT scores are very low.....you MUST retake the DAT otherwise EVERY single school will throw your application in the garbage in 5 seconds.

don't sweat it... dr. worley is tough as nails. it happens to the best of us.

cya at the dinner with dr. filler.

have a good summer... good luck w/ your DAT.

Give him a lot of wine to drink he'll listen to whatever you say.

PS: Worry too much you'll go bald sooner.

i don't think SHE is going bald anytime soon

If I re-take the Candian DAT in October, will that be too late for consideration?

😕

Good question, I am an extremely hard-headed person, and always have the mentality "oh, I can do it" when I really can't.

No I dont think so.....most Canadian students do it that way and do it successfully.....you realize that you can still hand in your AADSAS application before your DAT scores are released to get things moving faster....

Hey don't feel too bad, I retook organic II this semester. Got a D the first time, a C the second time. I'll prob take it a THIRD time if I can fit it in my schedule and get an A in that f*****g class!!! 😡 😡 😡

if that is the case, then why not study harder to get decent grades

Chemistry...I've always had a B and above until a C this semester in organic II. But this semester I've had straight Cs (I took 4 science classes so how many Cs is that?) Dont' feel bad. Just try harder. Me, I don't even know what to do but am sure you're in better shoes than I with a GPA of 2.7 yikes.......* 😕

I've had a bad history with Chemistry as well. D in Gen Chem I (which I retook and got a B), C in gen chem II, B in Orgo I, and just this semester, C+ in Orgo II.

I also got straight C's this semester. Orgo II + Physics II + Cell Tissue/Development + Lab was brutal to say the least. And I'm also sitting on a 2.7/2.8. :scared:

Are you guys applying this year?

The science courses you take in undergrad are meant to prepare you for the courses you'll be taking in dental school and more importantly the subjects tested on in the boards. I think any admissions staff anywhere seeing D's and C's in General Chemistry is going to raise serious issues considering they're looking for applicants who will make it through all the rigors associated with the school.

Honestly if those courses were such a hassle what do you think taking 30+ hours a semester on top of additional lab work is going to be like.

Your grade in organic doesn't necessarily reflect how well you'll do on the organic section on the DAT...It all depends on how hard your course is compared to other schools organic courses, or how hard your professor writes tests...I, for example, got a C+ in organic I, and just managed to scrape a B in organic II by .1...but I got a 29 on the organic section of the test...and I studied the LEAST for this section, and didn't even study that long for the test overall...
I agree with this completely, because although I made D's Organic, I keep getting the highest score on the practice DATs from Kaplan (knock on wood, hopefully it doesn't reverse itself!).
