Hi

I think I'm going to apply to dental school. I'm 28 yrs old and an internet entreprenuer. I'm also a former premed and took the relevant coursework and MCAT (35) back in 2004.

I have a pretty good income from the internet that requires virtually no work (5 minutes a week), I want to be a part time dentist/orthodontist to make some extra cash on the side. I'm also pretty bored doing nothing.

Internet businessess. no, not porn or gambling. haha.

BTW, i'm not a troll. I'm simply a late 20s entrepreneur who wants a secure and flexible part time job to carry me thru the "tuff times". If my attitue upsets you, i'm sorry. My interest in dentistry is admittedly superficial. I dont have a great passion for fixing teeth like some of you.


Lifestyle and money are important to me, I will fully admit (can you admit that?). Dentists live a great lifestyle. Call me a troll if it helps you thru the day. I'm sure some of you college students have no real experience when it comes to issues relating to working, salary, stability, family, bills, 401k plans, health insurance, etc.

First time I heard it was like 2 weeks ago.

I Was job shadowing w/ a dentist. He introduced me to a younger patient (my age) and said in a sarcastic tone "this is so and so...he is emotionally torn whether or not to become a dentist, so he is hanging out here today seeing what it is like to be a rock star". Then I died laughing. So now when I say I want to be a dentist, I just say rock star instead.

Since then I have seen people on here say it. Maybe I just never noticed people saying it on here before. Who knows.

Take it from me, the majority of fellow interviewees at the dental schools to which I applied were all computer scinece types who were suffering poorly in the post-dot-com-bust era, and clearly deserved a fair shake at making the assload of money to which they were clearly entitled. im guessing either some type of google adsense / affliate program type website. i am making about 1500-2000 a month. pretty good for side income. i've heard about guys who make 6 figure salaries with this.

Well, when you get to dental school, don't worry about doing nothing. It might be boring for you though, especially if you have no interest in teeth or patient care. You'll also have to work your ass off if you plan to get into an ortho residency. Hope you're looking forward to 7 years of school.

Maybe you should look into investing your money into some kind of business and then running that.

Dental school is going to set you back a few hundred thousand and take tons of work to become an orthodontist and with your alleged ability to rake in money in other places I don't see how it would be worth it for you.

Seriously though, If you're just in dentistry for the money or "sump'n ta do" while your computer churns out hundrend dollar bills, you might consider a different career. The best dentists/orthodontists are those that live their profession and sincerely care about their patients' well being - not those who decide to do a few implants to make up for lost website affiliate income. On the other hand, I apologize if I am misreading your motives. Just make sure this is where your heart is - as a patient, I would not want to go to a dentist who chose his or her profession out of boredom.

- private practice average income = $420k, based on a survey by the American Assocation of Orthodontists
- average # days worked: 4
- average # hours worked per week: 32

No, ur not misreading my motives. I want a lot of money and I dont want to work very many hours. Dentistry fits the bill. My websites will allow me to live relatively comfortably and support a familiy as a dental student. After residency, I have no problems working 3 days a week, 300k.

I think you are making an assumption that you'll finish near the top of your dental school class and that is not an assumption that I would make. I've had an academic career of finishing at or near the top of each individual class, but I'm not making any assumptions when I go to dental school. It's going to be filled with people that did well in college and you never know who is going to out shine the others.

ur correct, orthodontics is prolly as competitive as plastic surgery, interventional radiology, neurosurgery,etc. However, generally, I've found the maxim, "where theres a will, theres a way" is a wise one. If i fail to land an ortho spot, I'll happily make 200k workin 3 days a week as a GP.

good luck with that... at MS i had the 30 minute interviews (3 separate ones) to which you alluded....but at my TN interview there were 4 people interviewing me in MAYBE a 10 minute timespan...not a whole lot of time to make an impression (yet i did) so good luck with that

I was wondering if you are a silicon valley guy or somewhere like that? RTP? I don't remember where all the other tech places are. Are their lots of guys in your field in your area who are alos thinking of jumping ship to dentistry?

ur correct, orthodontics is prolly as competitive as plastic surgery, interventional radiology, neurosurgery,etc. However, generally, I've found the maxim, "where theres a will, theres a way" is a wise one. If i fail to land an ortho spot, I'll happily make 200k workin 3 days a week as a GP.

You will not bring in 200k as a GP unless you've been practicing for years and years, and you have a big community of patients...

If side job is what you want, you definitely will not EVER bring in 200k as a dentist...

one thing nice about this website is that one is exposed to one's colleagues before classes begin! what a bunch of dinguses! my business partner just got a job offer right out of his GPR for $1200/day plus 30% commission. that is well over 200k/year, and he is only working 3 days a week. i don't think anyone of us has a handle on real market conditions which vary greatly depending upon location. i think it is so funny when people talk about passion, and make it sound like passion is the only reason they are going into dentistry. please--do you mean to tell us that as an undergraduate, you people are so concerned with the healthy mouths of everyone?? i think'yall have been practicing for your interviews a little too much!!
Give the guys some credit. maybe he did pull a 35 on mcat and decided against medicine b/c of certain people he knew he would have to deal with everyday for the next 10 years... 😀

Mr. Polynikes sir, i hate to be the one to inform you, but savannah, Ga is not as good as it gets. with a school that caters to Ga residents almost exclusively, i can understand why your vision and understanding about what a gp makes is a bit skewed.

Good post. I did pull a 35 on the mcat. not a great score, only scored a 10 on the verbal. good enough for 94-96%. got into a few medschools but chose a phd program instead (MIT). abandoned that, too, when i realized that phd's make nothing unless you've got 20 years experience. then you can make some good change as a consultant or entreprenuer. i'm not one of those idiot, mindless premeds who had no other option than become a MD.

7 years is a "relative" breeze if you have a side income of ~15,000$ a month. 😎 Additionaly, as a former premed, 7 years ia 35-50% shorter than the path to radiology or orthopedic surgery. GP with no residency is amazing.

DDS is a smart investment, (un)fortunately most dentists are idiot businessmen/women and set up shop in saturated markets.

everyone wants money, honey...that's how we survive in today's world. but some of us really do want to do good things with our lives. the people i'm going to be working on are just that, people... that's going to be someone's mom, cousin, sister, husband, best friend, etc. sitting in my chair. i know i want others to treat my loved ones right so i'm going to do my best to see to it that i help people. that's what dentistry is...it's service to the community. granted, you make a nice living doing it...but ultimately i want to go home at the end of the day knowing i made a difference in this world. not everyone appreciates dentists but oh well...it's what i want to do.

i want to see that kids who are underprivilidged and want to go to school are not missing classes because they have oral infections/diseases. you only live once so why not use at least some of your time to be a positive force in society. it would be refreshing to look beyond our short-term goals of DAT scores, GPA's, and hooking up in dental school and spend a little time thinking about how we might be able to use our gifts to make a lasting contribution.

maddy i'm with you on that one but don't forget those of us down south! we care too! well...at least i do...and lily...not everyone has your viewpoint that no one else gives a s### about anyone else. maybe that's how you were raised but i for one was not. my family brought me up to care about others and how they are treated...which is one reason i'm going into this profession. and no, i'm not naive. i know there some are a##holes out there since i've worked in a public service capacity for several years while in school. but you know what? kindness spreads just as easily as smiles, only you gotta actually put in the effort...but people like you apparently don't want to take that time. how sad...
