i ment the E or Z part

E or Z is used to denote how the two heaviest (molecular weight) groups relate to one another on either side of an alkene.

E is used when they are opposite of one another. Z is when they are on the same side as one another.

In this case. Bromine has the largest molecular weight on the right side of the double bond, and CH3 has the largest molecular weight on the left side of the double bond. They are both on the same side of the molecule so they must have Z/Zaitsev/Zame Zide orientation. Capiche?

laz, watch out its not MW! the higher the ATOMIC NUMBER gets the higher priority!


OK, looking at the picture originally posted. Lets switch out that -Br for -CH2Br and also switch out the CH3 right above it for -Br, kind of like this:

H-C=C-BR

H3C CH2Br


So what would it be now?

even though Br has a lower MW than CH2Br it has higher priority

even if you had -CHBR for in place of the -CH3 on the BR side it would still be Z

you go my molecular weight of the first attachement in the case of -CH2BR vs -Br the Br weighs more then the C on -CH2Br

you DONT go by MW you go by Atomic #.

Example if you have CH3Br and Br, CH3Br has the higher MW. However Br gets the priority over CH3 because it has the higher Atomic #.
