Does anyone know how competitive it is to get into a Navy surgery residency/gen surg internship? Would doing either Flight Surgery or Dive prior to applying really help? If anyone has any experience with a navy gen surg internship please share. Your input will be greatly appreciated!

You have to do Flight/Dive after internship, so doing them will not help you get an internship. The do improve your chances for residency though.

General Surgery has become less competitive over the past several years, but not an automatic. Selection rates depend on the year and how many are applying for what specialty.

The biggest hurdle to overcome is simply the fact that there are more GenSurg interns than there are PGY2 slots. Although the Navy is trying to promote more straight through training there are still many people out in the fleet who are waiting for their PGY2 slots so I would not count on going straight through. I know this year at portsmouth 2 went straight through, and they had something like six interns or so.

I realize that not everyone doing a GS internship wants to continue in that field; however, there is still enough demand to make the chances of straight through training low.

thanks for the much needed info 🙂
