Could someone explain me how do they score the exam?
I have a terrible confusion, a friend of mine scored 74
bioc:46 national mean63 dental anat 63national mean 73
anat:63 national mean63 micro 57 national mean 61
how did they jump to that conclusion? is scary!!

Your friend scored below the national averagve in every section except anatomy. They still almost passed the test however

Your friend got 229 corrects/400 (57%), and the composite avg was 74, which is close to passing.

I think that is what people on this forum have been saying about the number of corrects that you need to pass Part I.

Actually, I am even a bit surprised that you have to do better than 57% to pass 🙄

Actually your friend was pretty lucky to have almost passed with all the scores being below 75%. With the older version, they would have failed miserably. Now your friend knows what to expect. I would take it sooner than later to retake the exam, their chances are better at passing.Tell them good luck and to review old exams.👍

Does that mean that minimally you have to meet the National Mean for every section to pass with a 75%? For instance, if his friend got this:

Bioch/Physio = 63 (and national mean is also 63)
Dental ana = 73 (NM = 73)
anatomic = 63 (NM = 63)
micro/path = 61 (NM = 61)

...then would he pass with the exact 75% composite score? Or there is another way to calculate this confusing new NBDE score.

I don't think you can add the percentages to say how many questions were answered right in total. Unless stated specifically we don't know how many out of 400 were answered correctly again bc the ways the scores are calculated, a 73 percentile does not mean you answered 73 correct out of 100.

Based on my brief reading of the tech paper on how they come up with a passing raw score (on ADA webpage), it seemed like a committee of people get together and decide on a raw score that they would consider to be a reasonable passing score for a particular exam. Then they would set that score to be 75. If I understood correctly, the 'reasonable raw score is not based on other people's performance (ie. national average), but simply based on the judgement of the committee as to what they think a candidate must know as a minimum to be a dentist.

but then I may be ALL WRONG..🙂 the paper had lots of stats/formulas that I did not understand.

whaterver the case, let's just do our best and see where the fate will take us to.
