I'm starting this thread for questions that people might have so that they can be answered by those already there.

Here is my current question:
1. Parking permits - looks like the CVM is under the CC and M permits. Can the permits be moved between vehicles? I've got 3 bikes that will need rotated and my truck. Obviously I won't be driving more than one vehicle in a given day, and that's $486 for permits alone.

Well now that you've quoted my original message everyone can see what I deleted. 🙂 I'm just waking up, and haven't regained all of my impulse control yet.

Hey Armymutt! I just got accepted this year as well. Ive done my masters and undergrad at state, and as far as I know, I have never had an issue with switching permits between vehicles. I dont think they check too often and when they do, they just glance at the windshield to see that the permit is there and is the correct one. This has only been on main and centennial campus, but I doubt it would be any different. Also, there is free parking across the road (Blue Ridge...its at the fairgrounds). I park there with no problems every week for my class at the vet school this semester! Hope that is at least somewhat helpful

You can register your overly expensive permit (over $300) between as many vehicles as your heart desires, but it is a pain. It's a reflective tag that must go in the front right of your windshield, and in between transfering mine between vehicles, it fell, and was coated in gravel, impossible to clean...they'll replace it, but requires a trip to transportation. You are suppose to file the licence plate #'s (online) for each vehicle you will use the tag for. Good news is you will likely always have a downstairs, front and center parking spot in the parking deck with a motorcycle, and 95% of the time it's warm enough to ride in, at least if you have decent gear. Saddly, my motorcycle is in Indiana, and I don't have time to pick it up.

Parrot love is correct about the parking across the street. one caveat, several times a year that parking is NOT available, and students have to scramble for rides (but worst case you drive to another student's place, leave your vehicle there, and carpool in.)

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the vet school parking lot offers day permits? I know of at least 3 other lots on campus which do...

not technically.

if you are there visiting, you get a visitors permit.

Also, our permits aren't good at most of the main campus lots (or at least not till after 5/6pm? I don't go to main campus because it was absurd the restriction for the money were paying)

It's a motorcycle - has wheels and a motor. No need to pick it up, just ride it! 😀

LOL. yes, but that requires going to indiana when there isn't 3' of snow on the ground....not to mention the appalacian passes on the way back. Every time I've gone back, the weather hasn't been...ummm....ideal. and while I have decent gear, I don't have ice gear.

Just keep your feet on the ground and go slow - you'll be ok. If gas keeps going up, you'll see me riding to school bundled up in an electric suit ride a '72 BMW with a sidecar.

LOL. mines a 79 honda CB650. never been touched by a man. I'm a shorty, so I can only really sit smaller bikes, but she's a dignified little machine.

Just to tell you - I'm an undergrad here and I've been told flat out by Transportation representatives that they don't care if the permit isn't registered to the vehicle its on. So honestly, I wouldn't bother registering it in more than one if you do buy one.

Will we need to purchase a stethoscope for first year?

I'm not chomping at the bit to start accumulating supplies for school, but merely curious. I'm sure we'll get plenty of information about what we need to purchase during orientation and through emails, but I just thought I'd ask!

we used stethoscopes in the large animal unit first year, and there are some awesome wetlabs where having a steth helps.

Think I could get away with putting a motorcycle permit on my Xterra and parking it on the first level of the garage?

Probably for a little while, but most likely you'd eventually get caught; first time, you generally get a warning and then after that you start getting tickets. I don't know what colour motorcycle permits look like or I'd tell you if they're similar in style to the CC permits.

If you do ride a lot, I'd probably suggest just getting a motorcycle pass - they're what, $60 and have a pretty awesome little spot in the deck - and then parking across the street when you need to drive your car. Just always use your bike when its state fair season.

Can we get M permits? I was under the impression that we were limited to the CC permits and could only get M in addition to? I could be wrong.

I don't have a motorcycle so I haven't ever done research on it, but from the transportation website it seems like they're available without a car - just really cheap if you do have a current other-vehicle permit. Click I know at least two people who have motorcycles as their only form of transportation, so I couldn't image they'd be forced to buy a car permit first. Not a vet student, though, so take everything with a grain of salt and it wouldn't hurt to contact transportation.

Does NCSU offer a free/discounted pet food program? If so, what brands?

Hills, purina, discounted. limits to how much you can get, but I can feed all 7 dogs and 2 cats on what I can get.

Next question; What are the rules governing the use of the pools at NCSU? Recent operations at work have resulted in a decrease in my running endurance - need to give my knee time to heal before I beat it down again. Swimming is going to have to become a major cardio thing for me.

Pool is on main campus. So I don't know much about it. I know you have access to it like any other student, and parking is a pain.
