Hi everyone,

I'm in my fourth year of undergrad and I have a cGPA of 3.81 and a sGPA of 3.80. My best 2 years (for UofT) is 3.88. I have taken the canadian DAT and have scored the following
AA-18
Biology-18
Chemistry-17
RC-18
Total science-18
Carving-5 (very dismal, but at the moment only interested at UofT, which I applied to this year)

In the event I don't get into UofT dental school, I'd like to apply to US dental schools for the Sept 2011 entry.

Are these scores good enough? Is it advisable for me to take the American DAT? I know COlumbia, NYU, Tufts, Penn, Boston are canadian friendly schools. Any chances I have with those schools?

Thanks in advance!

You have a good shot at UofT. They don't consider the carving at all, and they don't value the DAT as a large portion of the application. I'm in second year here - I got a 4 on the carving, due to it breaking after the fact, but I still got in. My undergrad GPA was 3.5 but I had a M.Sc. too (that really helped).

Case Western is very positive to UofT grads. I got in there but didn't want to pay the huge fees. I also interviewed at Nova Southeastern and Boston. The Boston interviewer actually came to Toronto! Private message me if you have any questions about UofT dentistry.

Thanks a lot Ostracized! But, since I'm in my 4th year and in the event I don't get into UofT dental, is it advisable for me to do my Masters for that one year or can I work at a research lab full time? Will I be penalized for not going to school for a year?

Do you think it's wise for me to retake my Canadian DAT for the Canadian-friendly US schools?

Thanks in advance!

your gpa is very good. In terms of your dat, i think you might be fine if you decide not to rewrite it. Personally, I would rewrite it even with your other statistics.

Oh, thanks xzero!

But, do you know if the Canadian-friendly US schools weigh both the DAT and the GPA equally? I know here at UofT, 60% is GPA and 10% is DAT.

And for US schools, it helps to have shadowed a dentist right? How many hours is recommended? I am scheduled to shadow my dentist for just a day. Would that be enough? Is an LOR highly recommended from a dentist?

Thanks in advance 🙂

For UofT, I would highly recommend a proper masters over unstructured lab work. People with advanced degrees get into UofT.
