Hello Everyone,

Here is my Situation:

I have a bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Administration completed with a 3.6 gpa. The only science classes l took was a series of Anatomy and Physiology back in 2012.

I was accepted to Fordham University Post Bac program and anticipated on attending their Westchester campus in January but I was told that classes weren’t offered there until I spoke with my advisor a week ago to register for classes, like really last minute, so Rose Hill it will be !!!!

I applied to the program in August, interviewed in October ( because they were in the process of hiring a new director).

Anyways I am freaking out because so far there seems to be no structure there as they made it seem at my interview. The advisor of the program didn’t have my transcripts at the time of my phone meeting with her so she just kind of threw me classes; Bio 101 + lab, Chem 101 + Lab, and Sociology. I ended up dropping sociology because I already completed it. So I registered myself for Calculus I instead.

I don’t want to jump to conclusions about the program being that I haven’t even attended yet but now I’m finding out that Financial Aid may not be an option for me since I exceeded my Independent Undergrad loan limit. They advise student to apply for grad plus loan but I do not want to do this yet! I received the letter from them Friday(11/17/17) dated 11/13, telling me that I need to respond within a week, which would be today.

What I was thinking of doing:

I was thinking of asking FU if I would be able to enroll in their Conservative Biology Certificate program, which is one 15 credit to complete (8 to 11 months), and take my prerequisite within the program before completing it. This way I would hopefully have access to Financial Aid.

Their Masters in Biology requires science pre-read that I don’t have. The program seems like my only option this late in the year but I was reading that most biology majors applicants don’t even get interviews to Medical School, so what now.

My questions to you:

  1. Does "majoring in bio and not getting medical school interviews" apply to non-traditionals applicants?? Should I do it ?
  2. What other options do I have ?

My original plan:

My plan was to take basic science classes all next year 2018, then take the MCATS the following year and apply to medical schools, while finishing up higher level science classes.

A little more background:

I worked in healthcare field since I was 18, I'm now 25.
I live in CT.
I have volunteer experience, as well as 5 months of Clinical research, 40 hours of primary care physician shadowing (and I work along side a Orthopedic Surgeon for past 2 years).
I have a volunteer of the month award 2017 from my town.
Medical assistant training in 2012
And I really don't know if any of this matter but 🙂

Really want to help, but TBH, stopped reading after 2nd sentence of massive paragraph cuz all I see is a massive block of letters.

Break it up into chunks. (see what I did?)

+1

List your main questions with bullet points.

Okay, thanks for the advice this is my first post. I will edit

Q1: Your major does not matter in med school admissions decisions. As long as you have a BA and meet the schools pre-reqs at time of matriculation.

Q2: with a 3.6 already, you don't need a formal post BAC that is costly like at FU. Do a DIY post BAC, taking the science pre- reqs at a less costly college. Research med schools using MSAR that accepts CC credit and take freshman sciences there to save money and then upper division sciences at a 4 yr institution.

Getting a master's will help little since your undergrad GPA (postbac grades included) are what admissions committees will look at.

Idk where you got that info that “bio majors don’t get med school interviews”. The majority of applicants are bio majors. I’ve been at interviews where i was the only one in the room who wasn’t either bio or chem.

While researching on this forum I came across a thread about Bio major not getting Med school interviews. So conservation Bio certificate wouldn't be an issue, great to know.

Thank you for the advice. FU just quoted me $33,462 for 40-45 credits, which I would have to take out a loan. I am going to look into the diy route.

You might also look to add some primary care physician shadowing while doing your DIY postbacc.

As a non-trad, going and doing CC postbacc courses won't be an issue per @Goro (as long as MSAR says the med school accepts the CC courses).

GL!!
