Hi everyone,

Wanted to get everyones take on my odds and get advice as to what you think I should do to increase my odds of getting in next cycle (applying 2014)...here are my stats

Undergrad ogpa: 2.78 (yes im a sub 3.0-oer)
Masters of biomedical sciences gpa: 3.9
DAT: PAT=17, QR=21, RC=23, Bio=22, GC=19, OC=23, TS=21, AA=22
4 solid reccs
8 credits at UMDNJ dental school with grades of A (5 credit class) and B+
~50 hours shadowing
Plenty of research experience in academia and industry (including research that was published in a top journal)...I hope and WANT to use all this training as a scientist to innovate in the dental field should I get a shot at dental school
Decent amount of volunteering/community service (although I plan on doing more)

I'm hoping my personal statement can also give me an extra umph or nudge...I've had dental problems my entire life (8+ years of braces, speech issues, alot of pain, including orthognathic surgery that ill be receiving in a few months for TMD, will have my jaw wired shut for a month and liquid only diet for a month!!)....the last thing is, that although I should apply to as many schools as possible, my mom was diagnosed with a serious form of cancer this summer and I STRONGLY prefer to stay local (NYU, UMDNJ etc)

With all of that being said I need all of your help. My top choice is UMDNJ. What do you guys recommend to give myself a shot? Should I take the DAT again??...I was actually dissappointed with the scores since I was getting 25s on the sciences on my practice tests and ended up with a 22, and I lost track of time during the PAT which was a huge mistake

As far as extra cirruculars is there anything else you guys would suggest?? All comments, negative and positive, are appreciated..thanks

In my opinion, there is NO point of retaking the DAT. 22AA is a great score, and to be honest, I don't think any DAT score can compensate for a sub 3.0. If you look at current and previous cycles, you have a better chance of getting interviews with high gpa and low-average DAT. However, you did a master and received a great GPA so I think you will be fine.

I recommend applying to 15+ schools next cycle and hope for the best..

Everything but the uGPA seems spectacular, not sure besides keep making great grades if you can and shadow more. No reason not to have >100 hrs if possible.

When you relate your experiences as a dental patient , be sure to focus more on how that will make you a better dentist, and make sure to have your personal statement read by multiple credible sources before you submit.

And obviously don't include in your personal statement that you want to go to NJ to stay close to your mom. That'll be in a letter send individually to those schools
