Need Help Making a School List and general advice for applying this cycle.

I am going to be sending in my primary today or tomorrow and need help making a school list. I am a Texas resident and am for sure applying to TCOM because of the quality of the program and the cost. One of my primary worries is cost and I would like to go to schools with a lower cost of living or tuition but understand you generally go wherever you can get in.

GPA- 3.9
Science GPA AACOMAS-3.9 , Science GPA TMDSA / AAMCAS - 3.7
MCAT- 505
Ethnicity- Hispanic / South American but racially white (not sure if this counts as URM)?
Pre-Med. Committee Letter Recommendation received

Activities:

- Pre SOMA

- Shadowing M.D.


- University Gymnastics Team - Event coordinator

Apply to all your Texas MD schools this month. Also apply to DO schools and in addition to TCOM consider these:

AZCOM

LECOM ( all schools)

ACOM
You could also try some AMCAS MD schools and I suggest these:

I also agree. Apply to all schools in Texas. Your scores should do you well to get in an MD school so make that your first priority and if you want a few DO schools for safety, do some research and find ones that you like.

Apply to all the schools I listed and you should receive several interviews. Your stats are competitive for all DO schools.

I wouldn't settle for anything other than a Texas school. We got great tuition rates in Texas and you got the stats to get multiple interviews this cycle. Good luck!

Really appreciate it. Started at a 494 on my practice tests so I'm really happy with the progress I made.

They are usually long established schools with a history of a good residency match for their graduates. The newer schools on the list also appear to have a good match.

This is one of those rare times I disagree with the wise Faha.

I can't recommend OOS MD schools or UIWCOM. TCU/UNT will be fine.

To the list, add CCOM (but watch tuition!), Touro-CA, PCOM, both Westerns

Would you not recommend OOS MD because my stats are too low? Or is there another reason? My science GPA for MD is 3.401 v my DO science GPA of 3.694 because it does not count any of my nutrition or kinesiology courses. I am a nutrition major so nutrition and kinesiology end up boosting my science GPA a lot.

Correct to the bolded. Med schools know from historic norms that Texans stay in TX, thanks to that nice low tuition.

Hmmm, would there be no point in trying then? If they look at my lower than average stats. for MD is there a chance that they could come to the conclusions that my options are more limited or would I be automatically filtered out?

Seems like you keep asking the same questions. Honestly, take a breath.......your scores are good. If I was in your shoes, I'd apply to 5-7 DO programs because you'll likely get around 3-5 interviews as long as the rest of your application has no blaring defects. With all the MD programs you apply to as well, you'll be dine. Just don't be a dirtbag and you'll get accepted.

You've probably already submitted, and if not, let me help you;

The best way to look at DOs schools is to look up their websites and read their mission statements. Look at their websites; does it look well organized? Does it look like you? Look up some of the faculty and read their little personal blogs. Look for research opportunities that the school has. Look at how the curriculum is structured. Look at their match lists (though this isn't the best thing to do according to some). Finally, look up where it's at. If you can't handle being in the middle of nowhere, then don't apply to a DO school in the middle of nowhere. Do you want to it to be attached to an undergraduate campus? Do you want it to stand alone?

Thats kind of how you judge DO schools. You judge them based off what you want in a school and less on "how its ranked" because DO schools don't really have rankings.

Thanks for the advice. I submitted my primary to KCOM to get the verification process started but am adding individual schools today.
