hi guys.
i am pretty new to this forum.i have completed step 1 and want to do neurology residency.i have heard from friends that clinical experience counts to getting any residency in u.s since i am interested in neurology residency i thought it would be appropriate to work in a neuro hospital for a duration of about 6 months.do they really ask about any previouss clinical experience in neurology for a neurology residency?is any research work required in the field or basic sciences or any other field if one is to be at a better position for getting a residency?please advise.i have been out of clincal touch for 8 months.will that matter?

I'm afraid I can't be of much help - as a US senior I am only peripherally aware of the extra difficulties faced by FMG/IMG applicants.

I can say that clinical experience in neurology, such as your idea of 6 months in a neuro hospital, could only be helpful. It would be a good opportunity to make contacts and get an additional letter of recommendation also.

In terms of research, don't sweat it. Your time would likely be better spent in a clinical setting.

hi msjk.
i am in a similar situation. i just have my step 1 scores right now and i'm preparing for step2. i might be able to take step 2 in june but not before that. neurology appreally appeals but is there anyway one can avoid losing this year and maybe get into a prelim or internal med or something ? wouldnt that be better than doing externship etc this year? next year we could possibly match for a categorical position in neurology. the only question is would someone take us with pending step 2ck/cs results? my step 1 scores were 98/243. what is everybody's opinion? i am an fmg with absolutely no US clinical experience.

what i thought was i would work in neurology for sometime so that it would be easier to get neuro residency.there are so many visa problems and getting an observership is not that easy for a fmg.
