Hello all,
If I agree to an offer for a position (but haven't signed a contract yet), is negotiating salary even an option?
Basically, I accepted the offer and currently waiting on them to write up a contract for me to sign.
I have no regrets accepting the offer as the job description and location is ideal but can't say that the salary is the best.

So the position listed out the salary and you verbally accepted but now want to negotiate?

You can try but if they have other people interested in the job, they may pass you over.

Your ability to negotiate is based on a few things:
How desperate each side is.
How in demand your skills are.

How reasonable is HR etc? Sometimes they may be desperate but the relationship is damaged and they don't want to interact anymore.

You really can’t negotiate until you have the initial contract…hire a healthcare contract lawyer to go over the contract and see what you are able negotiate …other than academic places where the contract is boiler plate, everyplace is negotiable.

Is it common for academic places to present non-negotiable salaries? I have a hospitalist offer from an academic shop and fear salary negotiations are going to end in a resounding 'no', though I refuse NOT to try.

If you have a BATNA you can always tell them to shove it if they tell you to shove it.

If you have signed a formal offer letter, there are limits to what you can negotiate. You have more ability to negotiate if it was a verbal agreement

Yes. Not reason not to try, but you're unlikely to get much in the way of any movement on the base salary side of things. Perhaps signing or performance/productivity bonuses.

Ours are set at the School of Medicine/Dean's Office level, so even if I wanted to pay you more, I have no leverage to do so.

Agree with above poster. Negotiate PTO, retirement benefits, admin time, productivity bonus, etc. Salary will be more difficult to negotiate on the academic side.
