i'm wondering whehter each dept is known to take a lot longer than others to complete a PhD on national average. Now there are a lot of overlap these days and every field utilizes mol bio techniques but still i wanted to kinda get a sense of the general trend, eg which field historically generally takes the longest b/c of the nature of expts, difficulty in publishing, competition, etc. Or are they all the same and there is no trend?

Differences in individual project will swamp differences in department. For example, if you want to finish your PhD quickly, don't try to make a mouse knockout for your project, no matter what the department!
