I understand that RVU-UT and Arkansas COM are accepting applicants for fall 2017. However, do you guys think it's worth applying to these schools if you are not in the region/state? I just wanted to get a feel for how regionally selective you think brand new schools are going to be.

I don't think either are public schools so there shouldn't be a ton of in state bias. That said I am guessing that 70%+ of RVU-UT will be from Utah and California.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna end up applying to RVU UT as an Idaho resident with lower stats, but I'm honestly worried I'll commit sudoku if I have to live in Utah. :S

Youre going to commit to playing a puzzle game?!

RVU in Southern Utah will be a smaller class size and from what I was told, they will be recruiting heavily from Dixie State University and Southern Utah Universities.

I think Arkansas will probably be regionally biased, but probably not the first year of matriculation. Their founding president spoke at our university and he was pretty adamite about vamping up the amount of physicians in Arkansas. However, this could hold absolutely no water in their selection process. I do know that their staff, thus far, are genuine, nice, and sharp to say the least. Go for it. Fort Smith isn't a very appealing place to live, but neither is Jonesboro or Little Rock, haha!

As a guy who likes puzzle games, playing sudoku wouldn't be a bad way to go.

LOL so basically, there's no real consensus on this?

If you ever have urges to commit suzuki, you should tell someone about it immediately. They've not been a good automobile brand for a number of years now.

My korean bias is inclined to steer you towards a Kia

no clue what you mean by sudoku lol but you do realize utah has some of the most beautiful national parks in the nation right?

*insert comment about sudoku and not anything about OPs question here*

And since I'd be a hypocrite if I just posted that without saying anything, I'll throw my two cents in. Prediction, RVU will probably have some higher stat applicants but less regional bias. Arkansas will probably be looking more towards mission fitters, and in general have lower stats for their first class than RVU-Utah. Pure speculation on my part and I have 0 experience. Just my opinion.

Edit: I don't think sudoku would be that bad of a way to go

Nope, I know what I said. 🙂

Just a word of advice: between the University of Utah, Utah State University, and Brigham Young University that Utah DO school will be extremely tough for an out of stater to get into. Basically everyone who doesn't get into the U (aka most) will likely be vying for a spot, with varying levels of commitment. Utah is the land of premeds, my friend.

Honorable Sudoku:

Performed to at least 60% accuracy. No diet cokes, touching oneself, or coffee within past 36 hours. May only be honorable after bedroom is cleaned, hyperbolized gender roles adhered to, tithing is paid, and no questions asked about Mossak Fonseca.

You should have no help of a "second" in completing sudoku. You will be disgracing yourself, your family, your children, your children's children, and the great state of Utah.

Lol.. I thought there couldn't be a bigger land of premeds than in California. I wonder why it's so huge in Utah.

So do you think ARCOM is fair game?

I didn't apply to RVU because of for-profit thing turned me off, but if the Utah campus had been around, I'd have applied. St. George is stunningly beautiful.

Exact same boat. I don't know how much I would love summer down there... Definitely beautiful though.

I always say that St. George is the Florida of Utah. It's warm and all the old people go there to die. But it's such a nice area! And RVU is, generally speaking, a fantastic school.

It's also about an hour and a half away from Vegas! I bet some of the student will take advantage of that for long weekends and post-exam shenanigans.

Not surprisingly, ARCOM is a heavy mission based school. And although they mentioned recruiting from Arkansas and the surrounding regions, I think applicants who fit the mission have a decent shot!

Have you actually emailed the schools to ask?

That's judging from the information sheet that an above user posted, it's super informative and came from the admissions office.

From Mandy, the Admissions rep:

Thank you for your interest in the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM).
There is no difference in cost for in-state and out-of-state. There will be some preference given for Arkansas students as well as those from this region as that is in line with our mission, values, and goals.
Attached you will find an information sheet with basic information for ARCOM. Additionally, please note the following:
·Each applicant that matriculates must have completed 90 hours or three-fourths of the required credits for a degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education in order to be considered for an interview.
·Students must have obtained not less than a 3.0 GPA overall and 3.2 GPA in sciences to be considered for admission unless an exception for cause is granted by the ARCOM Dean. Competition dictates that most students will have an overall GPA > 3.5 and science GPA > 3.4, respectively, which reflect greater opportunity for success with the curriculum and national board examinations. The upper division grades in the sciences are scrutinized by the faculty in making admission decisions.
·Students must have a minimum MCAT score of 500, with no individual section score less than 125.
Again, thank you for your interest in ARCOM. Please let me know if you have questions or need additional information.
