if Brown can be an Ivy League school, any school can...
EBI831 said:as someone who attends vandy i will tell you it is no way average. have you been here? do you go here? average sat scores are like 1100. vandy is way above that. and i honestly think vandy offers just as great an education as harvard and the other ivy's (the ony difference might be the guest lecturers and NIH money) . in fact i chose vandy over harvard and didn't even bother applying to many other ivies. why? because the social atmosphere at vandy is so much better than you'll find at most of the ivies....so please stop dissing my school

I know. I mean, it's got an element named after it. When will we see Harvardium on the periodic table?RokChalkJayhawk said:UCLA but not Berkeley? Wow.

It is rediculous i think, Vanderbilt?! yea great med school but just average undergrad, i think freakin temple was on there as well. They must have done this just to sell magizine's or something. If i was harvard I'd be up in arms about this crap. Although, i think there could be some additions to the ivy league status, i think they may have over done it. Anyways curious what you guys think.

"Getting an Ivy League education is overrated"
-unless you have one, how do you really know? Yes "Ivy" is really a tradition but because these schools are some of the oldest in the nation, they tend to attract the best professors and therefore have top notch academics. So, for us students that want to learn from the best of the best, the opportunity is there. That doesn't sound "overrated" to me.
"Why...people go to the expensive schools just to get a normal job like a teacher for strikes me as dumb."
-what do you mean "normal job?" being a teacher is extremely hard work and those people don't get paid enough. You are where you are today in part because of your past teachers, so perhaps you should be a bit more grateful!
"Why spend so much money and get into so much dept just to be a school teacher?"
-Some prep schools now a days will not let you teach unless you have a master's degree or even a PhD. Obviously a good education is needed to be a GOOD teacher...and perhaps you should learn to spell DEBT (read: not "dept") before posting an elitist comment. 👎

on a more serious note, it's just a story. i sincerely doubt people will stick with these new labels of "new ivies."

JDUBS: I don't mind repeating this for the fourth time (some people arent as sharp as my rich genius Ivy League peers) but Ivy League schools make up 8......8, eight, e-i-g-h-t schools out of thousands and thousands and thousands of other private schools of equal (or higher!) tuition.
I'll try to make this simple....You do not have to be rich to go to an Ivy League school. On a serious note, I really can't help but wonder why people hate...actually HATE Ivies and the people who go to them....why?! seriously...why?
I think this was the point of the article. It was simply saying that you can get an excellent education from a plethora of schools around the country--not just from the Ivies. There are a lot of great options out there for high school seniors. They aren't trying to add those schools onto the list of "official Ivies" or anything like that. How many here have actually read the article?SRK85 said:The only thing that serpearates Ivy leagues from other schools is the reputation. Most top public schools have the same cirruculm as ivies. Just ivies have richer alumni who give better endownments as well as better hookups with jobs and such.

JONATHAN: What you say is true....I actually mentioned it a few posts right above yours....what you failed to mention however, is that graduates of top schools matriculate to graduate schools at much higher rates than lower tier schools (read: national averages).....why do you think? It seems that most of you don't know....or think it's nothing more than pure bullsh**. As much of you will hate to hear or admit this, Ivy League schools have world reknown researchers, millions (or billions in some cases) of dollars in endowment, and cutting edge facilities. How many people can take Physics from a prof who's won the nobel prize? These places are institutions with amazing resources. Above all else, the largest difference between top schools and others is the student body....You can go to a state school and make the most of your education and do very well and go to a top med school or get a top job...no one denies that....BUT sitting in (and competing with in many cases) in a class filled with high school valedictorians and perfect SAT scores is nothing like you can imagine....the environment is night and day....sometimes I wish the people who constantly whine about how overrated Ivies are could come and take some classes....your attitude would change very quickly and you'd more likely than not be looking for a different career path....stop attacking people's accomplishments.....if you notice, we don't attack yours. I wish everyone best of luck and will say again that a student at ANY school can and deserves to get into med school, get a great job etc...the issue of the actual school and the experience that goes along with, however, IS very different.
Did you beat him? (Probably not, or you would have said, "...BEATING him in Mortal Kombat 3..." 😀)Quix said:My one claim to fame during that time was playing him in Mortal Kombat 3 in the Leavey Center.

TPROrgoTutor said:Who cares if the schools are termed "Ivy League" or not. Elitist attitudes are ridiculous. You went where you went, you got the education you got, deal with that. My school certainly isnt "Ivy" but ya know, I got a top rate education for my undergrad sciences and my scores show that. I hate when people are overly competitive. 👎 But I guess to each his own, if it bothers you that much it is your problem.
Which Ivy do you go to? Just curious. (Don't be shy...no one will know who you are.)mynamewastaken said:and i guess i'll say this because i do feel kinda upset what i said was taken like it was...I don't think "Ivy" means anything and I DO NOT think going to one makes anyone better....I just feel like SDN is famous for starting threads about how the schools our country deems as "better" are nothing more than baseless reputations driven only by money. Most of what I learned in college was from other students...I found them brilliant. Completely irrelevant, but I really think you will have an uphill battle trying to discredit the intelligence and credentials of the average student at a top 10 university versus a lower tier school. In general they cannot be statistically compared.
