Have you all heard about the new Post 9/11 GI Bill that has recently been approved by congress? For those of you who are academy/ROTC graduates it applies to you too. For every year of service beyond your original school payback you get a percentage of your most expensive state school tuition plus a housing and book allowance. Does anyone know if this applies to dental school? If it does, would we get the highest state undergrad tuition rate or dental school tuition rate? Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone knew anything more.

I had kept a copy of the article from the Army times. The article mentions: 1) 20% increase in benefits for active-duty and mobilized reservist. Larger retroactive increases in August 2009 once it goes into effect. 2) Eligibility for the GI bill to anyone who served on active duty for 3 months or longer since 9/11 - including people who had not signed up for the GI bill or were not eligible such as ROTC, service academy, and officers. 3) Benefits for newly eligilbe people will go in effect 1 Aug 09. 4) Tuition at $1450, living stipend at $1100, book allowance $1200 per year. 5) people who serve 10 yrs or longer could share their benefits with family members.

I don't fully understand everything in here - and I am not sure I can answer specific questions, but I will scan and email the article to anyone interested.

it can only be used for one degree, so no, it wouldn't work for dental school. there is also a cap on the dollar amount - it is a percentage, OR a certain dollar amount per credit hour, whichever is higher. i don't know what the exact numbers are off the top of my head.

I didn't see any restrictions on using it for graduate degrees. You may not be able to use it if you are also on scholarship or receiving tuition assistance through the military though. Here is more info on the new GI Bill.

unless the restriction just changed, you can only use it for a graduate degree if you did not use it for your undergrad degree. i could be wrong, but that is the way it used to be.
