Hi everyone, I will be a new applicant to the osteopathic programs for 2007. I really want to apply this term but I am worried about my numbers. My undergrad cum was 3.01 with a science gpa of 2.89. I did poorly my last year as an undergraduate and got 2 c- for ochem. I took the mcat twice: a 23, then 29 Q (B 9, PS 9, V 11). I am graduating from a m.s. program in biochem with a GPA of 3.65. I'm currently shadowing a physcian, have completed 250 hours of hospital volunteer, TAed, and several leadership positions. I guess my question is, should I apply to DO programs now or should I retake the MCAT this August while applying? Do a post-bac? I'm really lost as to what I should do.

My top choices are COMP and Touro-CA, MSU, and PCOM. If I apply right away with no changes to my stats, would I be considered competitive enough to get an interview? 😕

Sorry for the long winded message but any input would be greatly appreciated. THanks! 🙂

Hmmm, since you have MS GPA, I'm not sure if they care about your undergrad GPA. If so, your numbers are good. I think someone else will correct me on this.

Your numbers are very similar to mine. I know that the schools still cared about my undergrad GPA but the MS certainly helped along with the MCAT score. (Having really good LORs also looks good)
I didn't apply to any of the schools your interested in so I'm not sure how they they view undergrad vs grad degrees but I did get interviews at all the DO schools I did apply to.

When you go on your interviews be prepared to explain/show the schools that your new grades are a better reflexion of you.

No need to retake your MCAT. It's above the average or at for most DO schools. Start filling out your AACOMAS application NOW if you haven't already done so and submit it before the end of the month. Applying early and getting your secondary applications back early increases your chances, I should know 🙂 . You have a good chance for at least one of those schools if you get your stuff in early. Good luck :luck: .

Like what some of the others have said: APPLY early. And don't waist anytime with the secondaries. Try to get everything in by September.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm really excited to try my hand at applying. I like research but medicine is where I see myself in the future. Ultimately, I wanted to use my research background and clinical experience (from medical school *crosses fingers*) in my work. Cheers! :luck:
