New York COM (NYIT-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is the consensus to just do the 2ndary then? Has anyone called?

I never got a confirmation email from the school.. can someone please post the secondary link?

Does anybody know if NYCOM has data that shows the number of students who applied OOS vs. IS ? Are there more OOS who apply or IS ? I'm thinking OOS and also I believe that the great majority of people who get in with below the average scores are IS. I could be wrong on that

I couldn't find the numbers. IS is 70% according to the website. I would presume you are correct about the majority of applicants who have lower states are NY residents.

You mean IS 😛 70% of applicants accepted were IS last year. Also there's no matriculation data right ? I would imagine that the average MCAT will be lower for that

Here's a question to anyone at NYCOM or knows something about adcom:

I'm OOS (NJ), but I went to a NY school for undergrad, and I have 2 friends at NYCOM now, and my primary care physician who is a NYCOM alumni wrote me a LOR. Do you think these are enough connections to NY to be considered for an interview? 😕 (assuming my stats are competitive)

simply knowing someone who goes to NYCOM or going to school in NY will have no affect on your admission decision. I doubt the alumni letter will affect anything unless it's really strong. Also unless he stated that he went to NYCOM, they won't know unless they knew him personally.

No she did write NYCOM class of XXXX in the letter she wrote. She said she wrote me a good letter so I can only assume she's telling the truth. I guess we'll see

In any case just make sure that your GPA and MCAT are as high as can be. NYCOM heavily favors IS students so OOS students have to be excellent.

I would actually think your background in NY would help. I mean, I have 0 connections to NYCOM and I've never lived in NY and I'm applying so your way ahead of me at this point. Going to college in a state your applying to is a decent connection in my view, its not nearly as good as growing up in the state but not bad. You also know people at the school so your more familiar with it and can say something unique about your interest there that most people won't know, and an alumni letter definitely can't hurt.

It may help a bit but I doubt it would be a deciding factor as to whether you get an II or not.

The OOSers are going to hate me but I'll say it anyway, I think nycom should be 100% in state lol.

Don't they already give a lot of preference for in-state students. I'm OOS but I want to go there because I want to be close to my brother and my new nephew whom I haven't met yet. I just hope I will get a least an ii, even if I'm not accepted.

They gave a little more preference to OOS students this year than last. It was only 20% now it's 30%. I still would like to know if the majority of applicants who applied are OOS or IS. Also they don't invite people to complete their ii. All you need to do is to complete the primary

IDK, I was an In-state student. As a graduate however, I feel NYCOM should have no instate preference and instead should only look at those with the highest stats regardless of legal address... But thats my opinion.

too late to apply here? probably wont be complete/verified until mid september

Does anyone know what to do in this case: on my supp app I noted that I would be receiving an LOR from an MD I shadowed however he went AWOL and thus the school wont be getting a letter from him. I did however make a note that a DO would recommend me and he already sent the letter to the school. Do I just make a note of it in my supp app in the additional info section or should I email them about it? Since the MD letter wasn't required I'm guessing it won't be a big deal?

How are people answering the secondary questions? Are you guys doing bullet point or are you using complete sentences?

Anybody ?

Hey guys,

I started filling out my application early June, had a rough long summer, still havent fully submitted my primary application. Im taking Mcats first time on Aug 28th, and now Im having serious trouble concentrating on anything.

I need some assurance that my application will be looked at, and its not too late.
My counselor makes it sound like I am way too late

I personally don't think so. My friend is a 2nd year at NYCOM, and he applied around late December with a 24 MCAT. He interviewed in April, and was then waitlisted. It is possible. He was also IS with a ~3.8 sGPA with actually minimal clinical/community experiences. Its not "too late," but at the same time, the longer you wait, the more seats will fill up.

What was his cGPA ? Did he have a D.O rec?

cGPA was like a 3.88 and he did have a DO rec from a NYCOM alumni.

ahhh very good. As I stand right now I have a 3.74 cGPA and a 3.65 sGPA from a top state school as a double major. I also am IS and I have a LOR from a D.O who went to PCOM. It's pretty solid so I wonder what MCAT score I need to get to have a shot

Wow. I wish I had those GPA stats. MSU, NYCOM and CCOM are my top 3 DOs.

You can deff get in with those scores. But don't settle either. Try your best to score a 30+. I got a 27 on my 3rd retake with a 6 in verbal all 3 times. I feel like if I take it a 4th time I'm probably getting a 6 or 7. That being said I recieved a total of 9 interviewsso far. I had to cancel 5 cuz I can't afford all these plane rides lol. But Nova, Rowan and Nycom are my top 3. Good luck everyone

I had a friend who was IS, and I told her what DO schools were in November or December last cycle and suggested she apply, and she got into NYCOM in February I think. 29 MCAT, definitely no DO letter

I wish they had a range of mcat scores that were accepted. I think if you have at least a 24, you're IS, and have a high GPA, you'll probably get in or at least get an interview if you apply early

Does anyone know how to submit LORs through interfolio if you don't have a premed committee? Interfolio requires a name along with the mailing address, etc. I haven't run into anything like this with any other schools..

Is everyone just /doing/ the secondary regardless? Or have any invites to it been announced?

I got the complete email from NYITCOM after submitting the secondary with my fee, so I'm guessing just submitting is probably a good idea. It's a $86 gamble. I've made worse bets.

How long after you submitted did you receive a complete email?

Yeah that was easy, just did it. Hopefully I was "supposed" to turn it in
