I'll make this quick.

The class of 2008 will be the last class to take the paper-based exam. After next year, the test will be entirely computerized. Lucky bastards

i'll be a D1, so don't mind the stupid question... but why is the paper version better than the computer version?

it's curved, so it doesn't matter how "difficult" it is.

I don't think it is curved. I think someone already mentioned that it is graded on the difficulty of each question. Secondly, the grades will come back much faster

Like the GMAT where they essentially know your score in the first 10 questions???

It isn't curved in the traditional sense that we think of it. And, you are correct about the difficulty of questions, and that allows the ADA to toss out questions.

So are the "curves" both the same? Also, can't the c/o 2008 take a computer version if they want to???

each question is worth the same, they are not graded based on the difficulty level. the scores are curved, but not per se. your scores are given, based on how your score compares to everyone else who has taken the exam. that is why the ranges change every year. some years you might have to get 46 right in biochem/phys to pass, another year it might have been 43, another 51.... that 43 questions is then converted to another score. you have to get a 75 in each section to pass. that 75 score might mean that you got 43 questions right. the number of questions you have to get correct is usually in the upper 40's for all sections except the dental anatomy/occlusion section. it usually takes 70 or so right answers to get the passing score of 75.

the dean of academic affairs here at umkc told us that when we were the last class to be able to take the paper exam (i took it july 11).

some questions are harder than others, however, the harder questions ARE NOT worth more points than the easier questions.
