Got my official participant email @ 2:01PM
Yes, I was directed to a "participant" portal.Did your status change on the portal?
Congratulations everyone!! How many emails did you receive? I only received one email saying "new message on BHW account"
Hey guys, this is a really long thread so I apologize in advance if these questions have already been asked.
I applied to dental school last summer and am currently going to interviews. I would start in fall 2017 if I'm accepted. Did I already miss my chance to apply and have it sync with my first year? Or do I apply in the spring? Also, are you paid when you work for NHSC? Any idea how much?
Thanks!

That is the only one I received.
So we just email our financial aid advisor the award latter right? What else are we to do from here??
Received my award yesterday!
My bank account is still the sameHow do you know if you e relieved the award???
My bank account is still the same
I'm sorry to hear that some of you received decline notices despite being a finalist. I was wondering if any of you received a countersignature on your contract before getting your decline notice.I was also declined the scholarship today after being a finalist--not sure what happened :/
I emailed my Program Support Officer about this. She said that the NHSC "works directly with the University Financial Services office" to determine the amount. There is no additional paperwork that either the scholar nor the financial aid office needs to submit. We will receive an email (around the time our stipend/ ORC payment is given) that breaks down what the ORC $ is for. So basically, there's nothing we, nor our financial aid office, needs to do about it.Anyone know how the Other Reasonable Cost is calculated? Does our school tell NHSC or is it a fixed amount NHSC pays to all scholars? The packet that we are supposed to give our financial advisor does not have anything regarding ORC. Any insights?

In regards to returning out loan, have any of you guys looked into that?
This scholarship is unbelievable. It already has arrived to my school too. After taking into account all the ORC plus stipend, the financial aid office is valuing the scholarship to be worth $98,000 per year for me. I'm an out of state student at my dental school so seeing the student loans disappear is amazing!
Hey everyone! If I'm not really disadvantaged and live in an urban area, am I out of luck? I have a strong record of service and leadership.
i saw on my schools account summary that a 3rd party paid. thats how i found outWhat do you mean it has arrived to your schools? and how do you know it has?
Because I just checked my student loan servicer account online and my student loans are gone! What do you mean it has arrived to your schools? and how do you know it has?
They don't ask for a DAT score so you're good there. Last year, there were 5100 applicants and 196 were selected. You can find that number on their website... look for the 2015 scholar webinar. It's a pdf of the PowerPoint that was given to the scholars last year. Current year's scholars will have theirs on oct 4th! So we'll get some new numbers.I will be applying for this next cycle and was wondering what they typically look for in an applicant? Is it the similar GPA/DAT trend or more volunteer hours based? And also, how competitive is this scholarship? I imagine it is extremely hard to receive.
Hey that's great news! That was quick! My school is still waiting for payment. They sent the invoice about two weeks ago. When did your school send the invoice?the scholarship was already sent to my school!! now just waiting on this refund 🙂

I tried to ask them for just a dental number during the webinar last night but they said they weren't allowed to tell us. This year, there were 2280 applicants and I think 219 were selected so it wasn't as competitive this year.Is this for dental? Wow, a 3.8% acceptance rate?

That's strange- they should be transparent with their numbers.
Still a 10% rate....for every one person getting the nod, nine are being turned away.
Yeah, so about a 10% acceptance rate. And all without looking at the DAT score? Thats crazy. So its based very very heavily on volunteer/leadership I am assuming. This year there were 2280 applicants and 205 awards were made. This however includes all of the disciplines. Usually about 20% of scholars are dental students. Actual number are something like 500-600 dental applicants -> 40-50 dental scholars. These numbers are based on an NHSC webinar from past year.

I unfortunately missed the webinar. Can someone post some of the important points mentioned please?

My understanding is that the school will do it for you. You basically pay the school and they pay the school back. I do not plan on doing this until the end of the year, myself. I want to be careful not to give too much back as I think I am going to end up a little short overall and will need to borrow a little!
If your loans plus your scholarship exceeds your cost of attendance, your school will be required to return your loans as soon as confirmation of your scholarship is received.
