Hey guys, what's the dress code like at the NIH? I will be a summer intern at the NCI. Can we wear shorts, jeans, t-shirts, polos, or do we have to wear dress shirts and slacks? thanks!

Why not ask your supervisors at the NIH to be the most sure?

Slacks, wingtips, long sleeved button down shirts, glasses (non-perscription ones if your eyesight is okay), and a pocket protector. Don't forget your pocket protector.

Ah....just kidding.

suit and tie only for guys. for girls skirt suits. there are no exceptions.

HAHA, i'd ask your PI, but it's pretty lax. I wear a polo t-shirt and khakis most days, but most post-baccs wear jeans, normal college clothes. Depends on your boss tho. If you are working in a lab i believe the rules are no shorts/sandals for safety reasons. But not sure, i mostly do scanning.

Hey,

You can wear anything you want. People here wear mini-skirt, jeans, shorts even sandal...It doesn't matter what do you wear, as long as you wear a lab coat when you are doing experiement are okay

If you're working in a basic science lab, the rule of thumb is: as long as you can't get arrested in public for wearing it, it's fine to wear to work.

Im sitting at the NIH right now wearing shorts and a ratty t-shirt. It really doesn't matter unless you're giving a presentation or doing something important. You would't go wrong with a polo shirt and jeans at the very least. Just ask your PI as a formailty but once you get there you'll notice that the dress code is quiet relaxed/non-existant.

As i said, i dont work in a lab, but i just took that stupid/monotonous lab safety training and I believe "officially" (not that people do) lab workers are supposed to wear long pants/shoes, but again I might be wrong.

i used to wear nice dress shirts and what not to work last year for the first week. but they told me it's generally not a good idea cause you'd be working with chemicals and you'll only ruin your nice clothes. So...what have I been wearing since then? Khaki shorts and some raggedy t's. It was kind of awkward attending a biosensor seminar this morning considering everyone else was in a suit. but hey, whatever, it's cool. polos, shorts, sandals, whatevs.

Hi actually it all depends on your PI. Right now I work at the NIDDK and I wear jeans and a shirt everyday... sometimes I wear opened toed shoes and it's okay...
