NIH Loan Repayment Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am a first-time new application to NIA Health Disparities and I haven't heard anything. From what I can tell, none of the Health Disparities applications to non-NIMHD Institutes have been notified. I'm hoping because this is the first year the Health Disparities LRP has been open to all other NIH Institutes, their review process is a little slower while they work out kinks. Hopefully!?
My status changed to selected for my NICHD Health Disparities Renewal last Thursday and I received the financial review email over the weekend. I hope they are still sending out notifications to those folks still waiting.

I'm not sure if this is much help or not, but I was not selected for an NIMHD Health Disparities Renewal last year and applied a few times before I received my initial award. So all I can say is keep applying!

Did you change programs between applications? Health Disparities is new, correct? I had my initial (had to apply twice to get funded) under Clinical and switched to Heath Disparities for a renewal this time. I realize it might take another year, as I only have one foundation grant so far in addition to a few in-house mini-grants. Thanks and congratulations!

Before this year, all health disparities applications went to NIMHD. Just this year they opened it up to other ICs. So I did switch from NIMHD to NICHD this year, because most of my grants are from NICHD. Also when I spoke to the NIMHD LRP liaison after last year's application cycle, she said NIMHD was prioritizing new applications over renewals, so more funding went to new applications. Before my new NIMHD LRP, I had applied to the NICHD pediatrics program - both times, I was just on the funding line and the liaison said they prioritized clinical applications over other mechanisms. So I was a little nervous about selecting NICHD as an IC given their clinical focus, but NIMHD didn't seem that promising so I took a chance.

I would highly recommend reaching out to the LRP liaison at the end of this application cycle if you end up having to reapply. I haven't always gotten super specific advice on my application, but it has given me insight into what the ICs priorities are, and what they want to see in your application. Possibly the most useful advice I got last year was to find creative ways to show them all of the research that I have in the pipeline - since only published work goes into the biosketch, I tried to highlight this in my personal statement, career development plan, and research activities. I also switched up my aims so that I had one focused on long-term ongoing research, one focused on new research, and the third on submitting a grant to launch a third new line of research.

Best of luck to you, and all other applicants still waiting to hear!!

New applicant to NICHD, extramural clinical research...is it safe to assume that since I haven't had a status change by now I'm out? I submitted right around the deadline, if that matters.

Don't give up hope yet! I think a lot of IC's haven't release their results yet at least gathering from the posts here so far.

I'm not sure if the institutes request documents for financial clearance for new awards and renewal awards at the same time. I don't believe I've seen folks post about new NICHD awards, just renewals but could have missed a post. Either way, good luck! And definitely keep applying if you don't get it this year--I applied twice before my initial award was funded and I think the big difference in my application was that my second time applying, I had a decently scored R21 as PI with planned resubmission (in addition to same 2 small/internal pilot awards and Co-I on one of my mentor's R01).

thank you and congrats! no word/change to status yet for my renewal application. will hold out hope for a little longer!
Hi, just wanted to provide some data. I was notified for financial review for my NCI, 2nd renewal clinical research LRP on 5/20. Hope you hear from them soon!

I am also still waiting on NICHD new application...

I'm still waiting on new NICHD application (pediatric research)...

Hi! A few weeks later, but wondering if anyone has heard from NCATS yet? Pediatric LRP first time application
I applied for the exact same program, first time NCATS Pediatric, I still haven't heard anything either, let me know if you have

I'm waiting to hear back from NCATS clinical LRP (first time) - nothing here yet. I have my fingers crossed!

Has anyone heard from NIDDK health disparities?

Haven’t heard anything! Looking back a few years ago, it seemed NCATS notified people right on 6/1...fingers crossed!

Just to let everyone know - I just checked the LRP website just for kicks and saw my status change from "submitted" to "selected". (No E-mail yet) I know this doesn't mean I got funded yet but a step in the right direction! My IC was NCATS. Good luck everyone!

thanks for letting me know!! Just checked and mine also changed to “selected”! Fingers crossed!! (No email yet)

as told by several colleagues this means its a done deal but after reading this thread I suppose I will have to wait till I get the final confirmation email in August
thanks for letting me know!! Just checked and mine also changed to “selected”! Fingers crossed!! (No email yet)
Ah! Me too 🙂 Good luck to you-hoping this is a good sign!

It's super late here, but I just got the e-mail that my grant was selected for financial review. Just thought I'd update everyone! (IC: NCATS)

Is there any hope for a NIMHD Health Disparities renewal at this point? This is really tough...

I have a new application I was waiting to hear back... it's so hard to say. I emailed Dorothy Castille and she said it would still be a while (this was a little over a week ago). So I have a tiny bit of hope, but not much at this point.

Has anyone heard from NICHD first time award?

I haven't heard anything yet for NICHD new awards. Have you heard anything?

I submitted my documents for NIDDK financial review about two weeks ago. They said to allow 15 days for reviewing documents. I am a little nervous about having everything I needed (I had consolidated my loans after applying so the documents were a little unclear). My status/history for the documents I submitted is showing as "received." Does it change to something else once they review and approve the documentation, or do I just have to assume that unless I hear anything, I am all set?

Was your submission clinical or health disparities?

Clinical!

If it helps, I contacted LRP about submitting financial documents a few weeks ago and they indicated they would get in touch if they don't have what they need after you submit. I also submitted mine about two weeks ago and have yet to hear anything - mine also just say "received." I imagine you could call the help desk to clarify, they were very helpful!

Thank you! They emailed me yesterday and then documents in the system were marked as either "Approved" or "Received but incomplete." They did ask for something I had already uploaded, so I will upload again and cross my fingers it is what they are looking for!

Good luck everybody!

Hi, for those of you wondering about the NICHD. I received my notice for financial review earlier last week, I am a second time applicant for Pediatric Research. Good luck to everyone!

Has anyone had an active NIH LRP award while they were on parental leave? If so, any information about how you managed your LRP service verification would be super helpful. I have 1 colleague who shared that she never informed LRP program about her maternity leave because she "just forgot" and her supervisor continued to verify her research service during the 3 months she was out. Wasn't sure if this is how most people managed the situation or if there are more formal channels. Thanks in advance!

Any first time applicants to NIMH hear back on financial review yet? I saw an April posting from someone with renewal app indicating that they heard back but wondering on first time applicants.

I will say this, the LRP are pretty much hands-off once you get an award, they rely on your institution to make sure you are in compliance with your research requirement. They are pretty much by the letter of the law when it comes to the research requirement (20 hours research time per month on average).

Once you get an award they are pretty flexible. They have a formal family leave policy which I think allows you to continue to receive payments while on PAID family leave (which includes maternity and paternity leave - Award | NIH: Division of Loan Repayment, see bottom of page under family leave). You’d probably have to contact them to ask but I’d guess they would not reduce the payments either during that time (if it is a reasonable duration - I’d guess one quarter at most). But I think, if you and your mentor or advisor are pretty reasonable, you both could agree that while on maternity leave you could “theoretically” still get 20 hours a week of research done, even if it is just working on a review paper, writing a publication, data analysis at home, etc (particularly with COVID). I think it in part also depends on how long your leave is too. If it is 6 weeks of leave and you sandwich it with 6 weeks of full time research then you are meeting your requirement without having to do any research while on leave (must complete 240 hours in a quarter). If it is 3 months of leave it might be more difficult to reason this path and you might be better off talking to someone at LRP about it - again they are very reasonable and this is a very legitimate leave reason.

I submitted my financial review materials on June 1st, and on the application portal it still says "received". Is the financial document review process supposed to take this long? One of the posts here said the review materials are labeled either "approved" or "incomplete" after NIH finishes reviewing the documents. Thanks!

I submitted on 5/29 and still haven't heard anything - today marks 15 business days for me. I did call the LRP office yesterday because I was getting concerned and they weren't particularly helpful. The woman just said "I see them as received, just allow the office some more time to review the documents. You will receive an email"

Thank you for your helpful comment. Please let me know if you hear anything back from the NIH!

I submitted my financial materials on 5/15, one day after receiving the financial review request. I received an email on 6/09 that the loan documents were approved. That is 25 days after submission. Give it a bit more time. I suspect that they don't really look at them until 15 days post request anyway.

Thanks for the info! That’s good to know and makes sense.

Same here...I was starting to get worried too but since we are in the same program I think they are just a little slower than expected.

Has anyone run into feedback during loan review that certain loans are ineligible due to a co-borrower? My dad co-signed for some loans, which I thought was something different than a co-borrower, but my loan company explained that it's semantics. However, my loan company also said the the co-borrower issue should only apply to the few private loans I have, but the NIH loan review marked a few Stafford loans as being ineligible due to a co-borrower and my loan company said that doesn't make any sense.

I have not gotten this feedback, but makes me nervous as I'm still waiting for approval on my docs, one of which includes a co-signer. After seeing your question I did some research into co-signer vs. co-borrower based on LRP standards and it seems that if the person who co-signed is "jointly and severally liable" for the loan (legal terms) then they are considered to be a co-borrower by the NIH LRP. It may be useful to look at the language on your disclosure statements/promissory notes - mine says only "jointly liable." So fingers crossed this means it will qualify!

Just an update, I did get an e-mail saying that my financial forms are approved by NIH last Thursday (6/25). It was exactly 25 days after I submitted my financial forms similar to a previous post. But my loans are very straightforward - all government, consolidated, and I'm the only named borrower. I'm sure NIH will get back to you soon, I also heard that they approve some documents and request for some more if they want more information.

Yes same timeline! They approved all my federal loans but requested additional info on a private loan. Fingers crossed they get back sooner rather than later on that one and it’s not another 25 days lol

Good luck everybody!

I also received the "Received but incomplete" for a document they needed a bit more clarification. How long after did they re-review the requested docs? As we get into July I'm getting a little anxious as I haven't heard anything since re-uploading - I only heard the initial approved/received but incomplete on 6/25. Thanks!

Same here-I needed clarification on one loan, uploaded but haven't heard anything back yet, one of the incompletes just said they were still reviewing the document. This process is so nerve wracking!

Oy! Well at least we know we aren't alone. Yes, very similar! It was one document for a consolidated loan - I called and the call center isn't able to give too much info other than it was received. They suggested emailing (which I already did last week). Just going only slightly insane here.

Anyone else not able to sign into their account?
