njms 2012

Out of nowhere, Cablevision bought out the Broadstar contract at 180 west market last week. What this means for residents is that the free ~50 channels of cable has been reduced to about 20, and the upgrade to premium cable will be at least 50 bucks (compared to about ~$20 for Broadstar). Internet and phone service should be the same.

ahh...so thats why i saw all of cablevision's fleet of trucks outside 180 west market yesterday

Hey, wondering if anybody else is thinking about saving a little money and getting a 3-person suite at 180. It's a bit cheaper than the other options, the rates and layouts are listed here:

http://www.umdnj.edu/home2web/housing/rates.htm

If anyone is interested, and was planning to submit the random roommate form, want to exchange some more detailed info or meet in person (maybe at this event people are talking about on this thread or the summer luncheon)? It seems like a little better way to find a good fit than the roommate form.

Same goes for University Centre and Society Hill multi-bedroom suites too.. I haven't decided yet but am leaning towards 180 lately because of the proximity and concentration of other med students.

Hello everyone. I'm new to this thread. I got my acceptance phone call on the New Year- Dec 31st to be exact (celebration!).

I've been reading a lot about housing options on this thread. FYI, according to Admissions there will be a "Housing Day/student luncheon" on Friday, June 6th.

It sounds like most people are interested in living on-campus and have even filled out your housing forms? (!!??) Admissions told me that I don't need to worry about housing until housing day, where I can learn more about my options and meet potential dorm/house mates...

A little bit about me... I'm from out of state and have been living and working in NYC for almost 2 years now. Any other out of state and/or non-trads out there? Any others still considering living off-campus?

Am very psyched about starting school again and can't wait to meet everyone. Also, I'd love to meet up with people in the area before August.

welcome to the thread!

I;m out of state too (from NY... so not too far hehe) but I go to school right now in jersey for undergrad...

and yes, i have submitted my housing form... I requested a 1 bedroom or a suite, but from what people have been saying, i doubt i will get one... but i'm definitely living at 180 for my first year.

For the out of staters out there:

Are you applying for nj residency to get in state tuition?

Yes, I'm applying for NJ residency. You need proof of an address (like a bill or a copy of the lease/renter's agreement), a drivers license, and proof that you are a registered voter. I believe you need all of this one month before matriculation. Hope this is helpful.

hey guys, i dont know about you, but i really do not want to move into the apartments at 180, i was thinking seomwehre in jersey city would be ideal , next to the path, or around bloomfield area if need be, or even in society hill, right next to campus. if anyone knows anyone renting some apartments at society hill, or if anyone knows of anything of the above, let me know .. thanks

Hey guys, do we absolutely need to have the titers done before registration? I dont have health insurance anymore and I don't know how I am going to be able to get these expensive tests done. Everything else is good to go as far as my physical, tb shot and immunizations...but the titers have me really worried. Is anyone else in the same boat? 😕

I don't know if you're still in school but if you are try your health center. I got all my stuff done there and it only cost me $55.

I know there is a discussion about it on the previous pages but can someone quickly sum up what has to be done for financial aid? I did my fafsa and I don't know what has to be done from there.

anya, I originally applied out of state and changed my residency mid way through the application process. I had to get a NJ drivers license but it was pretty easy.

yes you absolute need the QUANtitative titers for Hep B Ab rather than QUALItative values....they wont accept the latter....many ppl got screwed last year cuz they only got the nominal values of the Hep B Ab.

Just so know you....these are IgG Abs and not IgM

Thanks, I know that they need to be done...but do they need to be done BEFORE we get there? I am really stressing!

yeah...u need to be immunization compliant before orientation, otherwise you wont be able to matriculate

try to call health services...i know when i needed the TDap shot for my masters, no1 would give it to me. i called them and they suggested the doctors downstairs from them to help out...try that, theyre really nice

I'm in the same position. I wonder how much all this is going to cost me 🙁

Please tell me these people got a chance to go back and fix this. Also, is there a faster way to get mail into the admissions office. It seems to take them 2-3 weeks to receive information.

People could most definitely fix the titer situation after they started school. No one gets kicked out because they don't have all their paperwork ready on the first day. Plus, one of the HepB tests that they want is so rarely used that many doctors don't know of it nor do they ever order it. I think that the student health insurance may start as of August 1 so if you make sure you get enrolled right away, you could always have the testing done at the start of August, plenty of time before classes start. And if you have to do it during the first week, no big deal...student health may make a lot of noise about it, but in the end, it all works out. You could also call them and explain your situation too...Good luck, congrats!

PS - Concerning the housing situation...180 West Market isn't terrible. The rooms are decent, it's quiet, commute is great, and even if you share a room (be it with an MD, dental, or graduate student), everyone is studious and does their work. Society Hill is dicey...it's right there near school, but it isn't patrolled like school. Students have gotten mugged there, on more than one occasion. And University Centre...ugh, for all intents and purposes, it's an UNDERGRAD dorm. And I heard from someone who lives there now that they will be making people share bedrooms next year. No thanks... 🙂

of course they will let u fix your Hep B titers if u didnt get it...they give plenty of time...you get screwed if you hafta pay for it if the insurance company doesnt cover it

PS: as the above person mentioned, try getting it through the student health office...it maybe cheaper or free. Regardless of the cost, its only a one time thing, you wont have to do it again because the antibodies are lifelong. In addition, first year students are your best source of advice, too bad they have a terrible exam week coming up.

Ok, I am hearing two different responses here. ASDIC, you said that it needs to be done prior to classes starting. Now NJMSgirl is confusing me! I called them and they said that the titers need to be done before classes start, particularly anatomy...But if the student health insurance kicks in August 1st then that should leave a little more than a week before classes, and that makes sense to me. By the way, thanks to all the people who are responding with information, I really appreciate it! Good luck to all the first years with their exams, too.

I called LabCorp and with the 4 titers that need to be done, they told me at least $381.00 (I went to my student health office at my university, and they said the school will not cover these tests. Were you guys referring to NJMS student health services?). In a nutshell, this sucks, but it sounds like it wont keep me from coming to medical school if I wait until health insurance kicks in.

bellacnella, contact Dr. Winthrop Dillaway (if you can't find his email PM me) and explain your situation. He's the director of Student Health and he can tell you the best thing to do, or possibly grant a waiver until school starts and you are covered under school insurance.

He was my interviewer, and a really nice guy. I had an issue with my PPD test and he was very reasonable about coming up with a solution. Good luck.

i am not a slacker dude. i am just waiting until everything clears before officially joining the group. don't want to jinx myself by joining now and then find out later i could not matriculate because of financial aid or did not get a health clearance or something like that. i know its silly but to each his own, right?

Don't freak out too much about the vaccines guys. I am officially compliant as of this week, 8 months after my matriculation here. I had my first Hep B vaccine after we started classes. Wait until the first week of school. They will have a list of 60 or 70 non-compliant students that are missing one thing or another.

I recommend talking to one of the nurses at NJMS health services. They are real cool, and they will get you straightened out. Just make an appointment for next time you are in the area or the first week of school.

Ok, I did not get a response to my email, but I will wait it out to see if my new (temporary ) job will pay for it, or wait until the first week of school..I dunno I think it will all work out.

hey guys...if anyone knows/is interested in living elsewhere (i.e. jersey city) please let me know..i've been lookin for housing but it seems a bit difficult...please let me know email me [email protected] thanks

if anyone is looking to move out anytime soon, i found a really good apartment in Jersey City by the river, and a few blocks from the Grove St. Path station. Perfect for a PATH commute to newark for school. 1400 for 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, and UTILITIES INCLUDED IN THE RENT (cable/tv, internet, gas, water, garbage). Please contact me ASAP at [email protected]. This is a great deal for the area, and will go very quickly.

I got accepted back in November, but I still never received anything about housing... When did you guys receive the housing contract?

And is anyone else out of state??

And did anyone else apply to a dual degree program? (specifically MD/MPH). I still haven't heard anything regarding the MPH...

and congrats to everyone on getting accepted! I cant wait to meet you all 🙂

Anya, it looks like we may have a lot in common 🙂 I'm thinking about applying to the MD/MPH program... Are you still considering and have you received anything yet?

Is attendance required for all lectures? And is anyone going with their parents to the meet and greet on Saturday?

Attendance is not required. My parents are coming in from out of town this weekend so I'm probably going to drop them off and hang out at a friends apartment or the library all morning.

hello all and congrats to those who are accepted!

i spoke with dr. heinrich recently and he informed me that orientation begins august 11th and the white coat ceremony will be held on august 14th!

i couldn't find this info anywhere on this thread so i thought i would post it.

take care drs.

I am also interested in the MD/MPH program so I called the admissions office and was given the phone number to Rhonda Barnes, the School of Public Health's administrative coordinator. You have to get an application through them (not the public health central application service). They request your med school application from NJMS and all they need from you (beside a filled out application which they send to you) is official transcripts. Since you were already accepted to NJMS that is your primary school. This means even if you're accepted by the SPH's admissions commitee the ultimate decision rests upon NJMS admissions.

You can find Ms. Barnes' info here. Hope this helps and good luck!

i know that my parents are going, but I'll be off to AC for the night...i spoke with the ladies in the admissions office early last week, and they said that the parents day is not for the students, if anyone was interested

oh yea and attendance is definitely not required for lectures, but small group attendance and TBL (team based learnings) are required. I took our MGM class (medical biochem "molecular and genetics medicine") last semester with the '11 students and it's definitely not required for the lectures

Hey guys,

Congrats on coming to NJMS! I'm currently a 1st year, soon to be 2nd year (if all goes well 🙄 ). Just wanted to say if you have any questions about school, procedure, books, housing (I live off campus, but know many in the dorms and UC), non-trad issues, whatever, feel free to PM me, and I'll be happy to help you out in any way I can.

See you all in August!

Hi there,

I'm a current 1st year, and now that our horrible exam week is over I have 5 minutes to rub together and can address your question. I was in the exact situation that you were in last year (no insurance before school started). I didn't get my 3rd hep-b shot nor the titers done until after school started. They will send you annoying "you are non-compliant" letters, but as long as you are going to student health, its all good. Just ignore them (but don't ignore taking care of getting it done).

They don't pay for it, and its not covered under student insurance (the reasoning they gave me was that although it is required for attendance, its not a "medical necessity"). However, it was *much* cheaper than having it done at my doctor's office. Come to think of it, I can't remember if they ever sent me a bill for it in the end, but if they did it couldn't have been that outrageous because I don't remember it!

So don't stress. Just communicate with student health, and they'll hook you up!

Hey everybody!!

I have been MIA for quite some time now. lol. Anyhow, hope all is going well with you guys. For those graduating seniors...CONGRATS!!! I know I absolutely cannot wait to hear my name being called on that day. I am getting so sick of college! So right now I have been working on a massive senior thesis and I am getting really really nervous about it....but hey....whatever. As long as I graduate.

So...I have been quite nervous about this whole process. I mean I have sent in almost everything except Housing and my Health Forms (which will be hand delivered...don't want to risk it). As for the Hep B issue...I guess I am not the only one id deep water. I will just turn in what I have (apparently I still need to do the 3rd one).

Also, am I late if I apply to for Housing tommorow (4/11)? I mean I needed a bit of time to gather the deposit fee so I sure hope it isn't too late. The cost of Housing at 180 W. is a KILLER!!! 😱 I mean you would think they'd have mercy on us considering the fact that we are already selling our souls off to medicine....geeeeesh🙁 Am I the only one who feels this way???

If you're going to hand deliver your health forms, you might as well also get your Hep B titer at the same time...if your still in school, you're most likely covered under your parents insurance. See if they can do anything for you with that.

I agree...and the money we had to send them doesn't even go towards anything--it is only so they can process the application..$150 is a lot right now!!..lol

The lady I spoke to at the Office of housing (who called me to tell me to send another check cause they lost the first one) said there's a big waiting list for singles and that I won't be able to get one. Pretty surprising, I had thought that 180 was empty and they were struggling to fill it up.

Available June 1
-Bedroom is carpeted with 1 large window and a spacious closet.

Room 2: $550

my mom comes back form parent's day and verbally massacres 180 west market. LOL

@NJMED....Thats weird because my mom actually LOVEd 180th. I do believe it was the cool tunnel-like link between the school and the apartment that really got her. It just felt so safe (well except the parking lot). I am definitely going to live there, at least for the first year.

Hey you guys...can we name 180 West Market???? I really cant get over constantly having to write the whole thing out. 😀 I mean I live in a builiding called University Square....which can be easily dumbed down to u-sq. So...anyone of you have some cool suggestions???
