No interviews yet....anyone in the same boat?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In the 2010-2011 cycle, I applied to 20 schools. I was a cali resident with mediocre numbers: 3.4 cum gpa/ 3.4 sci gpa/ 32 MCAT. Had no interview invitations until late December. Ended up interviewing at 6 more schools from January all the way to April (granted none of them were from cali schools). Got accepted to 2 schools off the waitlist (first one in May and the second late June).

Prepare to reapply, but don't lose hope so easily.

furthermore, LizzyM is great and all...but no one knows how each individual school operates. Be judicious about what you should believe when reading these forums.

My numbers are a teensy bit lower than yours (though I like to think my ECs make up for it). I got one interview last year. This cycle, I raised my MCAT, gained research and shadowing experience, and took a semester of post-bacc classes, in which I received a 3.9+. This cycle, all I have received is three rejections and one hold. I understand I'm nobody's top choice, but it seems like this cycle will pass without so much as an interview.

I am almost exactly in the same position. 3.5 cGPA & 3.4 sGPA with a 31 MCAT. No interview invites yet. I know there is still a possibility of getting an II, just being cautiously optimistic. I had a question about how this waitlist business works. Schools have to have all their interviews done by May 15, correct? But you can be waitlisted and accepted after May 15?

The reason I ask is because I'm in the midst of planning a big trip to Europe and I want to leave in mid-May but I'm confused as to whether schools still conduct interviews after May 15. Is there a chance that I'll get an interview invite while I'm in London? Thanks! 🙂

I don't think any schools interview into May. Only a few will still be conducted interview in April. Most will finish their interviews in March.

Which means interview invites are gone in, say, February?

It seems there are quite many deserving MD candidates, based on MCAT and GPA, we can increase the number of MD seats by 50%. There were, in 2010, more than 25,000 students with MCAT score greater than 29. It seems people with score of 27 get accepted. It seems we need more doctors to make the health care affordable, and provide health care to under served areas.

And where will all these new graduates do their residency? As it is, there has been a recent increase in the number of seats for medical students with no corresponding increase in the number of residency spots. With your proposal, match day will be a nightmare.

That sounds reasonable. It seems to me that most invites come about a month before the actual interview, but of course there is variation among the schools. And I assume they will try to fill all interview spots, even if someone drops out with relatively short notice.

Well you have to increase residency spots as well.

I sent a status check email to one of my schools today and got a reply that my status had been switched to "process invite." They said I'll be receiving an email next week to schedule my interview!!

Do NOT give up hope! Good luck to all.

Wait, so did you initiative get them to actually read your file? Or was it probably going to happen anyway?

This depressing thread refuses to die 🙁 Another week with no news and I am dying a little more inside.

The way the email read, it was going to happen anyway: The committee updated my status to "invite for interview"; but the admissions office had not yet processed my invitation. There's always a bit of a lag between decisions to interview and the actual invitation. The respondent probably just wanted me to have an awesome Thanksgiving and some well-deserved comfort in knowing that I'd be receiving an interview invite within the week (still waiting on the official email to schedule my date). 🙂

Haha, awesome! Congrats on the interview, and good luck!

Lol I recieved my first post-interview rejection this weekend and today was the day I finally came to grips with the possibility of reapplying. I definitely understand the feeling. keep hopeful and remember that there's so much you can do to strengthen your app. You've come so far, and regardless of what happens you have learned a lot from the entire experience.

Anyone (with or without interviews) else check their e-mail 20x a day?

I can't help myself. I need...to check...e-mail...

I get e-mail withdrawals...it's worse than crack. I would know...:scared:

I had one interview in early November and I'm waitlisted. 🙁 I really hope for a few more interviews. No one cares about the 3.8 SMP GPA, I guess 🙁🙁🙁

As somebody who's applying to SMPs... could you tell me a little more about your situation? Undergrad GPA, MCAT, which SMP, ECs? I really like what I've read so far.

Smart-phones with push-email makes things a little easier 🙄

Here's to hoping December brings in some invites 🙂

There are tons of primary care residencies that go out empty every single year and some are usually taken by FMGs. Best bet is that you'll just have an increase of candidates in those primary care residencies.

Woke up to my 4th rejection 🙁

I'm at 13 post-secondary rejections.

But I did apply to 46 schools. •__•

i'm even stunned you guys have tha tmany rejections. i've only heard from 4/23 schools that i applied to. the rest are all just "reviewing" me or "rereviewing" me... really? i was complete at most of them late aug-sept, so you'd think i might've heard even some rejections, but no. just silence...

Holy sh** thats alot of secondaries and alot of moolah. Im at 13 if you include post-secondary holds but i applied to half the amount of schools you did...

Haha yes it was a lot of $$$ indeed. I figured it'll better my odds. I sort of went "all in" with my poker chips this application cycle.

👍 Except with the lack of emails, I want to think that something's amiss with the cloud!

I just got an email saying that out of 3 options (interview, hold for interview, or no interview possible), I just got placed in the hold pile. Looks like I'm movin' on up!

haha i feel like i have some extreme reaches too... but maybe they're like let's string her along and crush her later.

Ok, so I originally told myself if I didn't get any IIs by January, I'd officially start worrying and prepping for next cycle... But if I don't get any in the next couple of weeks or the end of the semester, I'll be pretty bummed...

Same. After rejection #5 today I've started thinking about how to fill the year off. The worst part is that everyone told me all you gotta do to get somewhere in is have good stats and solid ECs. Apparently it's not nearly as simple as that. Sorry to be depressing, but none of my non-premed friends understand and my pre-med friends are getting interviews, so I'm venting here.

SDN: helping you through the suicidal ideation as you apply to medical school...or exacerbating it...

Haha, it is getting pretty awkward talking to some of my other premed friends. "So how's the Interview process going for you, Vectre? I just had an interview at Wash U!!" (They have lower stats than I do, comparable ECs)

I've been responding with "Playing the waiting game at this point!" pretty much all semester.

Thanksgiving, which normally is the best holiday of the year (fact), was terrible just because of that. Everyone I knew asked me how it was going and I basically had to respond the same as you. As for the premed kids, its getting bad because I almost don't want to hang around the guys who are in already because they just inadvertently kind of rub it in your face. Or maybe I'm just oversensitive right now. Probably. Definitely.

amen to both of these responses, haha =\

Vent away. I have friends who are themselves surprised that they have interviews while I don't, since my stats and ECs are more well-rounded. So I guess it's not as simple ...

Luckily, I'm not constantly surrounded by pre-meds since I already graduated. If I were still in school, it's be a lot tougher.

+1. Having already graduated helps a decent amount since all my friends at home know nothing about the med school process. If I were still at school still I'd probably be crawling up the walls.

I'm still in school and a ton of my fellow classmates have already been accepted.

I, on the other hand, only scored an interview with my alma mater (did a lot of work with their med school) and have been waitlisted. as my stats are way subpar to their averages. No other interviews coming up 🙁

Is there anything that we could be doing to swing things our way? My parents have been nagging me to do call/send emails since I "should have gotten in by now." But I don't really know what to say if I do that. Something like, "Hey guys, soooo I was wondering if you had an extra interview you could throw my way."

I'm in the exact same position. My parents ask me everyday if I've gotten an interview yet. I understand their curiosity, but it starts to f*** with your head after a while. I'm actually in the process of writing update emails to the schools just to give them a heads up on what I've been doing lately. Hopefully it'll spark something. I think an update email is a good way to remind them you're still there...just make sure you have enough things to update them with!

Man, I'm impressed you are still sane. If my parents nagged me everyday (they don't care), I would have lost my mind a long time ago...:scared:
