Hey guys Im going to be applying this upcoming cycle and found out that a my school (just transfered here) there is no pre-medical commitee or any service that gathers LOR and send them out. Im pretty sure most schools will not accept LOR sent from students so anyone that has had experience with a situation like this id appreciate some insight. thanks

Be thankful there's no pre-med committee. 😉 Check w/ your career services office and see if they can help you out--mine did. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you can just have each professor send their letter individually to each school.

Try Interfolio/ReferenceNow

http://www.referencenow.com/
http://www.interfolio.com/

It's an online filing service and it's not too expensive. I haven't actually used it yet, but I plan to (I don't have a pre-med committee or access to a filing service at my school either). It might be a little bit of a hassle if you're applying to a lot of schools and your profs have to send out individual letters. By having them send it to ReferenceNow, they only have to send it once--and you can send multiple LORs (and other important academic documents) together in the same shipment.

I used Interfolio.com and it worked out great. It gives you precise control over when your letters go out and which letters are included in your packet. Cost is minimal too.

I chose not to deal with the pre-med committee at my school as they were rude and unhelpful. From what I've read on here, it seems that most other pre-med committees are the same way. I just had my professors send the letters out, but I didn't apply to a lot of schools.

My school just recently formed a premed committee and I missed the deadline to get the committee letter written for me. So, I panicked and asked around if I was SOL or not. Turns out not. I individually solicited professors and supervisors to write them, provided them addresses, and the profs sent them out to the 11 schools that I ended up submitting secondaries to. A couple of them expected me to provide them with pre-addressed and stamped envelopes.

Now that the secondary part is all said and done, I'd have to say that I wasn't hurt by not having a committee letter. I interviewed at just over half the schools I sent secondaries and have been accepted to at least two programs.

There is a rumor that if there's a committee and you don't use it, you may be asked why not. I've never actually been asked this question, but I suppose that it could have played a role in my not getting more invites. I dunno.

And see how nicely things have turned out for DianaLynne? See, no one needs a premed committee. It's such a useless job that was added to the entire bureaucratic structure of the med school machine!

On second thought: the composite letter is such a help. One letter received and you're complete. I'm sure DianaLynne has stories of watching each letter trickle in, and wondering when on earth she'd be complete.

On a side note: Diana, you tall fox, you!

My school doesn't have a committee.

My advisor told me because of this, what they recommend you doing is that you get 2 science professors, and a nonscience professor, and in some cases schools want a character letter or 2 so have one or 2 of those.

I agree with everyone else. The only thing I want to add is starting asking for those letters early. Some professors will just keep putting it off, and if you get the impression they actually don't want to write you a letter, go ask someone else.

use 3 references from school professors and one from a physician

have them send these references directly to the schools
