The theme dictates what we call the "flavor" of the game. When someone is voted out or killed overnight, there's a writeup basically explaining what happened. Or there may be actions at night that have game-related flavor.
As an example, last year's noob game theme was 2000s music. The blocker, who could prevent others from performing their night actions, was "Everybody" by the Backstreet Boys. When you were blocked you'd be notified you couldn't perform your action because you were dancing to your favorite song.
All of this will make much more sense once you're actually playing the game lol
