Northwestern Waitlist Thread

So has their class size dropped below what its supposed to be yet? I wonder if there is room for movement and they're just waiting to take people.

If any of you cats have specific questions I can bring up with the admissions department, I'd be glad to stroll over there and ask them. I assure you they are not stringing people along. It's just a matter of opening up spots as they come available.

Thanks for the offer! I would be interested in how they think the waitlist movement is shaping up. Has there been a lot of people who withdrew, and so a decent amount of spots open? I guess is this gonna be one of those years where they accept 2 off the waitlist or 50?

I'm sure other people on here will have better questions

im not sure if mdapps is a good measure or not, but there are a lot of people that withdrew from there. I was sitting in this boring lecture a couple of days ago and counted 8 out of 34 people were going to NU. Thats about 24%. The number of acceptances was 312, so the number of people who would be going at that percentage would be 74. Leaving about 36 spots i think. Not sure how representative mdapps is tho.

It was a three and a half hour long lecture, so I had a lot of time hahahaha

36 spots??? No, if your sampling is correct, there would be more....aren't there 170 spots in the class? And, of those, probably 10 MSTP's and this year there were supposed to be less HPME's.....I would say around 40-50 (with 50 stretching it) spots....which bodes very well for us waitlistees....but who knows.......Last year, people started coming off the MD waitlist before May 15th...so maybe there won't be much movement....oh well, hopefully somebody gets in soon!

I thought it was 170 at first too, but then realized that includes the HPME kids and some other special people. I got the 110 number from Lizzy M's previous post:

"Last year ~50 matriculants came from the waitlist (out of about 110 students who were admitted through the regular admissions process, not MD/PhD or BA/MD). In other years it has been 2 or 3."

Yeah, I noticed people had already gotten off earlier than May15th last year, but things may be delayed with the way you said they were accepting people this year (ie..the geographic stuff). If that region thing is true, they will need to figure out where they are missing the most people from etc, to even everything out. Eh, I hope I get in.

let's all quietly chant "fifty, fifty, fifty, fifty...." 😛

I really hope the people who want it most get in....

I know for a fact that there will be at least one waitlist spot freeing up at Northwestern.

I gave up my seat at NU yesterday.

I think he's saying that there are less HPMEs this year, leading to 120 or so free spots rather than 110. I heard that the HPME class that started at Northwestern undergrad in the fall of 02 was especially big, and that they're getting smaller.

i can confirm this. there were around 60 hpme/premed scholars (hpme equivalent) last year...so they purposely tried to cut down cause it was such a large number. itll be closer to 40-50 this year.

yeah but it doesnt it take three years for that to matter. are we talking about acceptances or when they actually start at feinberg?

i don't know exactly how it works...but i know for a fact that there are a "normal" number of hpmes this year (40-50) and there were 60 last year in the entering FEINBERG class. Hope that lifts everyones spirits 🙂.

definitely good news! i wonder how many NUPSP people they accepted this year, but it cant be twenty!

NUPSP? do you mean premed scholars? i think they dont except more than 2-4. but i was including that in my 40-50.

No, it means that the people who graduated HS in 2003 and were accepted into HPME combined with the people who got in through the premed. scholars program at NU undergrad), all of whom are in the Feinberg Class of 2010, number about 40-50, as opposed to 60 such people in the Feinberg Class of 2009 (2002 HS graduates + premed. scholars, who are 2001 HS grads).

Point is, there may well be 120 spots for regular MD applicants this year, as opposed to only 110 last year. This may be partially why they accepted more this year than last, in addition to the fact that there were so many drops. We should all be thankful that NU didn't move up in the rankings.

I get the feeling that HPME is being phased out, or at least marginalized...perhaps LizzyM can confirm this?

Hate to say this, but this is not looking good--NU doesn't seem to have any movement, and there's no indication there's going to be any anytime soon. Anyone else think this implies that very few will come off the list?

Nah, I dont think its a big deal yet. Like I said before, it sounds like they are trying to profile the incoming class and they will fill the holes with what is missing from the waitlist....probably takes a little bit longer than how they used to do it.

Keep the faith. It seems like a very real possibility that the school is going to sit tight for a while before offering up waitlist spots. I've been in contact with the school, and I was told by several higher-ups that they don't plan to look at the waitlist for a while yet.

I talked to anadmissions counselor about this, and while they are not phasing out the program, they are decreasing future HPME class sizes. I'm not sure though when this gradual reduction in HPME size will take place.

Many of the clinicians gripe about the program, due to the relative immaturity (not in a perjorative sense) of the HPME students, but the program is wildly popular on the undergrad campus as the students it attracts have ludicrous stats.

One of my good friends is an HPME, and he occasionally does interviews for the candidates. He interviewed one last year that not only had a 1600 sat, but had won awards for her research work (the intel prize?) and had her name on a couple of patents. They can't phase the program out when it attracts amazing candidates like her.

I think the med school has been trying to balance them out with students who have post-college work experience of some sort to up the "life experience" factor among the students. I'd estimate ~1/3 of our class had at least a year of work under their belt when they matriculated at NU.

hey alternates, i'm one of you so i thought i'd join ya. good luck to everyone! northwestern is my top choice so i'm hoping it comes through. if it doesn't i've got one other waitlist, otherwise i'm reapplying 😡. from my interview day, i felt like the dumbest one there, i was very impressed with the other applicants, do i have a shot with 3.56/33?

I did notice that a lot of the other interviewees had already graduated when I was there.

stay positive! without knowing all the rest of your app, it's impossible to say. I'm sure you realize that those numbers are below their averages, but they wouldn't have invited you for an interview if they didn't think you were academically capable! you're in the same boat as the rest of us now - sitting and waiting. 😳

Dont worry about the averages. Your MCAT is pretty much there anyways. Obviously people have to be accepted below and above the average, so one point isnt that far off.

thanks, that makes me feel a little better

this may be a stupid question: if you don't get in off the waitlist, do they send you a rejection or do you just wait around until like september and assume that you've been rejected? wasn't sure...

Okay, so I know this is going to cause a slew of replies, BUT.......I got in!!!! 😱 Dean Brown called me this afternoon while I was watching Oprah. I'm sooo excited!!! 😀

Whaaaa? Details!!! What did you do, how many letters did you send, how frequently did you call? Give us your age, sex, race, location, and a brief snapshot of your academic record.

What did she say? When (Central Standard Time) did she call? How long did she give you to reply?

And why were you watching Oprah?

LOL. Okay, let's see if I can answer all your questions. I wrote one letter, but in it I was able to tell her that I had a paper published in the time since I interviewed. I called once a week, beginning in March. I'm 26, female, my race doesn't matter I think (or does it?), I'm an international student, but I live in Baltimore. I have the basic academics >3.7 BCPM and overall GPA, volunteering, I've worked at Hopkins doing Ped Onc research shince I've graduated (which is where the paper came from), member of some honor societies, Dean's List etc.
She called from blocked number at 4:39 PM, 3:39 CST. She jsut said " we want you at Northwestern". Then she gave me time to freak out. She laughed the whole time. Then she asked what school I'd chosen to go to and politely implied that NW was better (it is). She wants a decision by the end of the holiday, so I'm thinking Tues/Wed.
And I was watching Oprah because she was touring the Auschwitz concentration camp with the author of 'Night'. I can't remember his name...

Elie Wiesel is his name but I am not sure of the spelling. Must have been a good oprah show.

Oh I'm sorry 😳 . It wasn't my intention to make anyone feel bad. I just wanted you all to know that the line is moving.

She left me a message today around 4 so I assume I got in too! The list is definitely moving!

Thanks, and congrats! Sorry for the interrogation, but it was necessary! 🙂

First off...congrats to keedz and wildcat05.....that's really awesome and we are all jealous!!! I really hope some more of us get off.....when I called today, the lady told me that the waitlist should see movement in the "next few weeks"....and she checked my status and "nothing has changed". Oh boy....

No, no, it's totally your right to be ecstatic. If I get in, I'll be super pumped.

So are both of you planning on going to NU? Seems like it would make sense for her to call everyone in one day....

i got a voicemail from dean brown too...but missed it. i hope that means i got in.

Not so fast - waitlist movement very often stretches out for up to a month. But I'm also just telling myself that so I don't lose hope 😳

Congrats man...you are def in...she wouldn't have called you otherwise. Damn...like half the people who regularly post on this thread got called by Dean Brown today....think about those who don't post....maybe she called enough people today to fill up open spots? Damn...I am am STRESSED OUT! 😕

like many others have said - congrats, but my heart just sank a little. but really, congrats to keedz and wildcat and luhando!

Keep hope .. I remember when the waitlist to my top choice started moving and I hadn't heard anything. My heart sank too, but two days later, BAM!, the phone call came.

I'm actually not positive anymore. I got into pritzker today too! I will definitely decide within the next several days!

Holy cow. Congrats man!

Oh, and Pritzker is waaaaay cooler. I hear they're better with financial aid too. No way you want to go to stupid old Feinberg...you'd rather give your spot to one of us losers, right? 😉

haha thats an awesome day!

I was just wondering where those who got in were from (undergrad)...just in case that whole region thing is true
