I'm a fellow. Board certified. Studied 13 hours a day for 6 months to pass orals boards. Doing a fellowship. Applying for jobs EVERYWHERE. Every single job on acr website I send in my cv. Last job I applied to had 74 people send in a cv. You have a better chance of getting into Harvard med school than getting a job now. I cold call 2 hrs per day.

2 years of fellowship is becoming the minimum to get a job. That's 7 years!!!!!! Starting pay is at or slightly above primary care. $180k.


Do your homework. Google acr jobs. pick a job and email contact. Politely ask how many people have applied.

We are planning to recruit two radiologists, one starting next July and the other next October. We are not advertising for these jobs on ACR website.
For one we are looking at the applications now and for the other we will start in Nov.

You can PM me. I cannot guarantee a job or an interview, but I can have the people in my group look at your application. We are in a very competitive desirable market and the group gives some of the better offers.

Find job you like and politely ask how many people have sent in CVs. 75- 100 applicants is the norm.

Check out the screen names of all the naysayers. Click screen name and investigate their posts. Cow me and tco are big time radiology promoters.

Last year, there were tons of fellows freaking their balls off in September about not having a job. I remember one user, nibbler, who posted weekly freak outs. What happened? They all had interviews by march, and jobs by June. Look at recent posts, not even ONE post from a jobless person on auntminnie in the last two months.

Were they all great jobs? Probably not, I'm sure some had to settle. But to say that you can't find a job in Alaska for 180k is a blatant troll man. Gimme a freaking break

Those posters are routinely deleted by aunt minnie admins. Aunt minnie has a major major vested interest in getting clicks. If radiology turns into pathology (which it is) they lose big time advertising revenue. The truth cannot be supressed forever.

It really comes down to: can you outbid and beat 75 radiology fellows and get a job? If so apply to radiology. Right now its "how low will you go."

I will work for as low as $ 100k, 60 hours a week so I am confident I will eventually get a job. Just warning all the med students. This is what they are up against.

Srradresident, way back when the market was good, I did not commit to job until Feb and did not start interviewing until Oct. Maybe most jobs being advertised are for non fellows right now? We had several openings in the last year and both were filled by experienced rads known by other rads in our group.

Think cold calling is very low yield. But calling residency alums, friends from med school in rad, talking to attendings is much higher yield. You may get a lead and that is all it takes just one. Seems like in this market, advertised jobs are probably not great jobs or part of policy but already taken VA/academics.

It is very bad out there right now to come out of training after all these years, debt, sacrifice. And OP is right no one care about you. There are experienced rads circling like vulturesmfor work out there. There is a contraction of volume and massive oversupply of rads on top of reimbursement reductions. And radiology is a nice field, but without good opportunities it is worthless. It may get worse as affordable care act goes into full swing and reimbursements drop further. 2 more years of training in IM and you could get a well payimg job where you want to live. Or do a 2nd fellowship and go through the same struggle next year as market gets more congested in all likelihood, Guess you can cold call group and offer yourself for 100k for 60 hours of work? But judging by how the groups are that Imhave worked with are, this may not work.

Certainly only a fool would make career choice bases on an anonymous forum. But when you start seeing posts like this you should at least investigate and see if there is at least some truth to what OP is saying. Maybe email a group like OP said and see what kind of competition there is for a spot in Wyoming. Or talk to the Rad. department chairman who can tell you what it is like for academic radiology. Of course, in 7 years conditions may be different but in the last 15 years we have had 2 very bad markets with the current one showing no signs of ending. Will you be able to tolerate such a market with huge loans when you get out? Or is it better to go into something with a more consistent job market that always has jobs in most locales like IM.

I should know- I have 2 Fellowships, 2 CAQ's, 20 years of experience- no lawsuits, Level 2 CCTA, cutting edge interventional Neuroradiology experience, MSK, 18,000 echocardiograms, MQSA, nuclear cardiology, carotid stents, all known interventional radiology experience, excellent references.... NO JOBS !!!
Considering hiring a bunch of Family Practice PA's or NP's and going back into General Practice, and get some of that Obama Care money ??
Then self refer my FP patients back to the hospital for MRI's etc...
Make my OWN JOB !!!!!!!
