how do you get into loma linda if you have nothing to do with Seventh Day Adventists? They said you need strong ties to Christian principles. So, if you've never been to church, can you forget about applying there?

thanks

I would forget about it simply because it wont be an atmosphere that a non-Christian will enjoy. 7th day Adventists live a very strict life - Vegetarian, non-drinking, dancing, card playing, etc. Women are supposed to stay at home, men earn the living; you know, all the familiar archaic Christian traditions.

I do not know if this is current info for this application cycle, but you used to have to sign a statement on your Loma Linda secondary pledging that you will not smoke, will not do drugs, will not have sex, and will attend youth group regularly. I am actually not joking about this!

Are 7th day adventists all vegetarian? I didn't realize that.

I got into Loma Linda, and what racystacy said is true for the most part - without the negative connotations. As a physician, smoking and drinking is something you shouldn't do much of anyways, just for your health in general. And sex (esp. without protection) is just as big a gamble.

You are required to attend "chapel services" every Wednesday morning, which are non-denominational so that anyone who went in would feel comfortable worshiping in whichever way they pleased.

I have heard from students there that they do whatever they want off campus - hypocritical or not - and sign the contract. No one does bed checks or anything like that. For me, it was not that big of a deal because I don't do any of that crap anyways. I should also mention that I'm Christian 😉

Loma Linda is a great school and blows every other CA school out of the water when it comes to clinical skills testing. I believe they are one Standard Deviation above every other CA school in that respect. Also, my friend, who is Muslim, got into LLU with no problem. They are more interested in people who live their lives in a respectful, Christian-like manner and who are spiritual beings.

Wow no on campus nookie?

Well, if you go up to the administration and say "I got a piece of a$$ last night," then yeah

Does this school take international Student from Canada? If so, do they admit lots of them?

also, would Christians have priority over non-believer when apllying?

if you want to stay in california, and you already agree to their views and requirements, its a great school.
you dont have to be religious, but you do need to be open minded about them to even have a chance at an interview.

Loma Linda is the school you can't drink or smoke while attending??????

not all SDA are vegetarian. We just don't eat the food that bible says it is unclean. Lot of SDA choose to be vegetarian but not all SDA.

Alright guys, listen up! I have a friend who currently goes there, MS II. He is not a Seventh Day Adventist, vegetarian nor a non-drinker or smoker. He got in, he is, however, as he puts it, the exception to the rule. He is hispanic and from New York, so you do the math. He got lucky, but got accepted. He also smokes, drinks, and gambles. Oh yeah, and he recently took a semester off to travel to south america.

So, if you dont believe me, then dont apply and maybe you will loose your chance. He likes it there, and no one treats him any differently. And, oh yeah, he loves to eat meat!

I applied there for this cycle...and I am not Christian. However, I did attend an SDA boarding school my 10th grade year in h.s. Is it a good idea to mention to them that I am not Chrisitan? I def follow their priniciples, as far as no smoking, or no drinking. Also, I received their secondary...do they screen?

I would not recommend going to a school that has differenct values than your own. I went to a really liberal undergrad and then did my post-bac at Loyola (Jesuit University) and although it wasn't horribly uncomfortable, I didn't love it. I used to lead my ug pro-choice group, at Loyola there was only a huge group of pro-lifers. No one was rude, but I never felt like I really fit in there. Most of the post-bacs weren't Catholic or Jesuit either so it was fine for my year, but I didn't apply to their med school. Apply to schools where you think you will fit in, you'll be happier in the long run! 🙂

Yeah, wassup, I'm seventh-day adventist. There are wwwwaayyyyyyyyy too many misconceptions about this religion. First off, my parents are carribean, I've been eating curry chicken since I popped out. Yes, the entity of seventh-day adventism does advocate no meat, but it definetly isn't a rule. You won't find it on campus, but you can just go to a fast food place off campus. I did a summer program there and its a very nice campus with a very strong program. No you don't have to be a 7th day adventist or even a christian to go, but you must have values that come in line with what the bible teaches. I don't drink or smoke not because I'm a seventh-day adventist, but because I'm a biology major and I know what that stuff is doing to my body. Its crazy to see all our future doctors doing the most unhealthy things. I chuckle every time I'm outside the hospital and see doctors taking a quick smoke before they head in to treat someone; its even funnier when its a lung cancer patient. NO, you don't have to be a christian, but one day you're going to have to live healthier or end up like most of patients you'll be treating. I'm seventh day adventist; i eat meat, I dance to reggae, and if I was good at it, i'd play cards. Not all of us are like that. Its a good school, but if yall can't handle their health principles, you probably shouldn't be doctors anyway.

It's a free country, so of course you can dance, eat meat, and play cards (if you were any good 🙂 ) I just want to warn any non-7th day adventist that many of their lifestyle choices may be heavily frowned upon (including the three things mentioned earlier), and any deviation from accepted standards at a religious school may cause one to be ostracized from the group. And misunderstandings between Adventists and non-members are sure to happen; its an entirely different culture.
I'm speaking from experience here when I say that living in a religious environment and choosing not to participate in the religion is not a positive experience, and should be avoided if at all possible. Good luck to those who choose to apply 👍

 That's what they want you to think. They spend a lot of time and effort trying to conceal or downplay their sexist and racist past (and, to a lesser extent, their sexist and racist present). But Mormons are often so nice and polite, with large, smiling families, that it's easy to overlook the church's policies.

I remember this one beer slogan at the Utah olympix:

Why have just one?

--Polygamy Beer

In honesty, I find it amazing how only a few generations ago, a freakish outcast named J.Smith led people to believe that he found a new bible with brandnew principles, ie. 100 wives for him. Look at them now. It speaks to the power of preserverence. Imagine what David Koresh woulda been without any meddling from Janet Reno. Have u heard of a cult called the Moonies? Google it. Rev. Moon has met US senators regularly. you'll be surprised that youve prob used one of their products.

Random tangent, i find it even more amazing that just one generation ago, blacks in america had separate bathrooms n stuff. how much have things really changed (at least in detroit, philly, etc)

What's the definition of dance at Loma Linda? I'm a ballet dancer. So are the anti-ballet, or just no dancing at nightclubs.
