Not enough spots this year in AOA match?

I heard from a med ed dept. (so take with a grain of salt, maybe?) that there have been about 300 applications this year for AOA EM programs. Looking at last years match results, there were only 220-ish spots available.. Does this mean what I think it means?.. 😡

Keep in mind that many of those people also applied to MD residency programs, and may choose to do that match instead of the DO one. The sky is not falling.

The DO match is hard to make much sense of anyway. From the one "Charting outcomes in the DO match" that's been published (with data from 2009), 173 of 178 people who matched into EM, did so to their #1. At the time, there were only 202 residency spots available, but 212 people applied, and only 178 matched. 84% match rate.

It is almost a certainty that quite a few people will pull out of the DO match and go for MD. I wouldn't worry too much over it.
