Nova Southeastern University to Open College of Allopathic Medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do schools that have both MD and DO programs have completely separate ADCOMs, office of admissions, etc. for each program?

I believe so.

Take for example Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and College of Human Medicine (MD).

I spoke with the dean of the MD side and he said they have absolutely no affiliation with the DO program.

Okay, good. This is the way it should be. As long as this is the case at NSU, I don't think it should be an issue.

On the other side, collaboration might be an interesting path for these schools to take. KCU (KCUMB) is having research collaborations with Kansas University Medical Center (SOM) and University of Missouri Kansas City.

I believe NSU already has a strong research foundation, which leads me to believe that they were able to be seriously considered.

Sure, I don't see a problem with that. I was just thinking that it might be a little odd if you have a school saying you need to understand the DO philosophy, have exposure to the field, etc. (everything DO schools want), then just go ahead and accept MD students as well. But I think you avoid this from happening if the two programs are completely separate.

Oh I agree. Having it as one school but two separate programs would be sort of odd.

What? Are they doing it at a different campus at least? Thats strange.

It says this is part of the Vision 2020 plan so I wonder exactly when they'd have this up and running. It says they'll have engineering ready by 2016.

Rowan also has both MD and DO. Completely separate entities.

There's Nova and then there's NOVA COM. Nova COM emphasizes DO philosophy. Nova (MD) can emphasize whatever they want to. Nova itself does not emphasize the DO philosophy. It's a university with 100s of colleges and degrees to offer. Nova has Law, pharm, nursing, etc. The MD school doesn't have to obey the philosophies of the DO school...despit them being under the same university.

I just wish they'd at least have the same access to rotations or something... You know the MD school will probably get a nice new teaching hospital while the DO students have to run around Miami.
Apparently NSUCOM is getting a teaching hospital though - I'm not sure when. I hope these new plans to open an allo school don't change that.

The MD school is not going to be on the same campus as the DO. It's going to be in North Miami beach... ~30miles away.

No it won't. the building for the teaching hospital is already almost done

I was under the impression that the curriculum for the COM and CHM is almost identical (-OMM) and that they sit side by side in the same classrooms.

Sounds pretty affiliated to me.

This is great. The folks who are serious about DO will apply to the DO program and those serious about MD will apply MD. Those who want to apply to both can do both.

USA! USA! USA!

Not sure if srs, but you do have a good point. I'm going to be a doctor thanks to this wonderful, pluralistic, carve-your-own-way nation of ours. If I had grown up in Europe,
- where they determine at age 12 whether you're college material or not, and where your chances of getting in to med school are based solely on your performance on a high school-exit exam- I never would have had a chance. Non-traditional student isn't really a thing there.

Used to be true. Now they take completely separate classes.

I'm content then. More DO schools need big teaching hospitals.
I think I read somewhere that the hospital would only be around 200 beds, which seems pretty small...

Yah, sounds like a very community hospital. But that's probably adequate for a lot of rotations admittedly.

I believe they are increasing their class size to 270 for the 2016 entering class.

Jesus. I personally don't believe any medical school should have more than 150 seats per class. But what can ya do lol

I thought they would change the DO program to MD, but never thought they would open another med school... Do med school bring that much revenue?

med school is usually a net loser....

They would have to cut their class size for that.

The only reason why I see any university seeking to open an MD school alongside a DO school is strictly for the biomedical research growth that will occur with having such a school there.

Many articles claim that the inaugural class of 50 students will be admitted in Fall 2017, which is pretty interesting considering that LCME does not even have them in applicant status.

If it's true though, I will gladly be applying there!

"The new NSU program, slated to accept its first 50 students in 2017, plans to serve about 125 students within its first four years. It will be housed at the old Southeastern University of the Health Sciences at 1750 NE 167th St, North Miami Beach, not the main campus in Davie."

"NSU's growth plans also include a 215,000-square foot Center for Collaborative Research, which is scheduled to open next year."

The CCR is literally next door to the Health Professions Division building in Davie where the Osteopathic school is located, just FYI. The hospital is also going to be built in Davie.

is that a cooler place? i've never been to florida

I'll be amazed if they have a med school up and running in time to accept students for 2017...that'd mean being completely ready for applicants less than a year from now. Unless they plan on pulling something similar to California Northstate...

It's more like 15 miles south of NSU main campus in Davie where all of the health programs are located. I think whoever said that it's 30 miles, is confusing North Miami Beach with North Beach of Miami Beach. Although, it would be nicer if it was indeed on the North Beach, there is most definitely no difference in temperature between any of the places.

lol sorry i meant cooler as in "is there more things to do for young people?"

not really its just a normal town. if you were talking about north beach then yes (above south beach) but not north miami beach.

You'd need a car to drive to Ft Lauderdale or Miami in either case. I'd give an edge to North Miami Beach as its a closer drive to both Miami and the ocean. You probably wouldn't want to live in north miami beach itself as the area is rather sketchy.

I wonder if they will actually be taking students in for next cycle

Any idea as to whether that 2017 mark is for matriculation or admissions? Like, are we able to apply to the allopathic school come June?

The dean told me 2 years ago they make 25 million dollars a year off the Med students (nova is a fairly expensive school). Dr Hanbury is all about adding this MD school. $$$$$$$$$$
