Had few No pass' (NP) here and there.
I know that it won't count towards my GPA, but how will the med schools think of them?
Don't have any excuse for them, I failed the course but was too late/couldn't withdraw.

What do you mean they won't count towards your GPA? Don't they count as a "0" in the calculation? I'm pretty sure GPAs are calculated based on credits attempted, not credits earned.

Why wouldn't med schools view them as the "F" that they are? Why is this even in doubt?

Sounds like an F that will count in your GPA to me.
Am I missing something? Failing a pass/np didn't affect GPA at my school.

If you’re talking about P/NP, as in classes taken for credit/no credit with no grade given, then it won’t count towards your GPA. How they’re seen to adcoms is a whole different story, and I have no idea. Maybe @Goro can chime in on that.

My bad! I thought it's the same as pass/fail - apparently it isn't, so I have no idea how med school adcoms would look at it, but I'd be surprised if they didn't treat it as an "F."

It's not what your school says, but what AMCAS or AACOMAS say.
Was responding to the implication that they would count in the school's GPA, which was the basis of the first quote. I did not know you were talking about the AMCAS calculation.

You make it seem so nonchalant that you have a few NP lol. Thank god I didn't have that mentality or you would see the number 0 next to that A in my signature

I had 3 Fs and was pretty nonchalant about it since there wasn’t much I could do to change it.

I’m not sure what your point is here. Should the OP be posting like they’re freaking out or something?

My point is that I was being sarcastic. But if you want a serious answer:

I'm not sure if the OP was misinformed or what the case may be. However, I'm almost confident that NP do count in your GPA. I don't think he understands that given his OP. And as far as how medical schools view them, I would guess like an F but maybe not as severe since its either P vs NP not A vs B vs C vs D vs F. Either way I don't think having 3 NP on a transcript is something to brush off, but I've heard of people getting into medical school with worse records (like a DUI)

Pass/Fail classes don't count towards your GPA.

"Most courses with the AMCAS Course Type listed below are not included in AMCAS GPA calculations. Instead, the total hours for each of these categories are reported to medical schools under the heading Supplemental Hours.
° Pass/Fail–Pass
° Pass/Fail–Fail
° Advanced Placement (AP) Credit
° College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
° Other Test Credit"

Well if you squint your eyes the NP looks like a F which AMCAS may register as 0. It all depends though on if the AMCAS computer system has eyes, and if those eyes can squint. You are also relying on the fact that those eyes would be squinting the moment OP's primary was verified.

I agree here. Screeners will see three NPs...that will be problematic.

Agreed, insofar as a Pass doesn't count as an A, B, or C in AMCAS GPA calculation. It's hard to believe, however, that a No Pass (or Fail) is counted the same as a Withdraw, although I suppose anything is possible!! 🙂

It does appear, however, that it does not count as a "0" in the GPA calculation.

I had one of those listed on my transcript. It will not count as an F in AMCAS/AACOMAS, and it will not be factored into GPA calculation. It just needs to be marked as pass/fail during transcript entry.
