what about leaving the state during MS4 year? is it possible? I would think that one would need to go and rotate at places they would like to gain residencies at- right? thanks in advance.

Yes. As you can see from where students obtain residency positions (Yale, Johns Hopkins), they rotate at those hospitals during their MS4 year.

So, if NSU 4th yr students can rotate anywhere .. is it possible to rotate at AL (say at UASOM)?? I know AL isnt DO friendly, how would it be possible to set that up?
 
I just realized that there are no third year electives! Is this standard? Since you need to know what you would like to do before 4th year, how are you supposed to check specialties out, as 3rd year is all primary care?

What I'm trying to understand is this:
Three IM?
Two FM?
Two PEDS?
Two GEN SURG?

Is it usual or necessary to have this many of the same specialty? If we just did one of each, that would free up 5 months of electives for the third year to see what else is out there. I would learn the more in depth stuff if I chose to actually go into one of these specialties. Isn't that just overkill? Or do you need this much intensity to lay the basic groundwork you will need for medicine in general, regardless of which specialty you choose? Internal medicine makes sense in this regard, but not the others.

I may end up wanting to be the most ruraliest of primary care physicians, but exploring as many options as possible and interested in would be quite nice.

Im wondering if two of those IM are subspecialties? I can't seem to find everything I'm looking for in the catalog. What are the rural selectives? What are you doing?

i just tried to find that info real quick, but couldnt. i'd look harder but I have to pack for my early evening flight to Vegas😀
 
It seems fairly standard for most 3rd years. Though DMU does give you a little elective time in 3rd year.

Yes. You would have to coordinate that with the hospitals there. There is a bunch of calling, paperwork, and what not that is involved. However, if you want to do it, it can be done. You may not get your first choice, but it has and can be done.

Your post is filled with the naivete of a pre-med; and that's OK at this point. Third year is the same at just about every medical school: you rotate through the core specialties, being internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry, pediatrics, ob/gyn, and family medicine. A solid foundation in these areas is essential for becoming a physician. Fourth year is for electives in sub-specialties. What you probably don't understand is that if you want to be a cardiologist for example, you don't apply to a cardiology residency--you apply to an internal medicine program. You can still do a 4th year elective (anywhere in the country) in cardiology and that will help you in applying for an internal medicine position at that program. After you complete the typically 4 year internal medicine residency, you then apply for a cardiology fellowship.

That said, students at NSU are assigned to a wide variety of rotations depending on your core campus (be it Broward General or Mount Sinai, etc.). I know of some students who have worked with nephrologists or pulmonologists for one of their internal medicine months. For surgery some have been with plastic, cardiothoracic, and hand surgeons. It is all random in these assignments, but no matter where you are assigned you will still be expect to learn everything about that particular core specialty.

Hey everyone -

Could anyone tell me about the IGC preceptorship? Are they assigned for you or do you get to pick?

I saw that the 2006-2007 schedule indicated that for IGC preceptorships, there are X and Y groups with various numbers afterwards. Is an X2 group different from an X3 group or is there only an X and Y group?

IGC is like where you shadow docs .there are only 2 groups X and Y..you get to choose between family med, internal med, peds...Or you can do something called COM2Serve...this is where you go to various places to shadow..so u get to work with different docs..not the same one every other week. Also for COM2Serve health fairs and various camps count as credit..so its more flexible..the only downside of Com2serve is that some places are really far away..like 1.5 hrs away..i did the regular IGC..and i thought it was alright.
 
Did anyone receive any sort of notification or information after they put their deposit down? I mean I know they got it because they didn't waste much time depositing it.

even though they said you would not, I did receive one in the mail.

Yes. I got a "bill," but it just noted that I had a credit from my deposit. You can also check on it if you have you NSU ID.
 
Has anyone had problems with NOVA's mail correspondance? I was accepted last month, and I just got my interview packet a few days ago! I STILL haven't received my acceptance packet yet, even though I was told it was mailed to me on Dec 19! I had to call their admissions staff to fax me a copy of the acceptance letter! 😱 😱

So incase the acceptance packet doesn't make its way here, what do I do for housing and fin aid?

Well, unless you're interested in the military scholarships, you don't need the acceptance package for information about housing or financial aid. If you think you're eligible for financial aid, fill out a FAFSA. Housing is on you. You're responsible for finding your own. The NOVA website can help you out on this. The acceptance package does have the website that allows you to set up your email though, but you can do that on your own through the website if you have your NSU ID number. It's the same number that your application was filed as.

I just got mine last week. There isn't any information about financial aid or housing in it, but there are important deadlines for the deposits in the acceptance letterand a form you must turn in to hold you seat in the class .
 
I'm doing my undergrad in Boca....just 30 miles from NSU...I'm going to make an appointment with the financial aid office so I can figure out what to do....I'm totally lost in this process! PM me if you want to know what they advise!

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to let me sit in on a MSI and/or MSII class during my revisit to NSU on January 26th. I will be setting up some appointments in the afternoon with financial aid and stopping by the program office. Please let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks in advance.

WOW! Looks like you guys have been busy! I just took the last 20 mins or so reading the last 6 pages of posts...Welcome to all the people that got accepted! I just came back from my loooong and sweet trip to Pakistan.... Hope all you guys are doing well. I had a question about the c/o 20011 listserve... i got a letter from nova with instructions on how to open an email account...which i just did about 0.5 hr ago...but it didnt say anything about emailing anyone to add myself in the class listserve..... can someone please give me instructions on how to go about adding myself to the listserve? Thanks!!!

Oh yeh, and any south asian/muslim girls looking for roommates...PLEASEEE PM me....

No problem! I've already started looking for apartments and condos and I plan to have a couple of roommates. I've made appointments to check out places when I'm down in Florida next week.

I know that many people have complained about NSU's below par administrative skills, but they seem to provide you more information than other schools do. I know that some schools that don't provide their student with an email address. At least with NSU, you get an email and ID so you can access information on webct. You have access to course sign-up, financial aid information, and can see your account balance. I'll be checking that when I put in my second deposit.

I will tell UNE after my trip to NSU.

Honestly, I don't mind sharing notes. Hopefully, our class will work as a coherent unit. I'd rather have a competent colleague in the future than otherwise. I don't want to leave anyone behind.

I'd sleep in too if it wasn't for the the 80% required attendance in certain classes. Blah! 😛 Besides, I retain more information when I'm in class. Good times!

From what I've heard, that's not needed. I'd rather fix you up with a spycam to go along with your Chippendale's outfit.
