NSU-COM class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I dunno about most of you but I am starting to get a little excited and anxious about getting geared up for school.

Right now I am looking into Uhauls and moving expenses...man its going to be around 500 bucks no matter what on that...at least is cheaper than the 2-3K for a full mover.

Also, I am bleech about having to drop my nonexistant funds into credit land as I need to pay my security fees, first months rent, cable bill and electric bill all without having financial aid yet. YEEEHAW....

does anyone else wish there was supplimental to the application process of hey there potential student you will most likely blow more than a few grand on just the application process and acceptance way before you actually have your first orientation....seriously though...its amazing what you never thought about as expenses which are quickly building up at least for me....

now, I am packing a little each day and hopefully by the beginning of june I will be good to go....hopefully.... 😀

Oh and did everyone get a chance to register? I was going to blow it off for a while until they said no financial aid would be distrubted until you were full registered....I quickly did it yesterday. Look at these classes...it going to be a interesting ride!

21469 FME5105 Basic Life Support & First Aid
21470 IDC5112 Clinical Practicum I
21471 ANA5218 Gross Anatomy
21472 IDC5211 IGC Preceptorship I
21473 BCH5113 Medical Biochemistry I
21474 PHS5123 Medical Physiology I
21475 ANA5114 Medical Histology
21476 OPP5112 Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine I
21477 IDC5505 Ethnocultural Medicine

Yeah, I'm starting to get excited too. Unfortunately, I still have 5 1/2 more weeks of work before I leave (not that I'm counting or anything...). I registered for classes yesterday and that really made this whole process suddenly very real, so now I'm kind of nervous too!

I agree with you that this process is insanely expensive and I have gone into some pretty significant debt paying for it. I'm hoping to throw some of that loan money at the credit card bills as soon as we get it.

Less than 8 weeks until orientation starts!! 😀

that's the quickest 15g's that i've ever spent... 1 minute of copying and pasting numbers and then clicking register.

ya definitely scary...

we arent supposed to register for anything else besides those course numbers that they gave us are we?

ps

robz...did u find any other moving van companies that were cheaper than uhaul? i check teh price for uhauling from NJ n the price was in the thousands....talk about burning a hole in my wallet, its insane
aalok

yeah prices were insane but here is a nice info on how to move...

http://vtvt.essortment.com/rentmovingtruc_ouv.htm

So far though uhaul is the cheapest moving company to deal with for me..from knoxville to Ft lauderdale is something like 400-550 depending on the truck size....I don't want all the fancy s**t that comes on top of it ..well maybe some pads.

there were a few other companies that did the driving for you I found...I'm a guy...and my dad is helping so...were gonna pull the manly man thing and do it ourselves. but here are a few of those links...(I didn't use them though)

http://www.upack.com/

http://www.123movers.com/

here are some of the cheap truck rental places too...

http://www.yellowtruck.com/

http://www.uhaul.com/

http://www.pensketruckrental.com/ (fairly expensive for me though)

I hope this helps a little...uhaul seemed to be the best price for me and the most likely way I will go next month.

Nope....I figure they will tell us in orientation on any extra preclerkship rotations or community service electives that might be around this fall...

You only have to register for the course numbers that they gave you. I think you guys are going to get to do the Basic Life Support course during orientation so it will be good to get that done and not have to worry about it during the year. The IGC Preceptorship I class is the one where you are assigned to shadow a physician. Don't buy any books unless you get a crazy deal (even then, if you are not a book person, I would hold off) - the M2s will tell you what you need to buy during orientation. Enjoy the time you have left; see you soon!

NSUCOM Class of 2007

About books and deals, I know a lot of M2s will be selling off most of the books that you will need at a good price, except anatomy - people tend to hold on to those.

does anyone know when our financial aid info will be available? I tried calling but got the machine as usual...thanks! 🙂

info or distribution?

I have had my infor for a while....but not awarded yet.

I talked to a fellow 2008 student today that was awarded yesterday.....then again her name started with a d and mine is a Z.....so I may be near the end of the pack!

ROBZ thanks for all of the moving info. It is a big help. I am having to move a lot of furniture from Charlotte, NC down to Fort Lauderdale. Not looking forward to the move but can't wait to start classes.

Hey DocMiddy,

Are you from Covington or Newport or Ft Thomas? I am from Cincinnati and turned down UC for NSUCOM. PM me if you have any questions.

Doogie

I'm from Edgewood, Kentucky. I will save your aim sn and IM you if I have any questions.

Good to know, someone else is down there from the Greater Cincinnati area.

Thanks,

Chris 😀

Let's not kid anyone, both DocMiddy and Robz will give up the 2 grand and forget the roomate. If I'm pulled off the alternate list, I will cough up my deposit elswhere. Seriously, 2 g over a lifetime is pennies to be near family and friends.

It's a harder decision for me than that. I really like everything about NSUCOM and the only thing that would persuade me to go to UC if offered, would be proximity of family and friends (esp. girlfriend). I think after waying the options though, I would stick with NSUCOM.

I am also anxiously awaiting moving down to Florida. Unfortunately for me, my apartment won't be ready for me to move into until July 12th. So I have a little more time here to make money and pack. I have also been getting my things together and packing up boxes. My moving expenses are outrageous. It will probably cost me with gas almost 1500 dollars to move down (that's a medium size truck and car trailer from uhaul). I don't know how we are expected to be able to come up with all of this money for moving and initial living expenses. I heard that there was some kind of emergency loan that we could get, but now it seems to be false info. Regardless, I can't wait to get down there and chill for a few weeks before orientation starts. I don't care what anyone says, I'm going to see the beach plenty this year....even if I'm "book in hand" every time.

Peace.

Chris 👍

im with yah on that one

Hey Robz,

what do you mean you've had your info for a while? What info should we have? I feel like could be missing something very important (like the key to a $50,000 loan). Maybe I'm just getting overly paranoid... 🙄

Webstar says I'm in good standing for financial aid, but nothing shows up if I go in to look at the awards.

Thanks for your help!!

If I get pulled off the alternate list; wow a tankful and I'm on campus!

Yeah...anything I can do to help..I figure if I got to do the work I might as well share the experience cause someone else was probably as lost as I was.....I'm doing the move from Knoxville to Plantation for 480 and that includes extra pads and dolly.....not a bad price for me at all!

I know you have been accepted for a while and I bet we have the same info. What I was talking about was the financial aid sent me a letter oh about janunary saying what I needed to do to. See...I forgot to do the entrance exam for sallie mae and some other application form. I realized this in april when I called financial aid and they told em they needed those.

I have called them a few times and the insisted that I will hear in June. I heard of another girl (she told me on IM) that was awared the beginning of this week. I am hoping that I will be soon.

webstar says I am good to go for financial aid too....just no award yet. I'll give them till next week sometime ....then I'll call.

so...still no financial aid award for me today....

ah..who needs money anyway. :scared:

I did find a brand new hobby at work today that has been keeping me busy....its called lets try and think of a store that is not around the Ft. Lauderdale area! So far almost every store I have looked for is fairly close, save one or two. It also lets me know where I should drive for groceries, walmart, sam's club, costco, super target, and other stores of that nature cause I don't really know a lot about the area.... its a fun time...and a complete waste of my work time here....ahhhh but its worth it for me!

i am considering applying to nsucom. i was wondering if there are any scholarships available (other than military) or is the financial aid strictly in the form of loans?

Hi everyone!
I talked to Cindy from fin. aid, and she said first year students will be able to access our fin. aid awards on webstar in three weeks. On another note, when I was first applying to nsucom I talked to someone about scholarships offered here and they said most of them are only available for second years and above except for outside sources like the national service corp or military...anyways hope thats helpful

Hey I finally made it to the the promissed land. I got myself an appartment, and I moved in, a few days a go ( good think I have some family in here that helped me move in easily)
I am trying to plan my day but I do not know anybody yet. If anyone is in town and wants to hang out, or anyone knows any cool places to go ( clubs, beach with free parking) or things like that, please let me know. (the parking close to the beach is freaking expensive here, compare to the west coast florida ex St. Pete beach)
See ya all shortly,

Lorenc

Ps: If anyone has any questions related to the appartment or anything like that please let me know and I will try to help you.

Some fun things you might what to check out are sawgrass mills mall, Las Olas Drive shops, and generally drive around the area trying to figure out where stuff is around your apartment (I don't know which one your in).

I know the first couple of days I am around I am going to get aquainted with my surrounding area. I'm moving in less than 4 weeks so it will be soon!

I have the following books for sale:

Like New Condition: (Retail Price from Barnes and Nobles in Parenthesis)
1)"Wheater's Functional Histology", 4th Edition, B. Young ($63)
2)"Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials", 6th Edition, John West ($35)
3)"Renal Physiology", 5th Edition, Arthur Vander ($35)

Used:
4)"Grant's Dissector", 12th Edition ($42)

These are all very helpful books for surviving the first year at NSU!

Asking Prices:

The first book is for sale for $50 and the rest are all $25 each. I would be willing to sell all for $100 if one person would like to purchase all of the books.

I would get these books to you during your orientation period in the first week of August. These are all books that will be suggested to you to buy from other students for Histology Lab, Physiology, and Anatomy Lab. If you have any questions about the books or are intersted in buying the books, send me a PM or reply to the post. Good luck with moving down to Fort Lauderdale and your first year! 👍 👍

Today's Robz is bored at work post is brought to you by the letter Z and the number 23.

Actually, I was reading NSU's website and was wondering about the "proposed" new athletic facility that I was told about when I asked about workout facilities....well I found an answer.

Here is a link to a description of the new university center which they say should be done by 2005. Of course there is a construction project here at UT that should have been done in 2003....but alas they are still working on it. Lets hope it doesn't go down that route.

Anyway, here is the link let me know what you guys think about it cause it sounds kinda cool to me...as it should for 55-85 million dollars.

Yeah, I think that's right. I can't think of anything else that it woudl be.

MUHAHAHAHAHAH no joke...less than 5 minutes ago I opened my mail...and said the exact same thing! I guess thats it. My question now is...is it suppose to be your name...or the name of the party that is coming for your ceremony?

whats the deal on health insurance? i got the email for the waiver,, but i'm wondering if when we will get the info for those ppl who do need it

We had the same question last year; I guess that thing needs to come with instructions or something. 😛 After the M, you write either a R or Iss or Rs---if you are a Mr., a Miss, or a Mrs. Then, you write your name. About the insurance, they are changing it this year so I am not exactly sure. We were told that our class should receive the info in the next few days, but I am not sure if you guys will get it too or not. If not, I will let you know what it says. I think that if you do nothing then the school automatically gives you insurance and you are billed for it. If you go with someone else though, then you just have to sign a waiver to have the fee removed from your bill. Apparently, the school's insurance is through Chickering. Below is the website for the waiver; it gives a little bit of info. I will let you guys know if I find out anything. See you guys soon.

Rob rant for the day....

a) I can't believe this thread almost went to the second page! Common people!

b) I can't believe how unhelpful financial aid is.... (actually no ..I can believe it)

So, today I called financial aid cause I want to see why I haven't been awarded yet. I turned in my application MONTHS ago.

The lady seemed like I was a bother and could really care less to help me. Oh wait...she did take my social and look on webstar just to tell me I haven't been awarded. Thanks...not like I did that 5 minutes before calling you. GEESH.

I wouldn't be nearly as paranoid except I have had issues with financial aid in the past and I don't quite trust any of them...any school..any time.

So, I being as cheery as possible asked when time frame would be...the response...well if you turned in your forms early it could take longer than the 4-6 weeks to get awarded. WTF????? I thought everyone was screaming to get your crap in ASAP....geesh. I know others have already been awarded too. Kinda irks me especially when I had to ask a second time for a time frame and she repeated the same answer....so I said..."I guess there is no time frame if I am understanding you correctly?" Response - "nut uh" (meaning no)

🙄

So, I have to wait for this process to get though whatever freaking hoops it needs to get through....I am sure the school wants their money sometime.

What gets me is that my apartment complex wants a copy of my award budget to finalize my lease. I hope these jokers get the act cleaned up in a few weeks and this post was all for naught.

ok...I'm ending my rant now....and looking at the beach cam I posted the link to on like the 15th page of this thread 🙂

I turned everything in early and didnt get officially awareded until July if I remember right. Look on the unofficial website at old threads. A lot of the same issues you guys are having, we had and have discussed on the site. I was freaking out about fin aid too but apparently, this is not out of the ordinary. Just make sure that you have all of the forms filled out. A lot of people last year were pissed b/c they werent awarded yet and it turned out that they didnt fill out some random form. You can go ahead and get your private loans if you are going to do that, at least then you know you have some cash available. As long as you have done everything, you will get your federal loans, it just takes time. About having to have the fin aid for your apartment, I had the school write up something saying that I was accepted as a full time medical student and because of this, I was eligible to apply for X amount of dollars in loans and that I have applied and the loans are being processed and CedarKey was good with that. If you have issues with it, pm me and I will go to the CedarKey office and get a copy of what I gave them last year. Enjoy your summer. See you guys soon.

I posted this already, but i just wanted to say it again. I talked to Cindy from financial aid. She said first years will find out their awards in three weeks ...a little less cause that was a few days ago.

thanks kimi I must have missed that but I still think its kinda funny you told me in oh.....2 lines what I couldn't pull out of the financial aid office with a cattle prod and a cherry picker!

After 3 weeks I'm going to ...I'm going to....

I don't know what I will do but you better believe I'll do it with passion!

It's official I have my financial aid award. We have a winner. Now it's time to compile a budget to see how much money I will need. On another note, I will be moving in T-minus 14 days.

Cola

just out of curiosity, are FA awards pretty much the same for everyone?

It looks as if I will have to borrow an extra $9000 to make ends meet. That sucks.
