hey little of topic....but is it mandatory to have a laptop?

thanks see you all in the fall

I am pretty sure Dr. Whithead said on the listserve that is the NO computer requirement.

Of course I'll be the guy in the back of uber boring lectures watching my DVDs on mine. 🙂

Robz,
The max is 38,500 per year in stafford loans, 30,000 unsubsidized and 8,500 subsidized. My wife will be the only one working as a 6th grade teacher. Out of state tuition is 29,763. That leaves 8,737 left, which is 8,737/12 months=728.08 per month. My rent alone is 1,080, which is pretty high. The school cost of attendance for someone single is 50,874. They don't mention that their projected cost of attendance is not accurate for married people. I did a very thorough budget using excel and microsoft money. Hopefully it won't be as bad next year.

Oh man. That sucks. I bet they assume your wife makes a nice 30K+ a year in her teaching job too. You know what assuming does....

Thanks for the info, I appriciate it. I am in the midst of putting together a pretty through budget in excel myself. I am glad I am starting the budget process now rather than when the money comes in. I keep remembering things I NEED to have...and I'm like damn..I gotta pay for that too?

For those of you who are putting together budgets for next year, here is information on health insurance - I pulled it from the NSU dentistry thread, but it should apply for us too.

I'm flying down tonight to find someplace to live. I'm staying though Monday, so I plan on paying a visit to our financial aid friends just to say hi. 😉 I'll let you all know if I find out anything interesting!

Have a great weekend!

But they would allow you to take out private credit based loans if needed right????? Thats kinda scary. It makes getting married a bad thing! What is the estimated cost of attendance for a married person??? $38,500???

The Cost of attendance for 2004-2005 released from NSU breaksdown like this:
Books & Supplies=6,340
Misc.=1,800
Room and Board=10,431
Tuition and Fees=29,763
Transportation=2,540

This is for a Non-Resident, Off Campus Housing. This is what they suggest for the student alone and no one else. I have been using microsoft money for a few years now and it has enabled me to track every dollar and assign a category to the expense on income. When I analyzed my financial records I was able to get a more realistic budget, specific to what my family normally spends. As we all know the budget released by universities rarely is perfectly accurate for each person. I believe this is just an educated guess and they probably do not account for oiling your prosthetic leg and your drug and alcohol addictions. 🙂

When I went to NSUCOM (matriculated in 1999), the tuition for an out of stater was 22k I believe. I took out the 38.5k. I actually lived VERY well my first two years... I shared an apartment (Cedar Key) so my rent was $500 + maybe 100 in utilities. That really sucks that tuition has crept up so much, though, that really crimps that 38.5... and I couldn't imagine having to take out 50k a year to just LIVE. That would mean you'd be graduating with atleast 250k. (I graduated with 188k).

Q, DO

You know I have Microsoft money and have never used it!!!Thanks for the breakdown. Im a florida resident so hopefully it wont be too bad. but Im definetly going to check it out and make a budget of my own. Thanks again! 😀

Bumping this thread cause it does NOT belong on the second page yet.

Well, it seems like this and the listserve are fairly quite now a days.

Someone ....somewhere has to be doing something more exciting than me. (well, I did have beers with Cerbanator this week)

I'm stuck in this internship for another week....and my project is done so...I'm bored out of my skull right now. I think I am going to go home early. Oh I lead such a rough life. 😉

Hey Robz, Sorry the internship is so dreadful right now, you're almost done!! I have three and a half weeks left of work and I can't wait to be done here. Hang in there! 😉

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know which part of our budget is supposed to cover the insurance fees? Is it part of the $6000 for books and supplies? Or misc.? I guess it doesn't really matter, but a friend asked so I told her I would post the question.

still no news of FA... oh well, ill keep checking everyday.

me either.....but I am not going to be a torn untill like oh....the week I move down. So, I'll start to worry on the 5th.

To add some light regarding Financial Aid,

Just be patient. I didn't receive my award till middle of September and even that took some extra effort on my part. Make sure that your loans are disbursed through the lender you chose. Initially, my loans were not disbursed by my preferred lender and I had to redo a lot of stuff. Yet, the staff was very helpful in my ordeal and changes. Just be patient and it should arrive, as did for most, sometime around the first day of school.

Doogie

Bump it up.......haven't been here for a while. I'm moving down there in a week and a half so I am getting excited to chill on the beach....see ya guys.

Im a Miami native and can attest that all the beaches down here are amazing!! I also recomend heading out to Las Olas and Beachfront for some fun, theres lots of bars and clubs right oif the Ft. Lauderdale Beach. Im gonna live it up before August!!

I only got to spend a little time on los olas and it seemed kinda cool...pricy but cool. From what I noticed from down there is that there really isn't a whole lot of places to park for fairly cheap. I guess they get ya coming to play eh?

EH..who cares!..we're all medical students and we have an unlimited supply of cash to blow!!! WOO HOO!!!!!

(end sarcasm)

Hey everyone! I have a FA update: I got a billing invoice from NSU on Saturday that had information about federal loans but the amounts of the loans made no sense. So I called them this morning and apparently any loan amount on these billing statements is incorrect and is subject to change upon review by a loan counselor. I asked when I might hear about the actual amounts and she said anytime between now and six weeks from now. SIX WEEKS!! :scared: I pointed out that orientation starts in five weeks and she said "well, that's their time frame." She also said that I was put on the list for FA until June 13, even though I've had everything completed for months. Anyway, let's hope they can get through the list quickly!

This is what I wrote a bit ago.....

Robz said:
So, I being as cheery as possible asked when time frame would be...the response...well if you turned in your forms early it could take longer than the 4-6 weeks to get awarded. WTF????? I thought everyone was screaming to get your crap in ASAP....geesh. I know others have already been awarded too. Kinda irks me especially when I had to ask a second time for a time frame and she repeated the same answer....so I said..."I guess there is no time frame if I am understanding you correctly?" Response - "nut uh" (meaning no)

Which my phone call sounds a lot like yours.....

I got the same invoice and it was like the one I got a few weeks ago. Mine if you look at it closely you can see that it is only for one semester. Everything on that invoice was half of what I was suppose to get and suppose to pay for. I didn't even bother calling this time. I'm letting it go for a bit...

Yeah...I like how they have canned spiels to give out....again look at my quote form above. The girl seriously couldn't give me any other answer. It was like she was programmed by the borg and they are all part of a collective.

For me its even more fun cause not only am I just chilling out on awards...but I am chilling out on residency status too. Which is another thing that I'm sure I'll hear about the very last minute.

I dunno, it seems like this is our first experience with the red tape of NSUCOM 🙂 Its almost as fun as dealing with my undergraduate financial aid office....oh the joy of joys of that.

Man, at least I am getting on July 6th a $1000 bucks of summer student loan money cause I figured something like this would happen. Too bad I didn't take into account my uhaul costing like 600 bucks...(somehow I forgot about moving expenses). That leaves me 400 to be orientated on for the month of July and oh...until financial aid comes in. If its september like DoctorDoogie4 got theirs ....man, it's no books, no equipment, and ramen noodles for me!

Yeah, I remembered your conversation with them... I was just hoping that since I was talking to them almost two weeks after you called, the wait would be more like 2-4 weeks instead of six more weeks?!? Also, I realized that the loan amounts were for one semester and, as such, I thought they would reflect 1/2 of the federal loan totals - not so. Unless I'm magically getting $47,000 in federal loans - which would be awesome, but I doubt is accurate 🙄

Moving costs are also worrying me tremendously and I was just told that my car needs $375 of work. Fabulous!

Oh well, I can't wait to get down there and start school so we can quit worrying about all of this money stuff 😉

if that's a car repair shop response, they might be over charging u. things that i would make sure of is oil change, other types of fluid filled, air in tires, spark plugs if u want. those come off the top of my head. i dont think there's much else unless there's some sort of malfunction in your car.

Thanks!! It is preventive maintenance, nothing is really broken (the stupid Maintenance Req'd light is on, or I wouldn't have done anything). I emailed my parents about it and they seem to think I need it done (maybe that means they'll pay for it, too). I figure I'll try and get everything out of the way before school starts and car trouble will be even more of a hassle. In the two years I've had the car, I've never had work done on it, so maybe it's time.

Also, does anyone in the Davie area have Verizon cell phone service? If so, are you happy with it? I'm thinking of switching to them for the free in-network calls. Thanks!!!

I just received my call from Dr. Chaffin today offering me a seat. My problem is that I am trying to locate information about the aid that is offered from the Southern Educational Regional Board (SREB). I am sure some of you may have discussed this topic but I did a search that came back negative. I don't have much time to decide and there aid is crucial. I have recieved a scholarship from KCUMB that is hard to refuse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quick question...Where you on the "Alternate List", or the "High Ranking Alternate List"?

I think I was on the alternative list. Not too sure. Was told there was only a wait list.

Congratulations N.O. Shane on your accepatance. Did Dr. Chaffin impart any other information such as any more alternate list movement expected, number of alternates left, etc.? I'm waiting patiently for a seat but time is running extremely short. Again, congrats and I hope to see you there.

But he did not give me any info about movement. I might not accept the seat. I have an opportunity to receive a partial scholarship from KCUMB for next year. I would only pay 16K as opposed to 29K. Tough decision that I have to make by Friday. Any input from this forum? You will hear something TPBC. Good luck.

Hi Shane, I applied for the SREB Regional Contract Program which basically makes it so that you are paying in-state rather than out-of-state tuition if you live in one of the participating states (the difference is about $6000). I have not heard yet whether I will receive this aid. The application was minimal - I just had to get a Superior Court judge to sign a form saying that I am a resident of Georgia. You can find information at http://www.sreb.org/programs/acm/rcp/aboutrcp.asp. Contact the person listed for your state and they will help you out. Good luck!!

I got my Financial Aid award this morning!! It's the standard federal aid award, but there is also Federal Work Study on there. Can anyone tell me what Work Study entails and if this is something I want to do? It's worth $4000, but I definitely want to investigate more before I commit myself to anything.

First off congrats, Thats an awfully hard choice you have to make. I do think it would be a little easier for me knowing that its 16K versus 28K. Thats a lot of money and really for me makes it an easy choice. I loved that I picked NSUCOM and I know I'll be happy there but saving a minimal of 45K over 4 years is a HUGE thing! Its like getting paid over a years resident salary plus you don't have to pay interest on it.

Ultimatly you have to choose where you WANT to go. For me, I liked KCUMB (UHS) and they have some super friendly people there. KC was a neat town and you better like BBQ. 😀 I was admitted there but declined to go cause it just wasn't for me but for 16K I would have really really considered it. (can you tell I didn't get scholarship there 🙂 ) Other things is the weather and location were things I didn't feel comfortable with.

You can always do what I did....write it all down on paper with weighted factors and then see how it comes out but I am betting money talks....it did to me.

The only states for NSUCOM are GA, AL, and MS. They kinda skip LA.

WOO HOO!

Work study is suppose to be a job that you work at so you can "earn" that 4000. I was told at a few interviews like KCUMB and CCOM that when I applied for my FASFA that I was suppose to decline work study. I did my FASFA in Janunary and I am pretty sure I declined it on there but now...well dang I can't remember crap anymore. I just want to get my award 🙁

LA is one of the states, I don't know why it was skipped on the info section. I just got the application this morning. Thanks for the info Kristabel and Robz. Decisions, Decisions.

Robz said:

I'm thinking I probably will decline the work study, I'm just wondering what work study jobs are available. I know at CCOM the tour guide mentioned that one work study position was hanging out at a desk by the anatomy lab and signing people in and out - so you basically got paid to study. I could handle that, I guess. However, I know that there are plenty of work study jobs that I would rather not have...

Hang in there Robz, your FA award will come soon!! I feel kinda bad that I got mine before you, because I know you filled out everything before I did. 😳 Maybe it's alphabetical?!?

Yeah....Z is such a great letter to start with when this happens....so fair.

Then again...life is fair isn't it? 🙄

I always liked it when the kidergarden teacher did things in "opposite" alphabetical order....then the tables were turned!

so if it goes by alphabetical order...

yay, im above robz. im "v"

guess ill just have to camp out somewhere then.

Ok, I got my FA today.

I figure I should decline work-study, right? Who's gonna have the time/desire or consistent enough schedule to work, even if you're barely paying attention? If I'm wrong, please give me better feedback y'all.

Who did everyone get private loans from? Yes, I should already have this taken care of, but I don't  .

Anyhoo, I'll be in South Fl as of this weekend. Goodbye Ohio! Looking forward to meeting all you guys and gals!

p.s. I'm about to change my signature...my Cedar Key plans fell through. I'm looking for another place to live. pm or email me! (preferably walking distance to NSU HPD)

MUHAHAHAHA. I had to sneak fireworks for my apartment mates in Orlando sometimes. Then I felt really bad and stopped doing it when there was that super outbreak of fires in Orlando I want to say in 2000 or 2001. (no I didn't have fireworks then)

Roman candles are wicked cool though!

what about them m80's... i remember going to indian reservations in seattle to buy those. they'd ask if you were associated with the police and if you said no, they'd sell them to you.. wonder what happens if i'd say i was 😕

Down here we get excited about bottle rockets

I just wanted to let you know I turned down the seat. Hopefully you will get a call after the fourth. My deal at KCUMB was too good to pass. Good luck to whomever receives the call from Dr. Chaffin. It was a hard decision but you have to do what you have to do.

Thanks for the info N.O. Shane. I'll keep my fingers crossed and maybe Dr. Chaffin will give me a call. Best of luck at KCUMB.
