NSU-COM Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey rack..what did they tell you about webstar...? did they give you like login info or something? i also mailed in my deposit yesterday..when should i be hearing back from them? thx again

Im not too sure if you apply for the program, i think you declare it before school starts..and it is just a couple of nites a week..i could be wrong though, you should email Delia about it

There will be a meeting on the MPH thing about 3/4 of the way through the 1st semester. They won't let everyone do it. You have to be doing reasonably well in your classes. Therefore they wait till after midterm.

oh i received a mail notice giving my PIN to webstar... doesnt give me much else.. i perused it and it has somewhat limited use as of now.

So is there nothing we need to inform the adoffice of for wanting to do the dual MPH program? I guess that makes sense what theyre doing.

Hey guys:

when does the school semester start? thanks 🙂

First week of august = orientation (sunday = white coat ceremony)..then school starts the following week

Btw.wen are you guys going to head down to look for a place to live?? im thinkin of going 2nd week of march...look at condos with mom and gf...anyone else?

Hey...I'm headin to Miami in January to run a marathon, so I might check out some apartments then. Does orientation start July 31 and the white coat ceremony is Sun, Aug 5? Hope ya'll did well or are doing well on your finals if you're still in college! Have a nice holiday!

Wow - you're running a marathon! Good luck with that! It's cooled down a here a little bit so hopefully it won't be too hot when you run it. I ran one last year - the Disney marathon, but it was about 80 degrees during it which sucked. Go to this website to get info on orientation, etc... http://medicine.nova.edu/comorientation/index.html

Thanks tara! I signed up for the email account..let us know when you guys get an email from the school ...thx alot..

everyone have a nice xmas break..happy holidays

You guy's looking for apartments...Stay South of 595 if possiple and east of school as well. There will be some that argue about that, but that will give you the least amount of traffic.

thanks alot doc2b..that info is crucial...any place you know of that has a good 1 bedroom/studio that wont break the bank?

Happy holidays..to all of my future classmates 🙂

merry christmas to all.

on a SIDE note, anyone know what the policy on hepatitis B immunizations is? do we HAVE to get a complete series before school starts to be set or is getting vaccinated at the start of school acceptable also? what other healthrelated things do we need? this sucks because im in my year off and havent any health insurance =(

My name is Yakov and I have been recently accepted to Nova, my deposit is in, but i'm not 100% committed yet.. Chances are I will be at Nova next yeasr, but I cant say for certain...figured it would be great to converse with some of you, though. Anybody from the Northeast (I'm from Albany-area, NY) trying to figure out how this housing business will be timed...once I'm sure I will be attending I will plan to fly down...which is real time consuming, ive read some of the past posts on housing advice, and couldn't write it down fast enough.well, enjoy your holidays and I look forward to interacting with my (hopefully) future classmates. Happy holidays.

-cheers

Welcome Yakov..let us know when you are 100% nova bound..Im from TX...so no luck there...as for housing..i plan to go down to the FLL area during my spring break to vacation as well as look at housing..which is around 2nd week of march.. I will let you all know the exact dates when my plans finalize..If you have a facebook..scroll up and add all your future classmates to your friends list 🙂

BTW...what nationality are you...yakov is an interesting name..

once again..welcome..and i hope you decide on attending nova..im betting it will be a great experience 🙂

Hey Yakov! How can we persuade you to join us next year? 😉

I'm from the Northeast...PA, but currently living in Baltimore. I'm going to head down to FL in January, so I can report back with some details on housing! I hope all is well for everyone...Happy Holidays!

They say that it is a requirement to have that stuff all done before you start school: A full titer showing you have immunity to HepB, Tetanus, MMR, etc. Plus a PPD. They also require a physical. Look around the area that you live: I found a titer from one of my previous employers and got the local health department to give me the immunizations for very low cost. The physical sheet is so scant, that if you have seen a regular PCP that the office will likely sign off on it without seeing you for a complete physical.

That being said: there were a few ppl who were yelled @ during orientation for not having their stuff completed who didn't really get in any trouble. I don't know, however, how early they were accepted. Good luck.

Since you have so much time: You really should set up a group for the class of 2010. Our group is called NSU COM-Class of 2009. We currently have 192/240 members of our class on there. Many people are still active in updating their photo albums and all that jazz (if you want to see your other nova counterparts/ask questions).

If you can deal with no dishwashwer, and no washer and dryer (I'm a snob, I can't deal with public laundry)...I would check out Cameron Cove. They are running probably around 900 a month--about the cheapest you are going to get if you want to stay south of 595.

The Laurels has some studios in the low 800s, but they are about a 10-15min drive WITHOUT traffic, and closer to 25 with traffic. (Note: last aug prices were at 780, I don't know what they really are now).

Also, sometimes you get what you pay for. If you find a one bedroom apartment that is below about 750--be wary. Check it out VERY carfully--it is likely a long drive and not in a really good neighborhood. A few of our classmates have run into this.

what exactly was the recent board pass rate for the COMLEX at Nova?

The dean does not release this information, even to current students that attend there..but it is known that it is about the national average..hovering close to 90% try searching the forums for this information..

And just to point out that the COMLEX is almost independent of the student taking of the exam insetad of the institution of higher education..But the good thing about nova is that they offer the kaplan course for the comlex..i plan to take both COMLEX and USMLE so your gonna have to know your stuff no matter what, and the results is entirely dependent on the test taker..the school only points you in the right direction..it is up to you to do the work

heres a question.. how do you find a titer?? i thought a titer was a test. and what kinda place constitutes a "local health department"? i was about 111% dependent on my old family physician, so i am pretty uninformed about these things. im just contemplating paying for all the titers/immunizations required. siigh!

A titer is a blood test. Most of the jobs I have taken in healthcare environments had blood titers included in the bloodwork. That was my suggestion: go to previous job physical locations to see if this was done on you.

I don't know about all states, but I know that many offer low cost immunizations. I would start with a phone book and see if you can find a county or state health department or a department of immunizations. Another choice would be to ask a physician or any free clinic if they know of anywhere to get discounted immunizations. There are usually resources out there, you just have to do a bit of searching.

DARNIT...the person in charge of handling the deposits is on vacation until january 3rd...which coincidentally is the deadline for me to turn in my deposit..!!! so there is no way to check if NSU has received my deposit/letter of intent...why oh whyyyy..

and according to the bank statement..the check has not been deposited.

don't worry mikey! When I turned in my deposit, they told me it would actually pass through quite a few hands before being "officially received." Plus, I'm pretty sure the deadline is POSTMARK DATE, not the date they open the envelope and deposit your check. I believe it's Linda Ferris who handles the deposits, but you can also speak to Gabe Lindo. He is really helpful! don't worry and happy new year!!

Hey, Mikey,
They cashed my check and received all my transcripts and letter of intent but have yet to put me in the system as accepted and I can not get a NSU e-mail account or on the listserv. I have a feeling that many things will be addressed in the next week after their holiday break. I e-mailed Linda Ferris but she is obviously not back yet.

Linda ferris is on vacation until Jan 3rd...i have an email account tho!! so maybe that is a good sign..my plans are to email mrs. ferris...And call her on Jan 3rd or 4th...im on vacation in california..and cant fully have a good time until they confirm they have my deposit!!!

for all you future NSU 2010ers...my email is [email protected]

I wouldn't worry too much, they go by whatever date you sent it, and I was told by Linda that the check might not be cashed for awhile anyways. also, look for a letter at some point telling you that the deposit has been received.

Hey all!

I was curious if NSU offers any type of mp3 recordings of lectures for us or if we just have to tape lectures if they want them.

Also when is the BIG deposit due? Sometime in March right?

Thanks,
Dannielle

Are you talking about Yahoo groups? Or is there a "groups" area on SDN? Let me know and I will start the NSU COM 2010 group 🙂

YAY..linda ferris got my deposit..*relief*

btw..I think kai is talking about the group on facebook, and the big deposit is due on march 15 i believe..oh and btw..try to fill out the fafsa sometime this month!! the earlier the better..good luck all

Hey guy's just thought I'd let you know some things that confused the hell out of me. If you haven't applied for Fin Aid before it's a new experience. First of all you have to decide which lender to use. The school will automatically assign you with Sallie Mae. If I were you all don't use them, use Access Group (accessgroup.com). Sallie Mae charges you ~1000 disbursement fee, access group does not. So.... here's what you do. They will send you forms to fill out. Somewhere on there it will say use alternate lender...pick access group. If I were you all I would get on there website and go ahead and apply for your private loans. The school will not walk you through any of this and our financial aid department is ran by a bunch of orangutans. You can get your stafford through access as well. This will all save you ~ 4000 by the end of your school. I noticed that you all have a facebook.com group set up, you all should post this up there so everyone can see it once school get's closer. 😉

If you decide to not go with Sallie Mae, just make sure you have everything lined up WELL in advance to school starting. Keep on top of the financial aid office and make sure everything is in order several times (it sucks, but best to cover your behind).

I think some people had some pretty major problems getting their money when they switched lenders--and were running into issues paying rent, etc. (Doc2B, do you remember for sure?)

i did some reading on accessgroup..all in all pretty good..but only 10 year repayment? or am i missing something..i also like their money saving payment incentives..

yeah i started a facebook nsucom 2010 group. search for trent wang of NOVA and youll see the group.

ive never taken out loans before. Will stafford loans (sub+unsub) be insufficient to cover all expenses incurred? If i claim independent and family (myself) contribution is like 20-30k a year (part time this year), they should give me a fair sum no? Basically I guess im just wondering how much money I need to get from a third party lender that wont be covered by Stafford.

Ive NEVER done a fafsa. im in for some headache aye!

KK I had very little problems switching lenders. It took a little longer but that was because I did it late. If you do it up front it shouldn't make a difference. People I know through Sallie Mae took forever as well so I don't think it makes that much difference, what does is making sure that Fin Aid does there damn job, they are pretty much just wasted paychecks so you have to stay on them. Once you get the system figured out it's no big deal.

As for how much to borrow. If I were you borrow the max! You can always give it back at the end of the semester. Stafford (unsub and sub) will cover your tuition that's about it. I borrowed the max had about 4k leftover last semester. I'll probably have about that after this one, I'm planning on using some of it for travel, summer living expences etc. Just borrow as much as you can upfront. It's better to do that than run out and have to wait for Fin Aid to authorize it.

To the guy who was talking aobut his EFC, I don't know if your actually talking about your family giving you 20-30 grand a year. If they are going to do this, you will not need to borrow anything on alternative loans.

whoaa.. im dumb dont even know what i wrote. what i meant was if i claim independent, can i put down zero for EFC? Im trying to do this whole medical school loan thing totally independently. Thanks again,

hey trent..yea..you can put efc as 0...im planning on doing the same thing..

what are you guys putting down as tax return info if you havent filed for 2005 yet? 2004 info? I worked a lot less this year than the past. Any of you guys planning on filing your 05 returns already?
