NSU-COM Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You have to put your 2005 info, unless you want to go to jail, not have your FAFSA procsessed, etc. Your employers by law have to have them to you prior to the 1st of Feb. Just fill your FAFSA out then. The important thing is not to have this done by next week so much as like May. People just wait to file until April 15th and then before you know it, it's may yada yada yada.....

i see. i thought ir ead somewhere that youre supposed to estimate and then revise when you get your 2005 returns but thanks for the info. does the time at which you file fafsa affect your loans? is there a possibility that there are less loans available later on or is there pretty much no cap to fafsa stafford loans? thanks again! i shouldve taken some business classes, or majored in business. stupid molecular bio/biochem. feel so useless when it comes to a lotta things haha.

You will have access to the same amount of loan money regardless of when you file your FASFA as long as you get it in on time. I don't think the government is going to run out of loan money.

aight haha. whew i guess i will go seek out a w2. being bored is really bad for me. makes me type a lot on things like this. sorry.

Someone PM'd me with a few questions so I thought I'd answer here for everyone's benefit. To change lenders, there is a form that Fin Aid will send you later on in the year. You will send this back to them with the lender you would like to handle you loans. I don't even think they have come up with a budget for next year yet, once they do that you'll know how much to request. Basically it goes like this (I don't know if all of these numbers are right they are only an example), if they say your tuition, living expenses, etc add up to 55,000. Your going to get 30,000 in Unsubsidized Loans and 8,500 in Subsidized. Subtract that amount from your budgeted amount = what you request for your private, whether it be Sallie May, Access etc. All of this will be in your packet. The biggest thing is just make sure you pick one lender for each, don't think you can just check all the boxes or none and they'll pick one for you, they won't. Pick a lender, put your application in through them, that's important because some people think you apply for pvt loans through fin aid. You first have to put your applicaiton through your lender, they send this to Fin aid, fin aid certifies it, you get your cash.

I'll post more as you guy's get more questions, I can't keep posting everyday, but keep posting them and KK or I will try and answer. Big thing right now, get your taxes done as soon as you can, and submit your FAFSA. You can even go ahead and do it and file a correction once your taxes are done. YOU DON'T NEED TO SUBMIT YOUR PARENTS INFO, AND DON'T APPLY FOR A WORK STUDY, IT'LL GET KICKED BACK TO YOU.

what happens if you get a private loan to settle the difference of 55k-38.5k. By private I mean, from a relative or the likes. Do I need to record this somewhere, or just keep the cash to myself and file only fafsa?

If i were you..i would hold out until you find out you are awarded for your fafsa request, the school will calculate it and will award you the max..I think this should pretty much cover everything. If you need more money then you can choose an alternate loaner. But you want to stay away from anything not federal because all of the private loan lenders have crazy interest rates. Just stick with the subsidized and unsubbed stafford federal loans....

First of all, mikey is wrong, what they give out for fafsa barely covers tuition, you figure tuition is 29,000 and the max that you can get from the feds is 35,000...you do the math. Apartments are going to run at least 1000/month for a two bedroom.

Rack if you have someone to pick up the rest, you are lucky, and you don't have to report it, or apply for anything other than FAFSA.

Please correct me if im wrong doc2b:

I was under the impression that their is a higher limit on unsubsidized federal stafford loan for certain health professions..

if you go to accessgroup.org and look up nova's school, and they say the annual max is 18,500 per academic year with up to $8,500 of this amount may be in subsidized Federal Stafford Loans and then 2 paragraphs down,

Please note: Higher limits on the unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan may apply to certain health profession students. Find out more.

when you click find out more: it says you get an extra 27,000 per 12 month academic year or an extra 20,000 for a 9 month academic year. if you are doctor of osteopathic medicine.

so 18,500 + 27,000 = 45500 ??? or is it a 9 month academic year? which would make it like 38500??

Thank you for helping us navigate this financial aid stuff.
You said all this information "will be in our packet", which packet were you referring to? Will Nova mail us packets of information covering this? Hopefully soon...

The max you can take out Subsidized is 8,500, and the max un subsidized is 30k. Our budget last year was for 56,611 (if you use access it will be 1155 cheaper because of them not having any fees). You have to make up the difference with private (alternative) loans, that can be from access, your bank, your parents etc. Tuition last year was 31,995, so you can see, that just taking out stafford loans with out having another source of income is impossible. I hope that clarifies it. You can find most all of this info on NSU-COM Current Students web page.

To the next poster, yes they will send you a Financial Aid packet, I believe this came seperately from your acceptance packet. You can always call the Fin Aid office, if you speak monkey, to find out.

thx doc2b that helps alot..but unfortunately i do not speak monkey...so its good to find someone that knows something about financial aid that also goes to NSUCOM..and speaks in a language i understand 🙂

Hey guys!

I will be joining you down there next fall! I live in Miami beach, FL. Are you guys planning a get together before school starts? god bless 🙂

🙂

ahh money. how i hate thee. btw i think i have the financial aid package... i believe it was given out during the interview sometime?

to lunalenna:...yea..we should plan a SDN get together before orientation..since school will get very hectic once orientation begins..and since we are gona be classmates you should sign up for facebook =) trent has already made a NSUCOM 2010 group on there...if you have an existing account you can always port your account to the nova school once you get an email..or if your like me..wait until you graduate to port your facebook acct.

to trent: i have that package too, but i think we get another package stating the budget for the 2006-2007 year..since it will be slightly different...plus the school has to notify you how much you are eligible for, etc... oh yea..could you invite me to that facebook group...i keep forgetting to ask you..thx 🙂

i can't find it in the facebook. i can only find groups and people from my school. how weird huh?

facebook wont allow you to search other schools...PM rack..he made the group..he can invite you

I am there.

i cant invite users from different schools. its inschool only! just wait til you transfer your account i guess? or make a new one solely for nsu as i have done.

oh..my bad..i guess i'll just wait.till spring breakish to port my account to nova's..btw..when do you plan to go over to FLL to look for housing? I plan to look 2nd week of march..but i'll be afraid that mite be too early..and nothing will be available then..since none of the other med students will be moving out until later im guessing may'ish i wonder if going during the 2nd week of march is really a good idea..

What you got in the interview was most probably just a copy of what our budget was for this year. You will be getting more in the future. I was told by a little birdie that there will be more money was requested for the cost of living for those people who are concerned about living off of what is available--which is probably good becuase most apts are about 100/month more expensive than they were in august bc of Ms. Wilma.

2nd week of March: you will not be able to find out for sure if there is going to be availability at any of the complexes until 60 days before the person moves out.

You can still come down, look at a bunch of places, find out where you want to live (first choice, second choice), get your name on the waiting list (this way you get first choice of apartments), and take care of everything else via mail and phone. This is what I did this year, and it worked out well. Also, I would suggest searching on rent.com and apartmentguide.com and getting an idea of what places you want to look at when you come down here--just "driving around" to find places likely would be very inefficient.

FYI to give you a guage of distance. From the Laurels @ Jacaranda, it takes about 25-30 minutes to get to school in the morning. From Plantation Colony Apartments, it is more in the 10-15 minute range (much of the traffic is getting parked here).

Happy Hunting!

I was planning on looking at apartments next month - I live in West Palm and my boyfriend and I were going to look around, fill out some applications and put our names on some lists. Just to get an overall feel of the area. BTW - do any of your current students know anything about Gardens at Nova? My SO and I were going to get a 2 bdrm apt and try to find someone to take the second bdrm so we can split the rent 3 ways (in case anyone on here is interested - PM me).
I think it would be a great idea to have a SDN get together before orientation

Hi,

Can anyone tell if nova is still interviewing or how full the class is? My application was complete on 12/15. Still waiting to here something. I have a couple acceptances, but nova would be top choice.

Thanks.

I am definately interested...rent split 3 ways is definately beneficial..because of the high cost of living in the near by area..I will most likely be in the FLL area in the 2nd week of march..i will be sure to visit the gardens of nova...and let you know if im still interested....I am an asian american..no pets..no smoke....any more info..you can PM me..i also have a SO..which may visit only on holidays ...

So I finished my FAFSA, filed my taxes and now I am wondering if I need to apply for a private loan or will NOVA automatically send my info to salliemae? Also I own a house and have a home equity loan of 20K out on the house to fix the roof, granted only 3K was actually used. Do you think this will look bad to the private lenders? Should I close out this equity loan, and pay the $500.00 early closure fee in order to get private lenders to accept me? Or would they just have me get a co-signer? I have great credit.

I'm moving towards downtown FLL if that gives you a hint, for you guys who are looking.

Nova is still interviewing, we had a group of suits come through yesterday.

No, they will not automatically apply for pvt loans for you. The HE loan may effect your interest rate, check with lender. Read above posts about Access Group instead of Sallie Mae.

Whats the commute like to and from nova from downtown FLL assume the traffic hours we will be using to travel to and from school

It's really not that bad, probably equal to what you will drive from say Plantation. The nice thing is that, what little time you have, isn't spent driving to do other things, because it is right there. I'm looking in Poinsetta Heights area, if any of you are here looking for housing, you can get a 2 br house in that are with a back yard/pool sometimes, for the same price you'll get near school. Plus your near all the cool places. From Plantation right now it takes me about 20-30 min in the morning for an 8 mile drive. From downtown in the morning to school it takes me 20-30 min for about a 10-12 mile drive. Afternoon is a little less.

If you aren't relatively close, say within 4-7 miles or so, you will probably use I-595 to get to Nova. 595 goes east and west. During morning rush hour traffic it is generally easier to head west on the interstate toward school than it is to go east. Actually it is usually a LOT easier. And in the evening the reverse is true.

Your free to record your own lectures.

Hey all!

I was curious if NSU offers any type of mp3 recordings of lectures for us or if we just have to tape lectures if they want them.

Also when is the BIG deposit due? Sometime in March right?

Thanks,
Dannielle

Hey guys...My name is Sneha and I will also be attending NOVA this fall! I'm from New Orleans, LA and a recent graduate of Louisiana State University. I thought it might be a good idea for me to try and get to know some of my future classmates. I'm going to be traveling around visiting some friends for the next month...however I plan to make a trip out to FL once I get back in March to look for places to live...etc. Luckily I have a friend who already lives there and we should be moving in together! I've been reading all of the previous posts and find them very informative...I'll definitely have questions of my own soon enough! I have also added some of you on facebook...feel free to add me if you want by looking for Sneha Patel under Louisiana State University!~NSU class of 2010!!

I think he/she was asking if the school offers this service to students themselves. I assumed not because of the lucture attendence policy, but wanted to make sure.

Looks like i may not head down to FLL during my spring break..and will instead be skiing..so let me know if yall find anything good when yall are condo/apt shopping!! thx guys...I'll prolly be heading down early may instead

The longer you wait the better the condo market may be...didn't you say at one time you were interested in buying? Many condos were bought as investments but the hurricane(s) are forcing many to rethink their strategy and dump their properties. You can go online and check out MLS of the area.

Yea..i was thinking of buying..but after telling my parents that condos were really expensive near the 200K range for a 2/2 they didnt think it was worth it..but if prices go down..we may reconsider...thx tho for the info

Some guys in my class record them and put them on our class website

www.nova.edu/nsucom2009

I don't know how many they have on there though. You're free to set that up within your class.

mike,

whered you get info about buying the condo? which area etc. i may still be interested in purchasing at this point.

hey trent,

this is from a MII Pegasus: regarding condos

The ones going condo this year are: Cedar Key (which used to be the most popular apartment complex for NSUCOM students...its literally across the street!), Davie Crossings, and The Gardens at Nova. You'll be able to purchase the condos directly from the complexes. There are several other condo complexes near campus which will certainly have some up for sale soon, but you would probably have to go through a realtor for those.

I personally live in an apartment at Palm Trace Landings, and highly recommend it to anyone. Its close to school (5 min. drive), has very nice amenities, and isn't as overpriced as some other places around here.

If you're moving to South Florida from the midwest like I did (or any smaller/rural community)....be prepared to spend a lot more $$$$$ on housing!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW..if you do decide to get a condo..and I dont.would you be interested in subleasing your other room to me? assuming you get a 2/2 or bigger ..im trying to keep all my options open..thx alot

So the Gardens at Nova are going condo? I love it when you go into a leasing office and they don't tell you that stuff. I have the same situation where I'm living in West Palm - my apt complex has gone condo and they are still moving people in - not telling them that it has gone condo. I guess it would be a good idea to straight out ask the leasing office when you're looking around whether or not they will or have become condo. I did go around the area a little bit last Friday and I saw some places saying that they are selling condo's in the mid 100's. Now I don't know if that it is true or if it is false advertising because I was pretty shocked to see a condo in south FL for that low of an amount. Actually what Doc2be said about downtown Ft.Lauderdale is true - it really isn't that far away from the school (though I don't know about traffic in the morning), but that may be worth looking into too.

First off, welcome Sneha! see you come fall! 🙂

Secondly, my mom is a realtor, and she mentioned to me that the market for buying houses right now is prime. For some reason, maybe due to the hurricane scare like one of the previous posters mentioned, many condos/houses are being sold in the area. It could be also that so many people are into the whole buying/selling for investment thing. Either way, this is making some prices fall. so don't give up complete hope to actually purchase. I'll try to dig up more info on location and price for those of you out of state or area.

About the traffic, your going in the opposit direction of rush hour so it isn't worse than anywhere else.

About the leasing offices, MAKE SURE you sign your lease prior to moving, they will not tell you if they're going condo until it's a done deal, b/c they don't won't to loose potential leasees. I moved down on a Wed in July, and the place I had put a deposit down at, went condo on tues. Guess what, I didn't have a place, and it is really hard trying to find a 2br that accepts dogs, in a day, so I got screwed. If you have a lease in place that can't do **** about it. And once the managment company changes hands, you can just about forget getting your deposit back. I had to go down and set in the leasing office and threaten them. Someone else in our class still hasn't gotten her money back, granted she is a little less aggressive than I am. Just be careful.

About the Palm Trace Apts. Several in our class live there and haven't had any problems, if you want to be near school, that is really your cheapest and best bet.

if i buy, of course id sublease another room haha. still gotta figure that stuff out. sigh! im prolly gonna go in april to look around. spend some time down there.

Just to let you guys know who are not down here yet. The 1/1 condos in cedar key (the ones directly across the street) are ~160K, and the 2/2 are going for well over 200K :scared: , but they are a stones throw from the school and you will have NO problems sub-letting 😎 . The other complexes are going for pretty much the same price. There are some other condos and townhouses nearby (within walking distance) they all basically start close to 200K or above for 2/2. Hope that helps a bit. Happy Hunting :luck:

Any of yall get an email from NSU? about missing financial aid document? They said they received my request for financial aid (prolly from FAFSA)..but im missing some documents..then they tell you to check it out on webstar...I checked it out..and im missing 2 things....1 is the NSU authorization form..(handed out during interview)..the other is an acceptance to a program!!! ...Why is it taking them so long for them to put me in the acceptance program!! i wonder who i should call to inquire about this issue...

I don't know how many they have on there though. You're free to set that up within your class.
Note: some professors WILL NOT allow their lectures to be recorded and posted. It is up to each individual professor/department to allow this. Individuals are always welcome to record their own lectures though (except I think for one MPH class).

I was accepted in December and have committed to going to NSU. I was just wondering does anyone know I can a nice cheap apt at in Ft. Lauderdale. I am willing to do the 30 min drive and all that is involved. Also Is any one interested in finding a room mate. I figure the only way to save a little money is to find a room mate. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma this past may. Any and all information would be appreciated.

congrats on getting in....Im from Utexas..so dono if we'd get along 😉 Anyways Im looking to live right near campus...but it seems its not very feasible to live by yourself with such high costs of living....let me know if you find anything good..thx..

Hey all:

I'm so confused. I sent in my deposit and all the $ today.
I still have to fill out the resident info papers and the FASFA online.
I have a question. I got married last week. But i filed my income tax from last year as my parents dependent. For fin aid, do i have to mention my husband's income or just my parents?

Also, can someone please add me to the facebook group? i can't find anyone outside of FIU, and i still don't have my NSU pin or email . Thanks 🙂

Hi Lunallena:

I would think that you would just use your parents income and not your husbands since you just got married last week. The FAFSA requires tax info from 2005 and since you weren't married in 2005 I wouldn't think that you would have to put your husbands information in there. Next year may be a different story though. But I could be very wrong but that's my assumption. The NSU financial aid office may be able to answer this question for you (I don't know personally how helpful or not they are).

Can't help you with the facebook group because I'm having trouble with it myself - sorry!
